If. We’ve made auras that change based on who controls the creature.

Clarifying Modifier Rules

New 16 Jul 2024 Asked by nootnooter34 7 Comments

Hello Mr Rosewater,
Un-rules question for you:Modular Monstrosity has the ability, "Whenever an opponent casts a spell, you have five seconds to choose a keyword you haven't chosen for a card named Modular Monstrosity today that's been printed on a creature card."There is also a ruling that reads, "If the keyword has a modifier, such as a mana cost or a number, you must choose a modifier that’s been printed."
My question is, can you choose a keyword that has been printed on a creature with a modifier that's only been printed on a noncreature card. Cumulative Upkeep has appeared on many creatures so is a valid keyword. Can I name "Cumulative Upkeep-Add {R}" which has only been seen on the noncreature Braids of Fire?
Thank you in advance

You have to choose a mechanic and a modifier that’s appeared on a creature.

Noncreature Subtype Return

New 11 Jul 2024 Asked by bartholious 7 Comments

Was the "A noncreature subtype makes its first return" referring to the class cards? If so did you forget Baldur's Gate printed a new class?

I meant class. I did forget about the one Baldur’s Gate card.

Classes Subtype Return

New 09 Jul 2024 Asked by haru-n-harkel 29 Comments

Mark, is the returning noncreature subtype Classes? Because if so, they *did* technically return once, we got Artificer Class in Baldur's Gate as a one-off.

It was. I forgot that one card.

Hyphenation in Card Text

New 08 Jul 2024 Asked by sarahwithanr 8 Comments

Regarding style and formatting: I've noticed that some game elements are excluded by card text that uses phrases like "nonland", "noncreature", "nonartifact", etc., while others are hyphenated, e.g. "non-Saga", "non-Aura", "non-Wall", etc. Is there a design philosophy behind this choice?

I believe non<card type> is non-hyphenated, while non<card subtype> is hyphenated.

Non-Creature Artifacts as Commanders

New 08 Jul 2024 Asked by hobblinharry-blog 7 Comments

Regarding non-creature artifacts being a commander: this also even exists in not-silver border/acorn. Shorikai, Genesis Engine from Neon Dynasty is a non-creature artifact (its a vehicle so it can become a creature but its default state is not creature)

FYI

Noncreature Artifacts as Commanders

New 08 Jul 2024 Asked by jirachibi2550 52 Comments

If/When: A noncreature artifact that can be your commander and If/When: A battle that can be your commander? If i remember correctly, those are the ONLY permanent types that do not have a non creature that can be your commander.

The first has been done. The card has errata allowing it to be your commander.
The second is an if.

Green's Land Destruction Potentials

New 07 Jul 2024 Asked by zopandrel 23 Comments

Are land still something green Can destroy, and will the color get some of those effects in the future ?

Green is technically allowed to destroy land, but mostly it happens as part of a larger effect, like “destroy target noncreature permanent”.

Future Use of Kindred Type

New 06 Jul 2024 Asked by jdrawer01 3 Comments

Hey, Mark! I know there's been a lot of talk recently regarding use of the Kindred type. As a longtime fan of the type, I'd like to raise a fan perspective you probably haven't heard: I would be more than happy if the only time we saw the type in the future was in the case of noncreature permanents that become animated, if ever at all.

We are planning to be pretty miserly with kindred.

Prowl Mechanic Discussion

New 20 Jun 2024 Asked by sjk9000 25 Comments

Did you guys use Freerunning instead of Prowl because you could put it on noncreature, non-Kindred cards? Would you consider it a "fixed" Prowl?Personally I like the open-endedness of Prowl. I feel like Freerunning forces you to rename the mechanic every time you want to use it with a different creature type, which could get pretty silly pretty quickly. I don't want to live in the future where we have several nigh-identical mechanics that do basically the same thing but all have different names. But I do understand why you guys want to avoid using Kindred. This is a tangent, but let me ask: Why was Prowl's first outing mostly only put on Rogue cards, when it was worded to work with any variety of creature types?

Because it was designed as a Rogue mechanic in Morningtide that had a class typal theme.

Enchantment Creature Border Use

New 08 Jun 2024 Asked by attracte 18 Comments

Hey Mark, any thoughts on non-creature enchantments also using the enchantment creature border? Or is there too much inertia there with the standard border?

The inconsistency with how we’ve done it could cause confusion.

Slickshot Show-Off's Abilities

New 07 Jun 2024 Asked by prosperity-post 36 Comments

Slickshot Show-Off really didn't need +2/+0 for every noncreature spell for being a cheap creature with flying and haste. And what happened to abilities triggering only once each turn? This is ridiculous. Just give cheap creatures prowess and give something like this to more costlier creatures. We're past the Phyrexian arc, can we get back to a level of normalcy please?

It’s a rare costed for constructed formats. It gets to be very good in limited.

Prowess Ability Word Suggestion

New 01 Jun 2024 Asked by jimharbor 35 Comments

Was there ever thought of a tweak to Prowess as an ability word "Whenever you cast a noncreature spell... Blank" I feel that has a bit broader design space than the hard keyword

We can still write those words. I’m not sure we do it enough to change the prowess mechanic into an ability word.

Eldrazi Devoid and Kindred Lines

New 29 May 2024 Asked by myheartgoesoontz 35 Comments

Re: Kindred vs not in MH3, looking at all of the Eldrazi-related non-creatures, the ones with Devoid aren't Kindred and the ones with Kindred are "naturally" colorless and lack Devoid. So that appears to be the dividing line - Devoid cards aren't also Kindred Eldrazi because Devoid itself is associated with the Eldrazi, while non-Devoid colorless cards related to Eldrazi are so it's explicit.

Yes, it appears the non-creature, non-Devoid colorless cards that are Eldrazi theme are Kindred _______ - Eldrazi.

Prototype Mechanic Limits

New 23 May 2024 Asked by thunderweb 5 Comments

It looks like every card with Prototype is an Artifact Creature. Can there be nonartifact and/or noncreature cards with Prototype?

I think prototype can only be on creatures. I’m not sure if it has to be an artifact. My gut is no.

Typal Definition

New 22 May 2024 Asked by kallixti 2 Comments

When you say typal means "related to a type" does this only include creature types? Or would themes related to a supertype, card type, or non-creature subtype count as typal as well? (The confusion comes from the word "type", like the old "tribal", having multiple meanings in Magic.)

Technically, a card mechanically caring about any card type, supertype, or subtype can be referred to as typal.

White's Prowess Trait

If or when: White getting more prowess (or caring about noncreature spells) outside of Tarkir?

Probably when. Prowess is deciduous and tertiary in white.

Prowess Mechanic Revision?

New 11 May 2024 Asked by macrochelys 20 Comments

Would something that was restricted to "you cast a noncreature permanent spell" be closer to a 'fixed' prowess?

I’m not sure there’s a reason to fix prowess.

Black's Interaction with Prowess

New 02 May 2024 Asked by visioncrown 24 Comments

could black get prowess? it's the color that cares the most about noncreature spells after red and blue, correct?

No. Black, green, and white all can care about noncreature spells in different ways. Blue is primary in prowess, red secondary, and white tertiary.

Evergreen Keyword in Red and Blue

New 22 Apr 2024 Asked by shahrathestoryteller 21 Comments

Hi Mark. Although an evergreen keyword between Red and Blue on permanents seems unlikely at this point (Prowess now being deciduous), has an evergreen keyword between Red and Blue on Sorceries/Instants (or just any noncreature) been considered?

It’s not where we need the overlap.
