Prizes in Non-acorn Attractions

New 21 Jul 2024 Asked by tameryourentertainer 4 Comments

I'm interested in why there is only one non-acorn attraction that you can claim a prize from. Was this unintentional or was there a reason?

The cards were designed a ways before the decision to make the ones that could be Eternal legal, Eternal legal, so we just converted what we could. The main criteria at determining Eternal legality was “can it work in the rules?”. The one wrinkle was the Teddy Bear token that was a prize for some Attractions was pink and the rules don’t handle pink as a color. We’d already made the token and were using Water Gun Balloon Game as a promo and it also used the same pink Teddy Bear token which kept us from changing its color.

Unique Buy-a-Box Promos Preference

New 10 Jul 2024 Asked by caseyuptobat 38 Comments

Regardless of individual power level of the cards involved, no card with a unique name and rules text should be considered part of a booster set unless it is actually available *inside* the booster. Please stop making buy-a-box promos that are otherwise unobtainable.

Market research shows the majority of players (that buy booster boxes) prefer the Buy-a-Box being unique.

Artist Card Assignment Process

Can an artist ask to do art for a specific card? (presumably a reprint or promo)

Artist are assigned cards. They don’t really have an opportunity to ask for a specific card.

Supreme Verdict Promo Reaction

New 07 Jun 2024 Asked by ricardolongo 151 Comments

Is there a place (or perhaps a survey) where I can express my insactisfaction with the announced Supreme Verdict promo for the next qualifier season? I'm sure there's a public for this sort of card treatment, but surely tournament players largely prefer promos that look more like traditional cards, no?

I think we’re trying different things to see what players enjoy most. How do the rest of you feel about the Supreme Verdict promo?

Retro Colored Artifacts Appearance

New 01 Jun 2024 Asked by annorax 39 Comments

+1 on the doing retro colored artifacts like the Bolas Citadel promo. Just... use the actual colored textboxes from the colored card frames on the artifact frame and it'll look great.

Do others agree?

Retro Frame Artifact Feedback

New 31 May 2024 Asked by mois113 22 Comments

Mark, reading the comments, 9 out of ten Question Marks prefer the way retro frame colored artifacts were done with the promo Bolas' Citadel. That also lines up with my impression talking about it with retro frame fans in person and on the internet. Could you please pass along the feedback that many retro frame fans would hugely prefer "artifact frame with colored text box" variant? Please?

I will pass the note along.

Retro Border Feedback

New 25 May 2024 Asked by pantswithoutlegholes 6 Comments

recently whenever colored artifacts are printed in the retro border, they use the old border associated with that color, and not the old artifact border with colored accents. i strongly dislike this from both an aesthetic and legibility standpoint. the cards don't look like artifacts. the promo retro bolas citadel used the artifact border with colored accents and it looks and reads much better. can you please tell whoever is in charge of this to reconsider? i see this complaint quite often.

There is a schism between “reinvent the past to mimic the present” and “use the tools of the past as they were used in the past” between retro frame fans. I think we’re trying sone of each to split the difference.

Request for Attractions

New 19 May 2024 Asked by tmdoublezero 21 Comments

If you ever make some more attractions in a promo set or something, can I request one or two that do something good on a 1? Knowing that no matter how many attractions I stack there is still a chance they do nothing is kinda off putting for making me want to play with them

The always miss on a 1 and always hit on a 6 was built into Attractions to guarantee that good and bad rolls can happen, and also to simplify figuring out what’s going on.

Colored Artifacts with Retro Frames

New 01 May 2024 Asked by saltfreevalk 39 Comments

Is there a reason that colored artifacts that are given retro frame treatments use the color frames rather than the artifact frame? The original colored artifact with retro frame was the Bolas’s Citadel promo and I think that was perfection, using the colored frames makes it hard to know they are artifacts at a glance.

Putting them in a colorless artifact frame makes it hard to know it’s colored. It’s a no-win choice.

Issue with Reprinting Oko

New 22 Apr 2024 Asked by honor-basquiat 61 Comments

I don't like the argument that because original Oko is at a higher rarity on a bonus sheet, it's impact in Limited is minimal so it's fine.

Not everyone plays on Magic Arena and does Limited events dozens of times. Some people only play Limited in paper a couple times or at a pre-release and it's extremely discouraging when the one or two times you play limited, you get bodied by a notoriously OP card that isn't even a mechanically new card.

Magic makes numerous different products, various products where they can reprint cards that aren't also used for Limited (i.e. collector boosters, FNM promos, Secret Lair, pre-constructed Commander decks) or even high powered reprint Masters sets that can be drafted.

I don't see why Oko needed to be in the Play Boosters and I thought the same about Ragavan in March of the Machine. If it's thematically important to release the reprint associated with the set, then why not just do it in collector boosters?

One thing I don't like about all of these bonus sheets is it means in nearly every limited environment with them, the best and most powerful cards are oftentimes old cards that I'd played with or against rather than the new cards I want to be excited for.

Let’s see what the Question Mark’s think about this specific topic.

Nalathni Dragon Rarity

New 17 Apr 2024 Asked by like-winter-we-are-cruel 39 Comments

Weird question. I've been collecting the card "Nalathni Dragon" for years now, and I've got several hundred of them. My friend jokingly said I must have a majority by now, and that made me wonder, how many Nalathni Dragons _are_ there? They were meant as a con promo, so presumably they were a fairly limited print. Is that information you have access to and could share, even vaguely?

Remember that there was so much backlash to it being solely a convention promo and it got put into a copy of The Duelist.I have no idea of the print numbers, but The Duelist inclusion raised it a bit.

Cutting Out Negativity

New 28 Mar 2024 Asked by kidcincinnati 91 Comments

Hey Mark! Somewhat of a silly question. I really enjoy Magic’s current direction, and I feel like so many of the online (vocal) communities around it are determined to be in a swirl of negativity that just doesn’t bring me joy. I have an awesome LGS and a great community there, but I do rely on Magic Twitter to keep up with upcoming releases, promos, etc. If I was looking to try to cut some of these negative communities out but wanted to keep up to date, what would you recommend to keep up?

You can look at the cards on Reddit and not read the comments. : )

Promo Card Distribution

New 03 Feb 2024 Asked by tre3qwerty 52 Comments

Hey Maro, played the pre release yesterday evening and it was really fun! The only awkward thing was the extra, limited-illegal promo card: most people didn't read the piece of paper included in the box, and some even missed the LGS owner announcing it out loud. I think the card should've been distributed separately to avoid the confusion.

A lot of players attend prereleases in venues that we can’t independently get them cards. And even in venues that we can, if the cards are separate, there is no guarantee that the entrants in the prerelease will get them. The only way to ensure that the people playing in the prerelease get the promos is having them in the prerelease boxes.

Prerelease Promo Logic

New 03 Feb 2024 Asked by blaze-1013 60 Comments

I think I've given this message before, but labeling the promo that you can't play in the prerelease with the word "prerelease" seems counterintuitive.

Here’s the challenge. We want you all to have the promos because it encourages you to come to the prerelease. If we let you play with the promos, it warps the prerelease, making it less fun. A lot of prereleases aren’t held through a place where we can deliver the cards in a way that guarantees the players get them if we don’t put them in the prerelease boxes. So what are are options? We can not have the promos, but then you all don’t get them. We can make the promos playable in the prerelease, but that dictates the kind of promos we can do, or forces us to do something a lot more random (a stamped card from the set, for example). That means you might not get promos that excite you as much.We can try giving the promos through other means, but then a large chunk of players don’t get them. I know it’s easy to just say “why does Wizards keep doing this obviously dumb thing?”, but the reality is it’s not as simple a problem to solve as you might think. That doesn’t mean there isn’t a solution, but it’s not an obvious one.

Survey Option Feedback

New 18 Jan 2024 Asked by foxenquestion 15 Comments

Hi Mark, your surveys like "How do you feel about getting promo cards(...)" are very often 2 choice only. You do not leave option like "i do not mind". With this your response rate for the survey is limited, because % of people that do not care i also an important information. Just a thought... Either way - thanks for your dedication to the game!

I’ll add an “I don’t care” option next time.

Pre-release Promo Opinions

I just want to voice that I really enjoyed the 3 pre release exclusive mythics and I am excited to see which one I'll open. I don't mind they not being playable on pre release, as long as it's communicated clearly.

Ixalan Pre-release Promo Query

New 03 Dec 2023 Asked by pravinoz 26 Comments

I like to collect pre-release promos. I also like double-faced cards. Was there any particular reason Lost Caverns of Ixalan did not have pre-release promos of the rare and mythic double-faced cards?

Double-faced cards have to be printed on a different sheet than single-faced cards.

Gleemox Printing Challenges

New 27 Nov 2023 Asked by jetz72 27 Comments

Could Gleemox ever see print as a physical card? I don't imagine a card that's banned by its own rules text could fit in a pack, but as a promo or bonus or something?

The rules don’t stop its printing as much as having a 1,000,000 mana cost causes play design issues.

Pre-release Promo Stamp

New 09 Nov 2023 Asked by thisisanuncreativeusername 26 Comments

Hi Mark, is there any chance of the old pre-release promo stamp (with the full date) coming back or are they just unviable for modern sets/production?

We use them globally and in some markets they can be adjusted slightly, so that’s why we’ve moved away from exact dates.

Pyroblast Promo Concern

New 20 Aug 2023 Asked by bloodyqueerfrenchman 39 Comments

With Pyroblast being a Promo at Local Game Stores with the release of Wilds of Eldraine can we expect the card to be in the set? I am asking this because it is a colour pie break, isn't it?

It is a color pie break. Our rule is we don’t introduce color pie breaks, through reprints, to formats that don’t have the card.
