Gingerbrute

Coyote and Roadrunner Mechanics

New 05 Apr 2024 Asked by nectar222 34 Comments

I love the little shoutout with Cunning Coyote and Resilient Roadrunner. Is there an internal codename keyword for the Roadrunner’s “can only be blocked by creatures with haste” activated ability?

Not really. It’s the “Gingerbrute ability”.

Roadrunner's Evasion Mechanic

New 28 Mar 2024 Asked by krinstranger 30 Comments

Is the Resilient Roadrunner evasion (also seen on Gingerbrute) something that R&D is warming up on? It's kind of charming to me, like a hidden Flying variant.

It’s a tool to represent speed that we’ll use when appropriate.

Colored Artifacts Benefits

New 24 Oct 2023 Asked by jeskaisekai 32 Comments

If you ever made a colored version of colorless artifacts (es: red gingerbrute, azorious Icy manipulator etc) do you think they will get some upsides? Like costing less mana, having bigger stats or or having addittional effects?

Colored mana gets more power than the equivalent generic cost, if that’s what you’re asking.

Food Creature Design

New 17 Sep 2023 Asked by spacyakrone 45 Comments

Hi Mark, I had a question about food creatures. Would you say that food as a subtype explicitly requires the creature to have the ability:{2},{T}: you gain 3 lifeOr for example if you were to make a beefier version of gingerbrute (delver of secrets style) called "gingerhulk", could it have an ability like {3},{T}: you gain 5 life

Food creatures need to gain life when sacrificed, but it doesn’t have to be exactly 2 for 3 life. See Vegetation Abomination as an example:

Keyword Feasibility

New 17 Sep 2023 Asked by strymon 27 Comments

Is the Gingerbrute ability worth keywording? Could a limited format endure an archetype built around it? Maybe could finally find a spot for Bonded Fetch?

Haste is not an ability we want at a higher as-fan.

Eldraine Set Feedback

New 04 Sep 2023 Asked by anamelessdemon 112 Comments

As someone who loved original Eldraine but finds Wilds to resonate less, I want to provide some points of criticism.
Roles, conceptually, are a sort of fourth walkk breaking. They take a world where fairytale tropes (and Arthurian) are a theme, and turn it more into a world where the player creates a fairytale with the world’s creatures as raw material. To some this is a positive, but to me it makes the characters themselves hollow. It is also, as a mechanic, more about the structure of fairytales than about the stories themselves. The result is that the world feels less organic to me, and more staged.
I also find the food monsters to be very dissonant from the rest of the world. A single gingerbrute in the context of escaping the kitchen is one thing, but a whole forest inhabited by such creatures feels like an altogether different world.
Lastly, I find the rehashing of fairytales characters from original Eldraine to be uninspired. We already had a rat piper, a beanstalk Jack, a witch with a tempting apple, etc., and now we have them again as different characters.
This isn’t to say there aren’t good things about the set - there are many. But to me, the set overall made the world feel lesser.

Thanks for the feedback. How do others feel about Wilds of Eldraine in contrast to Throne of Eldraine?

Food Themed Creatures

New 31 Aug 2023 Asked by datkrawg 50 Comments

hey Mark a question for wilds of eldraine.
We have whole bunch of food themed horrors in this set but I found it odd that they where not actually food like say gingerbrute. Was this a missed opportunity or a design choice?

Food is an artifact subtype, so creatures that aren’t artifact creatures can’t be Food.

Treasure as Creature Type

New 29 Mar 2022 Asked by ff7hero-blog 49 Comments

Are you prepared for the questions regarding Treaure as a creature type? ;)

People handled Gingerbrute being Food okay. I think the lack of a creature type was the bigger issue with the Shrines.

Shrine as Creature Type

New 02 Feb 2022 Asked by creature-humanteacher 45 Comments

Are there actually a lot of people who think Shrine is a creature type? Did people think Food was a creature type because of Gingerbrute?

Yes, and yes. In their defense, there’s not a good way to signify what subtype things are just by looking at a single card.Ideally, there would have been room for a creature type.

Choosing the Name Metalcraft

New 12 Jan 2022 Asked by natew000 38 Comments

Do you remember if any alternative names were considered when designing metalcraft? I realized today that it’s kind of funny that I’m trying to achieve metalcraft with e.g. a Gingerbrute, a blood token, and a Portable Hole. Almost none of my artifacts are actual metal!

The name made a lot of sense on Mirroidin.

Expanding Haste Mechanic

New 23 Nov 2021 Asked by jjustin1379 41 Comments

Are there more ways to make haste matter after the first turn that you are thinking about putting on cards?

We have done it on occasion with things like Gingerbrute, but it’s not a big goal for us or anything.

Future Non-Token Food Cards

New 02 May 2021 Asked by drummerjon131 36 Comments

If or when: more non-token food cards? Such as Gingerbrute, Golden Egg.

When. There will be more sets with food and some of those could have nontoken artifacts with a Food subtype

All Colors Making Food Artifacts

New 21 Apr 2021 Asked by boberta 26 Comments

Hi mark! I believe you've said in the past that all colors can make food if the needs of a set call for it. If so, can all colors get food-artifacts like gingerbrute or golden egg that let you sac them for lifegain?

Generally, blue and red do not get life gain, so there has to be an important reason structurally to the set for them to get a little food. Could it be a Food artifact creature? It’s even less likely than a by-product of a spell, but yes, it is possible given the right constraints.

Gingerbrute’s Card Specification

New 19 Apr 2021 Asked by catharsis123 48 Comments

I learned the subtype mismatch lesson from Eldraine. Gingerbrute is a Artifact Creature - Food Golem but you can't choose Food as a creature type since it is an artifact type (I think). It's a simple card that teaches lots!

Food is an artifact subtype and not a creature subtype (aka a creature type).

Evasion Based on Speed

New 27 Feb 2021 Asked by kerrjf 51 Comments

Is there any design space around an evasion ability that is based on speed rather then being up high in the hair, like fixed Horsemanship? I'm thinking of something like "This creature can only be blocked by creatures with horsemanship, flying, haste, or flash."

Gingerbrute is playing in this space.

Food Subtype and Sacrifice Ability

New 14 May 2020 Asked by parasect 80 Comments

Fun rules time! I have a Gemrazer mutated on top of a Gingerbrute. In response to an exile spell, I use Gingerbrute’s ability of “2, T, sacrifice this artifact: You gain 3 life.” My friend argues that it no longer has this ability since it is not a Food. They say that the ability is granted by the subtype “Food”, like how the subtype “Forest” adds the ability “T: Add G.” If Blood Moon removes “Forest”, it removes “T: add G.” Are they right about Food, or can Gemgerbruterazer still sac itself?

The Food subtype doesn’t inherently have the sacrifice for life gain ability. We just lined up every Food to be able to do that. So yes, you can still sacrifice the Gingerbrute for life.

Mystic Sanctuary and Gingerbrute Complexity

New 04 Mar 2020 Asked by princevogelfrei-blog-blog 33 Comments

Can you explain how mystic sanctuary and gingerbrute fit into new world order? they seem to have a lot of text and complexity for a common

Neither of those cards seem particularly complicated. Both are a little on the wordy side for common, but you get some wordy commons. I’m not sure what you consider about them that’s hard to understand.

Changes in Printing Haste Tokens

New 25 Feb 2020 Asked by tybonel13 31 Comments

Has the policy on printing tokens with haste changed (Akroan Crusader situation)?

It depends if the set has things where having haste past the first turn matters. For example. Gingerbrute made it matter in Throne of Eldraine.

Gingerbrute Naming Logic

New 30 Dec 2019 Asked by natew000 38 Comments

Is Gingerbrute named that to avoid a name that makes people think of gender (Gingerbread Man, Woman, Person)? To me, “brute” seems strange for a 1/1.

It was a play on “gingerbread”.
