Urban Fantasy Setting Concern

New 01 Jul 2024 Asked by elderaktis 9 Comments

Hi, Mark. Not sure if I can quite explain this, but I'll try.Straight urban fantasy isn't terribly interesting to me, at least as a magic setting, especially if we're distinguishing it from "masquerade" as the other asker put it (i.e., magic's existence is a secret). I think that's because urban fantasy describes a setting that's exactly like the real, modern world, and the only difference is that there's magic. In other words, "magic and magic users exist" is the whole hook, what the burden of appealing to the consumer of that media falls onto. But, like . . . "magic and magic users exist" is the ENTIRE game! It doesn't feel like it does enough to differentiate itself from the rest of the multiverse. So, I think an urban fantasy setting needs to do one of three things: have a strong, unique hook beyond just "it's a modern world with magic"; be more focused, like how Duskmourn isn't just "80s fantasy" but "80s horror film"; or be combined with another concept, like how Ixalan is both "pirate world" AND "Mesoamerican world".Sorry if I rambled a bit there, but tldr: I for one would need a more detailed pitch than just "It's the urban fantasy plane/set!" to be remotely interested in it.

As with any world, there would be more details woven into it. I was just asking people’s thoughts on urban fantasy as a larger category.

Concerns about Commander and Freerunning

New 21 Jun 2024 Asked by tybonel13 2 Comments

As someone who primarily plays commander I really dislike how it's been stapled on to Freerunning. Cards don't need to work in every deck. In fact, it feels much more rewarding when you stumble across cards that only work in the deck you're trying to build. Freerunning as an assassin's only thing would've been great. Cool mechanic, cool flavor, fits the IP. Including commander makes it feel forced and too direct. I get commander is the most popular format and you want to cater to it, but this is the absolute worst way to do that in my opinion. Just make cool cards with niche abilities and have them be legendary from time to time.

Assassin typal is pretty narrow. Note how Outlaws of Thunder Junction had to also attach Rogue and Mercenary and Pirates and Warlock to make it mechanically relevant. (There were only 87 Assassins in the game - not counting Changelings - before Assassin’s Creed released.)It just isn’t good game design to make a mechanic (the only new one, no less) one that can only be played in under .1% of decks. But it’s Assassin’s Creed, Assassin’s in the title. It’s the core role of the game. So Corey (the lead design of the set) decided to find additional mechanical space to broaden it. Commander traditionally has trouble with aggression (aka not a lot of Commanders attack regularly) so Corey found a way to make the mechanic relevant in Commander.Even though every Commander deck has a Commander, free running doesn’t push in a way that makes every deck want or need it. I hear the message that some people don’t want us to design cards for Commander, but it’s a 800-pound gorilla that dominates tabletop play. If you go to many game stores, it’s the only pick-up game you can find. So to make our new mechanic (again, the only new mechanic in the whole set) something unplayable in our most popular format isn’t very viable. There is a truism in game design. “You design for the game being played.” You have to understand how your cards will be used by the players and lean into it. There are so many formats you can play that we (mostly) don’t design for, if that’s important to you. Magic is great in that you the player have so much agency in how you play. But we’re going to design for the format that dominates tabletop play.

Creature Types Draft Theme

New 01 Jun 2024 Asked by hanavesinauttija 27 Comments

If/when maximizing the number of creature types on a creature as a draft theme. Perhaps with cards like Captain's Hook (makes a creature a Pirate) or Angelic Destiny (makes a creature an Angel).

If. It’s hard to do for limited and changelings make it too easy for constructed.

Innistrad Missing Creature Type

New 28 May 2024 Asked by 3-slugcat-pilots-7-ornithopters 42 Comments

Hey MaRo! I recently watched a really interesting video about Innistrad recently. The thesis is that there is a subtle “missing” creature type of UG wizards that were cut for some reason, probably for thematic reasons within Innistrad.I was wondering if you could give any insight if that was the case? Here’s the video, it’s 13 minutes long but it’s very solid and it convinced me soundly as a viewer.https://youtu.be/12X5wgYikqk?si=WW2i_Hr4cZrDHZ_SI also love the idea that the wizards were explorer/pirate wizards in the Hinterland harbor a lot

I haven’t watched the video, but as the guy who led the design, I know that the only five creature types we cared about were the four monster creature types (Spirits, Vampires, Werewolves, and Zombies) and Humans. No other typal themes were ever part of the design.

List Style Nuance

New 21 May 2024 Asked by delicateturtleangel 9 Comments

Hi Mark!I noticed that when listing things in your podcast, you often put "and" in between each item of the list, instead of just between the last two. For instance you'll say outlaws are "Assassins AND rogues AND pirates AND warlocks AND mercenaries".Is that a regionalism, or a MaRo special thing?

No, idea. Probably me being dramatic. : )

Outlaws Mechanic Trivia

New 17 May 2024 Asked by zendikon-sage 63 Comments

Hi Mark,It’s my birthday and me and my friends are going to play some OTJ sealed today. In honor of this, can I get some trivia on Outlaws, my favorite mechanic to come out of the set?

We made a list for Outlaw of any creature type that might make sense:
  • Assassin
  • Barbarian
  • Berserker
  • Minion
  • Mercenary
  • Ninja
  • Pirate
  • Rebel
  • Rogue
  • Warlock
Assassin and Rogue felt like automatic includes. We added Mercenary because we wanted the “henchperson” token to be a Mercenary. The creative team asked us to add Warlock because we needed to have an outlaw spellcaster to hit all the card concepts. That’s what we handed over to set design. When making a batch, we do between two and five, with three being optimal. Four seemed in a good spot and allowed set design to add something if they had to. They added Pirate because of all the Pirate cards in The Lost Caverns of Ixalan. We did talk through many of the others. We considered bringing Minion back instead of doing Mercenary (we stopped doing it a while ago). We talked a lot about Ninja. In the end though, we felt this collection best served the mechanic.Happy Birthday!

Pirate Partner Concept

New 07 May 2024 Asked by mrpopogod 50 Comments

Clearly for the "Partner with Pirate", you need to dip back into history and make it "Partner with Other Pirate", where it can only partner with other cards with "Partner with Other Pirate". And then errata Shelkin Brownie to also remove "Partner with Other".

: ) Hats off to everyone who gets the reference.

Partner Mechanic Explained

New 07 May 2024 Asked by miztickow 29 Comments

Wouldn't "Partner with Pirate" only be able to partner with Legendary Pirates that have a form of Partner that applies to the first creature? I don't think it could partner with a pirate without partner.

It’s not defined yet as to what exactly it means as we haven’t done it. The question asking about it implied that it partnered with any legendary Pirate.

Partner With Mechanic

New 06 May 2024 Asked by clown-estrogen 32 Comments

Has there ever been talk to have say, "Partner with [type]" like "Partner with pirate" or something? Or generally, any "Partner with...: not followed by the name of a particular creature?

Partner with an open-ended prompt just causes us problems down the road when making the open-ended prompt. For example, if the partner with Pirate card ends up too strong, we now we have to nerf every Legendary Pirate. It’s just too big a risk. Partner with named card is something we know the ramifications of when we design it.

Combinatorics in Partner Mechanic

New 04 May 2024 Asked by guardgomabroa 50 Comments

Preface to say I don't know how combinatorics work, but can you explain why they impact partner-commander power level? The most recent partner commander, Francisco, is a mono-black pirate typal card, and I don't understand how his mere existence could affect the power of a deck that has, as a random example, Yoshimaru and Slurrk as its commanders.

Let me explain. Combinatorics is the math of how things combine. Let’s say I have two cards with partner. There’s only one combination: 1+2. Now imagine I have three cards with partner. Now there are three combinations: 1+2, 1+3, & 2+3. Let’s keep going.Four cards: six combinations Five cards: ten combinations Six cards: fifteen combinations Seven cards: twenty-one combinationsEight cards: twenty-eight combinationsNine cards: thirty-six combinationsTen cards: forty-five combinations Each time you add another card it adds whatever that number card is (call it N) by N-1. What this means is the numbers get larger and larger with each new card you add. The third card added just two new combinations, but the fiftieth adds forty-nine more. Power level follows this progression. To make the math simple, let’s say 10% of the combinations are strong enough to be competitive. As you get more and more cards, the number of competitive card combinations goes up faster. That’s was the crux of my point. The more partner cards we make, the more combinations increase and the greater likelihood of things breaking. And it gets worse the more cards you have. We don’t look at it as any one card in a vacuum. We examine the mathematical probability of problem combinations getting created.

Pirates and Assassins Inclusion

New 25 Apr 2024 Asked by unknownwarrior33 49 Comments

I just wanted to say that I see what you did there by including both Pirates and Assassins in the Outlaw batch, and I appreciate it. When my play group switched to Commander, I found it hard to use all the cards I wanted to (because of the build requirements, as well as us playing longer and thus fewer games). So things like this, that let me put a bunch of cool stuff from multiple sets into a cohesive commander deck, are really nice.

Backwards compatibility on new mechanical themes is something we’re thinking more about.

Mercenary Type Timing

New 17 Apr 2024 Asked by pontemosca 23 Comments

Hi Mark, once you decide to use Mercenary in creature cards in OTJ, was it too late to add some Mercenaries to other sets in standard?

There were enough Rogues, Warlocks, Assassins, and Pirates that it wasn’t an issue. Future sets can make use of the Mercenary creature type.

Bar Assembly Reason

Having a secret batch meeting. Zendikar has similar party parties.
