Token Diversity Limits

New 05 May 2024 Asked by selein 23 Comments

I had a great time drafting OTJ last night! I noticed, after opening an entire box, there are a LOT of different tokens. My first thought was how they do an excellent job of increasing design space and contribute to overall worldbuilding. Unfortunately we didn't open any Mercenary tokens and only 1 treasure – the two most needed tokens in the set. Comparatively, we got 3 sheep, angels, gnomes, 5 food, & 4 Elk among others. I point this out because I think token diversity is a budget to consider.

It is. We do have set limits.

Armadillos and Folklore

New 11 Apr 2024 Asked by submergedforgottencladogram 41 Comments

Mark, I love OTJ, and how it uses the fauna, flora and folklore of North America to feel 'western'. Armadillos, Mountain Bighorn Sheep, Prairie Dogs, Buzzards, Coyotes, Roadrunners, Gila Monsters, Wolverines, Porcupines, Tumbleweeds (nevermind the Tumblewaggs), Beavers, Possums, Badgers, a knight riding a Moose, a battalion of various Cactus-folk and a Magic version of Paul Bunyan and his Blue Ox. Its like a roadtrip from my childhood through Wyoming, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico and western Texas was condensed into a set, even the panning for gold at a tourist trap! All I'm left wondering is when can we return so we can get a card inspired by John Henry, the steel-driving man, and maybe an ornery bison or two.

Please dole out copious high fives to those who had the idea that this set needs a bunch of critters from the southwest and the Rocky Mountains to feel like a western setting.

High fives shall be applied.

Ovinomancer Origins

New 17 Dec 2022 Asked by billymackcollector 50 Comments

I don't think there's ever been a magic related thing so specifically marketed to me as the old border printing of Ovenize in Dominaria Remastered. I'd love to know how that came to be. Ovinomancer is my favorite card ever. My actual question: can you please give super high fives to everyone involved in making this happen?

Sure. A little Ovinomancer trivia. The card was inspired by many of R&D playing Warcraft 2 on the LAN at Wizards. Warcraft 2 specifically has a creature that turns other creatures into sheep. Bill (Rose) loved doing that so he made a card that did it.

Sheep Cloning Possibility

Do you ever think Sheep Cloning from Unglued 2, could be brought back in a different un-set?

It’s possible. It’s pretty high variance is the biggest obstacle.

Opinion on Green Coin Flipping

New 17 May 2022 Asked by derplingvonderp 33 Comments

Re: coin flipping in Green. Sounds a lot like random mutations, evolutionarily speaking.

Green has no flavor issues with coin flipping. In fact, Unglued 2 had one that made Sheep tokens.

Ovinomancer Origins

Today is my birthday! I'd love to know if you have any trivia about my favorite forgotten creature, ovinomancer. I loved ovinize and makes me think there might be some more to know!!!

Back in the day, a lot of Magic R&D played Warcraft. We had a LAN at work, and it was a popular late night activity. One of the spells in Warcraft let you turn creatures into sheep, and Bill Rose loved using the spell. So much so, that he made a Magic card that turned creatures into sheep. I was not interested in playing Warcraft, so instead, I used my time talking to the receptionist who sat by the LAN. (We were testing the waters of opening game stores and we had one at work to test it and that’s where the LAN was.) Her name was Lora. This year we celebrate our 23rd anniversary. : )

Hi Mark, now that we’re getting squirrels again, what are the odds of new cards that make sheep tokens?

I could see Sheep returning. Couldn’t ewe? Sheep puns, really? - 🐑

Creature Color Logic

New 27 Apr 2018 Asked by kmalsom 59 Comments

Why are sea creatures limited to blue? What philosophy do fish or Kracken have that is blue. It feels like because the symbol for blue is water and fish live in water is a very poor excuse for limiting them. By that argument animals like long horn sheep should only be in Red since they live in mountains.

Not ever creature in a color lives by the philosophy of the color. There are many aspects to to a color other than it’s philosophy such as blue’s elemental connection to air and water.

Amonkhet Minotaurs Design

New 21 May 2017 Asked by thebluemechanic 45 Comments

I really like the design of the minotaurs on Amhonket. Who's idea was it for them to be sheep-like rather than cows?

I believe that was done during the initial world building.

Sheep Trivia Birthday Wish

New 14 Oct 2015 Asked by wenzel-dashington 119 Comments

Howdy Mark! It's finally my birthday! May I please have some trivia on my favorite Sheep, Nyx Fleece Ram? Or on the sheep creature type in general. Thanks for answering so many questions!

The card Ovinomancer was inspired by late night video game playing that most of R&D used to do in a tournament center we had in the offices. I wasn’t interested in playing, so I used to hang out and talk to the receptionist. This last weekend, we just celebrated our 17th wedding anniversary. Happy Birthday!

Sheep in JOU Cards

Sheep vs Goats

New 15 Apr 2014 Asked by planeswalker-umbral 27 Comments

How come Sheep and Goats remain two different creature types? They are close enough where I think that sheep could be changed to goats without an issue. I mean Alligator and Crocodile got combined.

I think people think of sheep and goats more separate than they think of alligators and crocodiles. If I show a picture of a sheep or a goat to people, they aren’t going to mix them up.

Sheep and Squirrels

Story Behind Humility

New 21 Jun 2012 Asked by the0uroboros-blog-blog 1 Comments

Is there a story behind the card Humility? Also, will we ever see such a crazy effect again?

I liked the idea of a card that turned everything into something harmless (I think I was thinking sheep at the time). Little did I know the rules nightmares I was unleashing.
