Reflecting on Design Methods

New 15 Jul 2024 Asked by krinstranger 8 Comments

Long long ago I read an interview with a Magic designer, I think in the Duelist, and they said they designed while playing, and gave the example of "I'd be winning this game if I just had a 3/1 with Protection from Green." Twenty-some years later and I'm still waiting for it...

Some designer? : )

Keyword Nuance Explanation

New 11 Jul 2024 Asked by hi-viz-wizard 2 Comments

Question in regards to your comments on gift a tapped fish; why not stop the keyword at gift, to offer further versatility if you wanted to reuse the mechanic?

Much like protection has a general meaning and a specific meaning when attached to other words, so too does gift.

Mechanics of Gifting Explained

New 11 Jul 2024 Asked by tiwaztyrsfist 4 Comments

With regards to "Gift a tapped fish" being a single 'keyword', are the rules being written in such a way that Gifting in general can be referred to by other cards?

I.e. Something like "If a player gives another player a gift [do this thing]."Or will they have to refer to SPECIFIC gifting effects?Like, will "Gift a tapped fish" "Gift a Card" "Gift a Food" all technically be a different as First Strike, Trample, and Flying from a rules point of view?

They’re connected like protection connects protection from red and protection from instants.

Trinket Text Example

New 22 Jun 2024 Asked by tropicalscream 2 Comments

what would be an example of trinket text?is the Shoot the Sheriff one?

No, that text matters a lot in limited. Baneslayer Angel’s protection from demon and dragons is an example.

Adjusting Protection Mechanic

New 15 Jun 2024 Asked by j-waffles 1 Comments

Has it ever been considered to add being destroyed to the list of things protection prevents? I know it changes what the mechanic does, but it is WILDLY UNINTUITIVE that something like “protection from white” doesn’t protect a creature from something like wrath of god

Most destruction is targeted, so it matches intuition. The problem with untargeted effects is there isn’t a clean way for the rules to reference them. Trust me, we’ve tried.

Protection and Augment Interaction

New 06 Jun 2024 Asked by su92 26 Comments

If a creature has protection from a color, does its Augment of that color fall off?

No. It would prevent it from being targeted in the first place, but won’t knock it off.

Ward vs Protection

New 13 May 2024 Asked by dwarf-scum 5 Comments

How is a colored or hybrid ward cost all that different from “protection from [color]” or “hexproof from [color]”? I would argue it’s even a better design space, since other colors can still interact if they have something uncounterable.

Protection from [color} is only unanswerable from a monocolor deck, and even then it could have colorless artifacts that might have answers. Ward: [color cost] is unanswerable to every deck not playing that color.

Creature Name Change

Witness Protection also changes a creature's name

The rules can give a card a new name.

Protection Storm Scale

New 09 Apr 2024 Asked by exalted-boda 24 Comments

Where is protection from everything on the storm scale?

It’s not something we want to do very often, but it’s not off limits.

Protection from Creatures

New 09 Apr 2024 Asked by zorroaburrito 31 Comments

Is "protection from creatures" still in-pie for white?

It’s not something we want to do much in any color.

Roadrunner Protection Logic

New 28 Mar 2024 Asked by kallixti 148 Comments

Why does Resilient Roadrunner get protection from Coyotes? Protection entirely eliminates the need to run from them.

The Roadrunner runs because it enjoys running, not because it’s trying to get away from the Coyote. I don’t think it considers the Coyote a threat. : )

Blue Removal Evolution

New 05 Mar 2024 Asked by sarroth 43 Comments

Reading yesterday’s design skeleton article: I’m intrigued about the change from ’lockdown’ removal in blue (usually flavored as sleep/freezing) to the Witness Protection style removal (usually flavored as transformation) - Could you explain the reason for that switch?

To better answer bombs in rare and mythic rare.

White's Targeting Options

New 26 Feb 2024 Asked by choco-taco-lover-blog 16 Comments

Could white get "Choose new targets for target spell or ability that targets a creature you control"? Bend or break?

I don’t think white gets that. It can grant a creature it controls protection to save it.

Protection Keywords Podcast

New 22 Feb 2024 Asked by kidcincinnati 38 Comments

It might be too early, but would you consider doing a podcast on protection/shroud/hexproof/ward as a bundle to talk about R&D’s evolving uses of “you can’t target this” mechanics and what you feel like you’ve learned from them?

I can add it to the list.

Color Names in Cards

New 10 Feb 2024 Asked by irlnautica 64 Comments

On the subject of Black Lotus: last night I decided to count up how many cards had the name of a colour in their name without being either that colour or colourless. White has 9, Blue has 4, Black has 7 (not counting cards with "blacksmith" in the name), Red has 10, and Green has 4. The only ones for Blue and Green are part of White protection cycles (the Scarabs, the Wards, the Circles of Protection, and the Runes of Protection). What I'm asking is when can we expect to see more cards with "Blue" and "Green" in the name that aren't those colours?

That’s not something we’re trying to do. Thanks for doing the research.

Design Protection Reasoning

New 24 Jan 2024 Asked by slapcastermage 25 Comments

I heard on the podcast you aren't allowed to look at cards designed outside wizards. What is the reason for this?

To lessen the chance of improper things happening.

Bounce Protection

New 17 Jan 2024 Asked by fusetech 26 Comments

Hi Mark! Hope you’re well. How likely is it to eventually see cards that can’t be returned to the hand from the battlefield; like bounce protection?

We have hexproof, and to a lesser extent ward, to prevent pinpoint bouncing. Untargeted bouncing doesn’t happen a lot.

Flicker vs Phasing

New 11 Jan 2024 Asked by blaze-1013 25 Comments

A brief run down of the differences between flicker and phasing. Flicker protects against all targeted removal and delayed flicker from all removal. It nombos with Voltron strategies and tokens but has bonus synergy with leave/ETB triggers plus resets cards (say an undying creature). Phasing meanwhile offers no synergies positive or negative but AFAIK all phasing is long term so will protect against anything. When coupled with hexproof and Indes I enjoy the range of protection options we have.

Each has its positives and negatives, and we want access to both.

Potential Colorless Protection

New 03 Jan 2024 Asked by edvaldofelixleal 36 Comments

Hi Mark! One thing I really need to know: If/when (A Rune of Protection for Colorless so I can defend myself against Eldrazis and complete my collection 😀)

If on more Runes.

Keyword for Deathtouch Protection

New 21 Dec 2023 Asked by aalgot 39 Comments

If/when a keyword that protects from deathtouch but not other sources of destruction

If. That’s too narrow to be worth a keyword.
