Prizes in Non-acorn Attractions

New 21 Jul 2024 Asked by tameryourentertainer 4 Comments

I'm interested in why there is only one non-acorn attraction that you can claim a prize from. Was this unintentional or was there a reason?

The cards were designed a ways before the decision to make the ones that could be Eternal legal, Eternal legal, so we just converted what we could. The main criteria at determining Eternal legality was “can it work in the rules?”. The one wrinkle was the Teddy Bear token that was a prize for some Attractions was pink and the rules don’t handle pink as a color. We’d already made the token and were using Water Gun Balloon Game as a promo and it also used the same pink Teddy Bear token which kept us from changing its color.

Goreclaw Backstory Reveal

Hiya Mark! Today is my birthday, and I would like to invoke birthday trivia please if that is okay! Is there anything you can share about my favorite woman in all of magic, Goreclaw?

Ethan Fleischer, winner of the second Great Designer Search, has a Commander deck based around Bears. I believe he made Goreclaw for that deck. Happy Birthday!

Hexproof and Un-Games

New 13 Jun 2024 Asked by culation 4 Comments

CR 702.1c states that "the same is true for" effects apply to each of a keyword's variants separately. 702.11g states that "hexproof from each " is shorthand for one variant of hexproof per possible quality of that characteristic. This means in non-Un games, discarding Breaker of Creation (which has hexproof from each color) to Indominus Rex, Alpha gives five counters and thus draws five cards. How many cards do you draw in an Un game? (In particular, does every eye color count?)

In Un-games, when counting colors, you count the five normal colors plus any color of permanents you have. You have the gold Dragon token from Sword of Dungeons & Dragons, you’re now at six. You also have a brown Avatar of Me, you’re now at seven. You have a pink Teddy bear counter from Gift Shop, you’re now at eight.

Flagbearer Effects

New 27 May 2024 Asked by zombsidian 2 Comments

If/When more Flagbearers or Flagbearer effects? They've been seeing some use in Pauper for their ability to pull potentially game winning kill spells away from their original target.

If. They caused a lot of confusion when they originally appeared.

Tokens vs Cards

New 20 May 2024 Asked by banksyguythrowingthings 18 Comments

I'd question the "no flavor difference btwn tokens and cards". To me, most tokens feel like extras in a movie. Some citizens, some goblins, some zombies, even a sea monster. There are exceptions like legendary/named tokens of course (often sidekicks), but in general tokens feel a bit more "generic" than cards. P.s.: I love tokens, this is not an attack on them - just vibes.

I’ve had this conversation with the creative team many times. If a Bear and a token Bear are both in front of you, there’s no way to tell them apart with the naked eye. It’s just two Bears.

Vorthos and Casting Cost

New 15 May 2024 Asked by yeen-zone 3 Comments

Un-rules question:If I have a Vorthos, Steward of Myth naming Storm Crow (bear with me here), and a Fist of Suns on the battlefield, can I then cast Mindstorm Crown for 0 mana under the interpretation that it “contains the chosen character in its name”?

A noble attempt, but no. : )Vorthos actually cares it’s referencing the character.

"Kudo is not actually a king. It’s a metaphor." That seems kind of mean. Does Kudo know?

Yes, but he’s a bear about it. : )

Justice for Grizzly Bears

New 05 Apr 2024 Asked by timothymcmaster-blog 54 Comments

why are mice, squirrels and rats regularly able to kill grizzly bears in one on one combat? I demand justice for apex predators please confirm that you will see to it that future Bears have a size appropriate for their place in the food chain.

Blame the fate of Bears on Alpha and inertia. Grizzly Bears (plural) was a 2/2 originally, and became the core nickname for 2/2’s. A Bear should probably be a base 4/4, but inertia is a powerful force.

Next Confectionary Creature

Congratulations Mark on finally getting Donutperson as a creature type in OTJ. What confectionary creature is next on your list to add to Magic?

It’s part of our bigger “desserts matter theme”. I’m trying to get a Bear Claw that’s a Bear Dessert.

Requests for Blue Bears

New 30 Mar 2024 Asked by stormtide-leviathan 28 Comments

If blue is getting bears now, can I request that room for a vanilla one is found somewhere? I know we don't get a lot of vanillas these days, but it would still be nice

Blue getting a 1U 2/2 rare with upside doesn’t mean it gets a vanilla 1U 2/2 at common.

Request for Card

Please make a three-mana Ambush Viper with no additional upsides. I need it for a cube; Ambush Viper is too good because it outshines Ashcoat Bear, but at three mana it would be about right.

A very narrow ask. : )

Legendary Bear Trivia

People are always asking you for trivia, so I thought I’d give you some instead in case you didn’t know about it. We got a new legendary bear in the Karlov Manor Commander product, which ties into the main set’s theme of detectives because a group of bears is sometimes called a sleuth!

Common Mechanics Terminology

New 26 Dec 2023 Asked by j-waffles 38 Comments

Is there a term R&D uses to describe cards like “bear with sets mechanic” or “mind rot with sets mechanic” or “cancel with sets mechanic” or the myriad of other examples of (blank) with sets mechanic? I’ve started keeping a list of cards that get the “with sets mechanic” treatment, and I’m curious if there’s a term for all the “root” cards.

“With set mechanic” is basically what we say.
