Horsemanship and the Color Pie

New 19 Jun 2024 Asked by sjk9000 4 Comments

As far as color pie is concerned, does Horsemanship occupy a space more similar to Flying or "can't be blocked"? If it showed up as a one-off cameo in a premiere set, could it be on a white card?

It is a flying replacement and is fine in the appropriate colors.

Horsemanship in Color Pie

New 06 Jun 2024 Asked by chewypudding 18 Comments

We've seen Horsemanship on just a couple of cards since Portal 3 Kingdoms. Where would horsemanship fit into the color pie in 2024? Is it just in blue since it's basically just fancy "can't be blocked?" Or is it in more colors like white since we've seen it on a token made by The Girl in the Fireplace?

It’s treated like flying from a color pie perspective.

Horsemanship Cameo Wish

New 02 Apr 2024 Asked by americanlantern 134 Comments

I would like to voice my immense disappointment that there was not a horsemanship cameo in OTJ, I say this before BIG is fully revealed. But I would have loved some random 2/2 with horsemanship and no other text as a cute cameo in the Wild West set.

We tend to cameo cards that play mechanically well over it’s funny to read once.

Unblockable Mechanics

New 31 Mar 2024 Asked by escapingburger 46 Comments

Hello! When you have a "can't be blocked except by creatures with haste" effect as on Resilient Roadrunner, do you balance it as if it made the creature unblockable altogether? Or does it get discounted somewhat since haste is more common than, say, shadow or horsemanship?P.S.: Please distribute high fives for whoever's responsible for Prairie Dog (maybe it's you). I sent an ask maybe a year ago about expanding Magic's squirrel family, so I'm pretty pleased by this one.

It’s treated similar to can’t be blocked.High fives shall be delivered (not to me though).

PTK Flying Exception

It’s worth noting that one set, Portal Three Kingdoms, doesn’t have flying, though it does have horsemanship

That is true. I forgot about it.

Horsemanship Cameo Possibility

New 04 Mar 2024 Asked by sjk9000 28 Comments

Is Horsemanship on the table for a cameo mechanic in a premiere set? Like as a one-off flavorful way to make something unblockable?

It’s on the table, but not a high priority. Horsemanship did cameo in Unfinity.

Horsemanship to Mounted

New 20 Dec 2023 Asked by strodeviking 23 Comments

Hey Mark, If/When. I am a huge fan of Horsemanship, but I wondering if it would be possible to change the keyword to “Mounted”, that way if a creature is depicted as riding another animal, for example Tolsimir riding Voja, they could be on the same combat level as a horserider? I know it’s likely a big if, but I just wanted to see your thoughts on this.

I don’t think we plan to use Horsemanship enough to warrant the change.

Unicorns and Pegasuses

When will unicorn and Pegasus cards get horsemanship like they rightfully deserve?

I think they are more likely to get batched with Horses than anything else.

If/when. A full time return of Horsemanship.

If. I think we’ll stick with flying.

Old Keywords in Commander

New 07 Oct 2023 Asked by myheartgoesoontz 49 Comments

One thing I appreciate about Commander design - especially Universes Beyond where there's a huge number of new designs and capturing the flavor is of utmost importance - is that there's a willingness to use older, retired keywords. Things like Shadow, Horsemanship, Landwalk, Fear, etc are incredibly evocative flavorfully, but were removed because of play pattern concerns, particularly for Limited.

A small use of that resource can be powerful.

Horsemanship Allotment

Does a Flying demon on Thunder Junction mean we won't see Horsemanship?

We used up our allotment of horsemanship in this card:

Horsemanship's Color Spread

New 16 Jul 2023 Asked by hobblinharry-blog 38 Comments

Horsemanship has a pretty decent spread across all colors except green, which makes sense since it was supposed to just be a 3 kingdom themed version of flying, but if we ever were to see horsemanship on new cards, could we see it start to take its own place in the color pie to differentiate it more from flying?

I don’t expect us doing horsemanship other than the random one-of jokey nod.

Horsemanship Counters

If or When:Horsemanship counters?

If. I don’t expect horsemanship outside of very infrequent throwback jokes in supplemental sets.

Reach Blocking Horsemanship

New 06 Jun 2023 Asked by marrinara-sauce 35 Comments

Has there ever been any consideration to letting Reach also block Horsemanship?

We think it would cause more confusion than it’s worth.

Horsemanship and LotR

New 06 Jun 2023 Asked by pontemosca 29 Comments

For LotR, Did You considered changing Horsemanship so it can be blocked by creatures with flying?

Even if it had the functionality we wanted, the flavor isn’t great. The things you would want evasive aren’t all on horseback. And not everything on horseback would you want to be evasive.

Flying vs. Horsemanship

New 05 Jun 2023 Asked by 22bebo 36 Comments

I'm sure you answered this, but was horsemanship ever considered in place of flying in LTR since there are so few flying creatures in the source material?

We explored a new evasion mechanic that could be blocked by creatures with the mechanic or flying. We don’t like how Horsemanship interacts outside of the limited play. So, no.

Horsemanship and Evasion

New 31 May 2023 Asked by sjtsquid 40 Comments

For the flying problem, was horsemanship ever considered? I imagine that it might have the opposite problem, that many characters who ride horses don't want horsemanship.

Horsemanship doesn’t do a great job of capturing the flavor of evasion.

Flying Creatures Mechanic

New 30 May 2023 Asked by elvish-mysticcc 43 Comments

Loving what we’ve seen so far from tales of Middle-Earth! A slightly silly question: since The Lord of the Rings includes many steeds and relatively few flying things, was there ever any consideration of using horsemanship?

The lack of flying creatures was an issue we tackled throughout vision design and set design. We didn’t consider horsemanship, but we did explore a new mechanic that was unblockable except by this creatures with this mechanic or flying. In the end, we were able to find enough flying creatures that it wasn’t needed.

Set Without Evergreen

New 14 May 2023 Asked by doopboopdoop 37 Comments

If you had to make a set without evergreen keywords, would you just replace flying with horsemanship or is that too easy

It’s merely a hypothetical exercise as it would be folly to actually do it. In that exercise, replacing a mechanic for another identical mechanic with a different name seems like cheating.
