Request for Card Trivia

New 18 Jun 2024 Asked by owenkirby 1 Comments

Hi Mark, while it's still my birthday I would like to kindly ask for some trivia on Morkrut Necropod or Blitz Leech.Thank you!

Blitz Leech was designed for Ikoria that made use of keyword counters. That’s where the counter rider comes from. Happy Birthday!

Haste in Standard

New 13 Apr 2024 Asked by radjanspiritmonger 27 Comments

Hi mark,I understand that aggro has its place in making sure games aren’t durdly but there’s just so much haste in standard that it feels like you can just throw them all in a deck and win. It’s especially prevalent in arena where you can blitz through games in minutes, and I just never feel like I see many other archetypes there these days. I know this is my anecdotal experience and I know that there are other decks out there. It just feels like mono red is making the environment unfun.
Thanks for listening.

Thanks for sharing. I do know there have been discussions lately about game speed.

Extending Set Mechanics

New 31 Mar 2024 Asked by rawfishfan420 45 Comments

Hey Mark, as a newer player (Started in New Capenna), and I wanted to express that I don't mind leaving between each set, but what I really crave is the set mechanics lasting longer than one set. Prototype, Unearth, Blitz, Backup, and now seemingly Spree and Crime cards are all mechanics that I crave more of and feel both that I will have to wait years to see them again. What are the chances that we will see mechanics across consecutive standard set releases?

It’s not off the table.

Updating Game Mechanics

New 12 Mar 2024 Asked by thenuclearotaku 28 Comments

Follow up to my recent question about upgrading mechanics: like I said, it's become more of a recent trend to either introduce new mechanics as upgrades of older ones (Disguise, Cascade, Blitz) or even just tweaking old mechanics to make them a bit more intuitive to use (Hideaway, Amass, Phasing). Is this a conscious and active effort on R&D's part? Or is it more a product of the game's long lifespan? I.e. you can only create so many new mechanics before you have to start reinventing the wheel, so to speak.

Design technology keeps improving and the game keeps adapting. Good mechanics can fall out of favor due to changes, so updating them is just good design practice.

Linear vs Parasitic

New 06 Mar 2024 Asked by jjustin1379 29 Comments

Sometimes a mechanic is for more than limited play. Energy was a whole mechanic that seemed highly pushed for competitive tournament play so much so that several of the strongest energy cards were banned and energy was still a decent choice in standard. I think the more parasitic a set mechanic is the more it is for constructed. Infect was like this too. Mechanics like blitz do not care how many you play in a deck. You do not get rewards for playing only blitz cards in your deck.

The word you mean is “linear” not “parasitic”. Parasitic only plays with cards from the set it is in. Linear means the cards pushes you play cards of a similar theme/mechanic. Linear cards more push you towards play mechanic themes in constructed. “Modular” cards, the opposite of linear, allow you to play them easier as one-ofs.

Prospects for Blitz

New 26 Feb 2024 Asked by thejaminone 31 Comments

Hi Mark, It's me, the guy who asks about blitz! If there's three things I love it's hitting people, dying and drawing a card. So where is blitz on the storm scale? Can I expect more in modern horizons 3? Also please hifive each and every person sneaking more energy cards into the game :)

I’d call blitz a 5. My guess is we’ll do it again one day. I share your love of energy and high fives shall be applied.

Was Blitz inspired by the Bad Action Dynamite keyword from Duel Masters?

Not directly.

Mechanics Granting Haste

New 13 Jun 2023 Asked by submergedforgottencladogram 45 Comments

In terms of mechanics that involve granting haste (with possible trade-offs), how does R&D see Blitz compared to Dash and Riot? Is one more likely to return than another?

Each has its own strengths and weaknesses. Blitz is the most complicated. Riot has the tightest viable design space. Dash has the most structural requirements (meaning it wants certain types of things to also be in the set). I think any of them could return, but Dash seems the most likely.

Complexity in Gameplay

New 29 Jan 2023 Asked by one979 44 Comments

Regarding complexity and mental load:One of my friends in our playgroup has given nearly identical feedback about complexity and power creep, and a handful of content creators / doomsayers have echoed those same notions.I am the opposite. I love new mechanics. New Capenna was a fever dream of connive (which is a 5 star ability), blitz, casualty and what have you. These terms were overwhelming for the first ten minutes of our first precon matchup, but then we talked them through at the table and everyone got it.Sefris / dungeons is my favorite commander deck, so much so that I’m looking to build an initiative/monarch deck with Vela the Night Clad at the helm. And I’ve been enthusiastically been trying to make my Myra commander deck work too. Again, I explain in clear terms to my spell table group how attractions work, and everyone gets it within a turn or two, and good times are had.I hear the complexity feedback, but also I always wonder what the alternative is. Simple vigilance and haste and reach keyworded creatures every few months from here to eternity?

The nature of a trading card game is we have to keep exploring and trying new things. If complexity is an issue, there are a lot of formats that can cut it down for you. Ones that use (almost) all the cards are just going to continue to rise in complexity.

Returning Dash Mechanic

New 06 May 2022 Asked by sigmasonicx 48 Comments

Does blitz mean dash is retired, or could you see dash being favored over blitz in a new Standard set?

No, blitz is a variant. Dash could return.

Evolution of Blitz Mechanic

New 08 Apr 2022 Asked by djelibaebi-deactivated20240223 54 Comments

i love how blitz fixes the repetition of dash, was it dash at any point during design or did it just develop into its own dash 2.0

We originally thought of dash, but tweaked it to bash (the design name for blitz).

No, it was blitz.

Jace Reprint Chance

New 15 May 2013 Asked by mbertiaux 12 Comments

What are the chances Jace, The Mind Sculptor gets reprinted in M14 or any future set for that matter? Do you consider him too good even in an environment where Aggro (Naya Blitz) keeps winning major tournaments in Standard?

I highly doubt Jace the Mind Sculptor is visiting Standard any time soon. Even I, a non-developer, know he’s over the line.

Set Structure for Newcomers

New 27 Mar 2013 Asked by ghostdaddotcx 18 Comments

I'm starting to wonder if a lot of the structure added to sets does more harm than good for new players trying to figure out how Magic works. You have no idea how many people I've run into who are trying to bring something competitive to FNM who don't get why their all-Evolve deck or Angel deck or All-The-Izzet-Cards deck flops. Is there something to this, or is it necessary to see one's BR Vampires deck get crushed by Naya Blitz to learn why these strategies are bad?

Just because the linear strategies aren’t top tournament decks doesn’t mean they don’t do a whole lot of good. Remember that tournament players are the minority.

Future of Hellions

New 04 Feb 2013 Asked by falterfire 6 Comments

Storm scale on more of the best Magic creature type: Hellions? Specifically, more rare Hellions like Blitz Hellion or Crater Hellion.

I doubt we’ve seen the last of hellions.
