Mouse

Exclusive Mechanics Question

New 10 Jul 2024 Asked by su92 27 Comments

We've seen very few cards as of yet, but are the following mechanics exclusive to their faction: Valiant (Mice), Thresold (Rats), Expend (Racoons), Forage (Squirrels)? Or can we expect to see at least a little of (some of) them in more colors?

Those four mechanics are unique to one animal archetype.

Didn’t quite fit the biome or size range. Why not, ponies are small, or little if you will.

Not when your base is a mouse.

Choosing Mouse and Rat Tribes

New 03 Jul 2024 Asked by jjustin1379 165 Comments

Why did you choose both mouse and rat to support as a major tribe in bloomburrow? I do not know the difference between mice and rats but colloquially people typically use the words interchangeably.or sometimes people say rats are big and mice are smaller. Or that rat is just a derogatory term for mouse. Couldn't you pick one or the other and then have a few of the other appear sparingly in the set? There are so many animals you could have done it feels like a waste to choose two almost identical animals. Also you mentioned that you did not rat and mouse to share a color. Is this because it would be difficult to tell the difference between a mouse or rat from just art? Different colors means you can say it's a mouse because it's white. Why both mouse and rat as major tribes?

Because they are the two most commonly used animals in the anthropomorphic animal genre.

Potential for 'Rodent' Category

Any chance of a “rodent” batch for Rats, Mice and Squirrels? Feels weird to have a type for each of them when all Birds get one.

There’s a chance.

Rats in Bloomburrow: Design Choices

New 01 Jul 2024 Asked by jericuboritox 2 Comments

Hey Mark! I'm one of the people really looking forward to learning more about Bloomburrow. I noticed that Rats are the Blue/Black archetype in Bloomburrow, even though I associate them a bit more with Black/Red, especially after Wilds of Eldraine last fall. Was making Rats be in Rakdos like they were in Eldraine ever considered? Or were they planned to be the Dimir archetype from the jump?

We talked about it, but liked them in blue/black better. We preferred not having Mouse (which was red/white) and Rat overlap in a color.

Request For Pets Batch

Since people are requesting batches…I’d like to request PETS: dogs, cats…maybe mice, ferrets? I am sure it would be poplular.

Maybe one day.

Future for Creature Groupings

New 12 Jun 2024 Asked by polarisfluff 15 Comments

Are we going to see more mechanics for groupings of creature types like outlaws in the future? Like maybe fighters (Knights, soldiers, warriors, archers) or critters (rabbits, squirrels, rats, mice, etc) or undead (zombies skeletons vampires spirits)? Where does it sit on the storm scale?

There will be more batching. We do want to be careful how often and how intuitive the groupings are.

Winota's Design Choice

New 23 May 2024 Asked by zombsidian 3 Comments

So I know Winota is designed to show off the bond between Ikorian Monsters and their Human Partners, but why does it trigger off the same non-Human as many times as possible? Shouldn't the effect only happen once per non-Human to show the bond off? Seems silly that my mouse can have 10 bonded human

When gameplay and flavor get into competition, we favor gameplay.

Seeding Theme Insights

New 20 May 2024 Asked by jirachibi2550 14 Comments

When you're seeding, do you know what the theme will do? For example, red and white mice were released in Wilds of Eldraine, did you know when you guys put them in what the r/w mice theme in Bloomburrow would do/be focused on outside of the type?

The closer we get, the more we know.

Yes.

Justice for Grizzly Bears

New 05 Apr 2024 Asked by timothymcmaster-blog 54 Comments

why are mice, squirrels and rats regularly able to kill grizzly bears in one on one combat? I demand justice for apex predators please confirm that you will see to it that future Bears have a size appropriate for their place in the food chain.

Blame the fate of Bears on Alpha and inertia. Grizzly Bears (plural) was a 2/2 originally, and became the core nickname for 2/2’s. A Bear should probably be a base 4/4, but inertia is a powerful force.

Mice in Bloomburrow

New 08 Mar 2024 Asked by strixheaven 37 Comments

Hi Mark! What was the reasoning behind putting Mice as Boros in Bloomburrow (and can you give the reasoning for the other typals when the time comes)?

Nice are often the protagonist in the genre, and red/white has the right feel.

Squirrels in Bloomburrow

New 07 Mar 2024 Asked by pikachugirltits 45 Comments

I was taking a hiatus from Tumblr over my birthday, but do you think I could get some belated birthday trivia on Mice or Squirrels in Magic? Bloomburrow is my most anticipated set of this year!

For many years, Squirrels were kept from the main sets by the brand team. I was allowed only to use them in the Un-sets. Luckily, R&D has come around on Squirrels, and they are even going to play a role in Bloomburrow. Happy Birthday!

Bloomburrow Influences

New 02 Mar 2024 Asked by crabarbeque 52 Comments

Redwall is surely not the only influence on Bloomburrow - but it has to be a huge one, up there with Watership Down. Both of these properties use charming anthropomorphic animals to tell what are extremely dark and heavy stories.Having [1] a human 'main' character in Ral and [2] communicating that Grist does not belong somewhat undermines a possibility I truly was hoping for.Traditionally 'dark' releases like Innistrad and Phyrexia have felt rather jolly in tone/outcomes, respectively... is there ANYTHING dark about Bloomburrow you can share right now?

I can’t get into the story yet, but I can correct an assumption you have. Ral is not the main character. Mabel, the mouse we previewed at MagicCon Chicago is the main character.

Bloomburrow Animals

New 29 Feb 2024 Asked by tevans-living-life 34 Comments

Were the animal denizens of Bloomburrow chosen or designed to parallel different fantasy races? Such as squirrels being dark elves, or mice being humans?

Each animal plays a role in the world of Bloomburrow, and yes, there is a strong fantasy feel to the world, which required us filling in certain roles.

Bloomburrow Animal Guessing

New 24 Feb 2024 Asked by blaze-1013 89 Comments

Can I guess the animals for each color in Bloomburrow? WU: Birds, UB: Bats, BR: Lizards, RG: Raccoons, GW: Rabbits, WB: Badgers, UR: Otters, BG: Squirrels, RW: Mice, and GU: Frogs

Everyone is free to guess. Here’s what I said in today’s panel. 1) There are ten two-color pairs.2) Every one is a different animal. 3) Red/white is Mice.4) We’ve seeded some cards in previous sets.5) I said that Rabbits and Frogs were two of the animals.I won’t tell you if you’re correct, but I enjoy seeing guesses.

Rat Representation

New 27 Jan 2024 Asked by hodorkotb 92 Comments

"Because Rats are pretty black."Mark this is propagating anti-Rat tropes depicting these good bois as disease-ridden pests and I beg you to reconsider this hateful rhetoric.Rats are just chonky mice.

I keep saying the Rat PR guys are horrible. They should hire the guys that represent Squirrels.

Cultural Interpretations

New 23 Jan 2024 Asked by edvaldofelixleal 31 Comments

Hi Mark! I saw that many didn't understand my post in relation to mermaids, mainly. But here in Brazil, a mermaid is one thing and a merman woman is another. We don't consider that Kiora is a mermaid, just as Ariel is not a merman. It would be like confusing mice with rats... In our mythology, we have Iaras, who are mermaids of rivers and lakes. It would be sacrilegious to say that she is a merfolk and not a mermaid...

Help educate me. We have numerous female merfolk with fish tails. How is that not a “mermaid” by your definition?

Design Parallelism

New 23 Dec 2023 Asked by tybonel13 23 Comments

Was City of Death's design impacted at all by Three Blind Mice's? It feels like the gap between them is too small for the problems with Mice to require changes to City, but if they were both designed pre-problems, why isn't City's II-VI ability the same as Mice's II-III ability?

Each product was designed by a different team in parallel. I assume Doctor Who has some interaction they were conscious of that made them use the more protective template.
