Complexity of Tracking Tokens

New 24 Jul 2024 Asked by raytyger 4 Comments

Would "+1/+0" and "+0/+1" aura tokens be an alternative to such counters in a set, or would they be too similar to counters?

They just make tracking and math more complicated.

Blue Removal Effects

New 24 Jul 2024 Asked by khordreblogs 5 Comments

May I ask for an update on the state of blue removal effects like Ravenform?

Blue no longer destroys/exiles creatures and gives the opponent a creature token. That’s solely a white thing. Blue can temporarily change the stats on a creature or enchant it changing the creature as long as it’s enchanted.

Feedback on Bloomburrow Tokens Article

New 23 Jul 2024 Asked by mrmoustachemm 14 Comments

Some website feedback: When I click on an article titled "The Tokens of Bloomburrow", I expect an article that shows all the tokens of Bloomburrow. Don't make me have to click several more links to various other pages; just put them all in that article (like you used to).

I’ll pass along the note.

Tokens Defined by Un-Cards

New 22 Jul 2024 Asked by myheartgoesoontz 2 Comments

We have the technology to create tokens that have their qualities defined elsewhere, including by other cards (i.e. Tarmogoyf tokens). Could this be used to create a token defined by an silver border card that works within the rules? (I.e. create a Krark's Other Thumb token)

The rules could handle it provided the Un-card works in the main rules.

Concept of Aura Tokens

New 21 Jul 2024 Asked by j-waffles 8 Comments

We’ve seen aura tokens in the past in small numbers, but I want to know: do you think aura tokens (probably a predefined one) would do well as a core mechanic to a set? This question is both in terms of potential design space and potential complexity issues of having lots of auras attached to permanents

You should check out Wilds of Eldraine from last year. : )

About Thunder Junction Mercenaries

New 21 Jul 2024 Asked by flakmaniak 3 Comments

Did you contemplate at some point giving the Thunder Junction Mercenaries... Exalted? I mean the name of the ability is wrong for the flavor, but mechanically it's driving at a similar thing to the tap ability you ended up giving them.

The first version we tried for Mercenary tokens is what we printed.

Ubiquitous Tokens Expectation

New 21 Jul 2024 Asked by gcu-sovereign 4 Comments

Is the Ubiquitous Token of a plane something we should expect from visit to visit? Like, how Capenna has its gw citizens, Innistrad has black decayed zombies, LTR had orc armies [applicable to some silmarillion-based visit, I guess]I was looking at the Fish tokens in Bloomburrow and Mercenaries in otj and wondering if those were also more Worldbuilding statements or not.

It’s a mechanical tool that adds flavor, and something we definitely use when shaping a set.

Prizes in Non-acorn Attractions

New 21 Jul 2024 Asked by tameryourentertainer 4 Comments

I'm interested in why there is only one non-acorn attraction that you can claim a prize from. Was this unintentional or was there a reason?

The cards were designed a ways before the decision to make the ones that could be Eternal legal, Eternal legal, so we just converted what we could. The main criteria at determining Eternal legality was “can it work in the rules?”. The one wrinkle was the Teddy Bear token that was a prize for some Attractions was pink and the rules don’t handle pink as a color. We’d already made the token and were using Water Gun Balloon Game as a promo and it also used the same pink Teddy Bear token which kept us from changing its color.

Possibility of 'Artifactfall'

New 19 Jul 2024 Asked by lazcarno 4 Comments

"Is "Artifactfall" something realistic to expect considering how many Treasures, Clues and Food makers exist these days?" "It would have to take artifact token making into account." It seems to me that, regardless of how aggressively or unagressively you costed it, the "smart" way to play such an effect would be using tokens rather than actual artifact cards, since they're cheaper. Correct me if I'm wrong. Assuming I'm right, wouldn't it be better if the mechanic specified "non-token?"

We did Alliance and didn’t feel the need to say nontoken, and we make more creature tokens than artifact tokens.

Printing Process of Tokens

New 18 Jul 2024 Asked by justforaskingmaro 7 Comments

There exists a number of tokens, or variations of, for example one with Throne of Eldraine "human 1/1" (the villager woman) where the other side has the exact same token too. Is this a mistake, a necessary quirk of the printing system, or is there some real reason to do so?

When we make tokens, it gets printed on a sheet. Depending on how many copies exist of a single card in the sheet will dictate how many “versions” of it there are with different backs. If only one appears on the sheet, it will always have the same back.

Booster Pack Collation Details

New 17 Jul 2024 Asked by exactchangeman 2 Comments

With pack coalation, Is it possible to have a specific card slot in a booster be for a card that creates a token and then have the corresponding token in the token slot?

No. The majority of our printers can’t guarantee card A and Card B are in the same booster 100% of the time.

Token Creation and Design Validity

New 17 Jul 2024 Asked by fanfactorpodcast 4 Comments

I remember during GDS2 one of the designers had a mechanic that created a token that was a copy of the creature with swapped P/T. One of the complaints was it meant too many tokens would need to be made.
Now we have offspring, embalm, and eternalize. Does that make the complaints for the design less valid?

The bar to do so is high, but lower than it once was.

Clue Card Mechanic

New 17 Jul 2024 Asked by mercatrix 4 Comments

If a card had “gift a clue” would the reminder text read “they create a clue token” or “they investigate”?

You don’t have your investigate to create a Clue.

Availability of Creature Tokens

New 17 Jul 2024 Asked by cptawesome42 12 Comments

Any chance we could see creature tokens be more readily available? one per every few packs isn't nearly enough to actually obtain and use even half of the tokens present in sets nowadays. I'll finish a limited event, even a prerelease, and only leave with a couple tokens and it's depressing

We’re exploring options to get more tokens into players’ hands.

Tokens and Counters in Bloomburrow

New 17 Jul 2024 Asked by nothingbutland-blog 5 Comments

Does Bloomburrow have more unique tokens and counters in total than Fallen Empires? Seems really close.

Offspring, embalm, and eternalize create a unique token for each creature with the mechanic, so it pumps up the number of tokens. It wouldn’t surprise me if it passes Fallen Empires.

Token Existence

Raccoons and Junk Tokens

Were junk tokens considered for raccons? I think they would have been fun

They were not. Raccoons digging in trash is more about then living in a world with Humans.

Token versus Card Terminology

New 14 Jul 2024 Asked by owlprices 3 Comments

Do you know the reasoning behind the usage of "nontoken creature" instead of "creature card" for effects that refer to the battlefield?

We make token cards, so we don’t like referring to tokens as “not cards”.
