Outlaws Mechanic Trivia

New 17 May 2024 Asked by zendikon-sage 63 Comments

Hi Mark,It’s my birthday and me and my friends are going to play some OTJ sealed today. In honor of this, can I get some trivia on Outlaws, my favorite mechanic to come out of the set?

We made a list for Outlaw of any creature type that might make sense:
  • Assassin
  • Barbarian
  • Berserker
  • Minion
  • Mercenary
  • Ninja
  • Pirate
  • Rebel
  • Rogue
  • Warlock
Assassin and Rogue felt like automatic includes. We added Mercenary because we wanted the “henchperson” token to be a Mercenary. The creative team asked us to add Warlock because we needed to have an outlaw spellcaster to hit all the card concepts. That’s what we handed over to set design. When making a batch, we do between two and five, with three being optimal. Four seemed in a good spot and allowed set design to add something if they had to. They added Pirate because of all the Pirate cards in The Lost Caverns of Ixalan. We did talk through many of the others. We considered bringing Minion back instead of doing Mercenary (we stopped doing it a while ago). We talked a lot about Ninja. In the end though, we felt this collection best served the mechanic.Happy Birthday!

Beast Type Explanation

New 31 Mar 2024 Asked by thisusernameisridiculous 38 Comments

Do you have a DtW where you break down Beast a little more as a type? I'm trying to figure out where it fits in the devolution of the type line, and I just read "Human Barbarian Beast," on [[Barbarian Outcast]],"Beast Horror Spirit," on [[Chupacabra Echo]],"Nightmare Beast Elemental," on [[Brokkos, Apex of Forever]], and"Plant Elemental Beast," on [[Carnivorous Moss Beast]], so it feels like there's been a few changes on where it should be placed?

Beast is one of a small handful of creature types that can fill both race and class slots depending on how it’s used.

Set Roster Decisions

New 26 Mar 2024 Asked by yeckit-blog 60 Comments

Loving things so far but a couple of questions, why weren't Ninjas considered outlaws and was clash considered for this set? The latter seems like it would fit flavor as a standoff with the higher cost being who drew and shot quicker.

Repeated batches, meaning things we use on multiple cards in the same set, are normally restricted between two and five items, with three being the sweet spot. We needed Rogues and Warlocks to hit all the creative executions we wanted. Mercenary was needed because that was our henchperson token. We also knew Assassin’s Creed with its Assassin typal theme was coming. We turned those four in when we handed off from vision, leaving one potential space open so set design could add something if needed. That something was Pirate due to all the ones added by The Lost Caverns of Ixalan. As I show in today’s article, we considered all the following:AssassinBarbarianBerserkerMinionMercenaryNinjaPirateRebelRogueWarlockThere just wasn’t room for all of them. Also, we prioritized what would be in the set. So some things, like Ninja, didn’t make the cut.As for clash, it’s just wasn’t popular enough when we first did it to bring it back.

Alter Creature Types

New 21 Mar 2024 Asked by cheesedurian2 35 Comments

Can Blue alter creature types in permanents? For example, Blue changes Lovisa Coldeyes to "Each creature that’s a Barbarian, a Warrior, or a FISH gets +2/+2 and has haste."

It could hack creature types in rules text.

Planar Die Effect

New 19 May 2023 Asked by patches-the-scarecrow 20 Comments

Hello Mark! I recently build a Vrondiss, Rage of Ancients deck to play planeschase with all my friends but i was wondering, any affect like Wyll, Blade of Frontiers or barbarian class that states specifically "when you roll a die roll two and ignore the lower result" how does that work with the planar die?

It doesn’t as it doesn’t have a “lower result”.

Dice Roll Options

New 24 Sep 2022 Asked by kidcincinnati 21 Comments

RE: Dice rolling! Thanks for answering my previous question; to be clear, I was requesting more cards that give additional dice rolls and offer you the OPTION to choose which of your rolls you want to count. Wyll, Blade of Frontiers and Barbarian Class, the two current eternal legal cards that influence dice rolls, force you to take the higher of the two, rather than providing a choice. Since bigger doesn't always equal better for UNF, I was requesting one that gives extra rolls AND options!

You’re in luck. Unfinity has a number of die manipulation cards.

Die Roll Manipulations

New 24 Sep 2022 Asked by evscfa1 14 Comments

In regards to the question regarding Wyll/Barbarian class and dice rolling in Unfinity, i think the primary issue is that the only eternal legal versions of Krark's Other Thumb all force the higher roll on the dice. The fact that the Unfinity cards don't always want the higher number makes it rather difficult to use with the eternal legal versions of Krark's Other Thumb effects.

There are a bunch of eternal legal cards in Unfinity that let you manipulate die rolls.

Die Roll Preferences

New 24 Sep 2022 Asked by kidcincinnati 22 Comments

Can we get more eternal legal effects that allow you to *choose* which die roll you want to retain when you get bonus rolls? It's a bit of a bummer when certain dice rolling designs don't play nice with Wyll, Blade of Frontiers or Barbarian class just because they *force* the player to select the higher roll (which is not always the best option across a number of cards).

Unfinity die rolling doesn’t force highest roll because a lot of cards don’t want that.

Category of Shivan Zombie

New 12 Jun 2022 Asked by ginkasai 31 Comments

Zombie is used as a race most of the time, right? So why is Shivan Zombie ordered as "Phyrexian Barbarian Zombie" on gatherer?

Zombie is sometimes a race, sometimes a class. It depends what other creature types are on the card.

Considering Errata to Soldiers

New 09 Feb 2022 Asked by james-stors 62 Comments

I know Samurai have their fans, but did you ever consider an errata to Soldiers so they would have more tribal synergies?

Yes, we could just call Samurai and Warriors and Soldiers and Berserkers and Barbarians (and some more I’m forgetting) all Fighters, but Magic is better not having the creature types too trimmed down. It creates more opportunity for different decks.

Interaction of Barbarian Class and Krark's Thumb

New 02 Dec 2021 Asked by temptsu 40 Comments

Hi, I have a Silver Bordered Question on How Barbarian Class + Krark's Other Thumb would Interact with each other?

So let’s say you have both out and another card makes you roll a six sided die. You would eventually roll two dice for the initial die roll and two dice for the additional die roll. You then pick which of the first two die rolls to count as your initial roll and which of the second two dice rolled count as you second die rolled. You then choose between those two dice which one you want to count as your die roll. Or in a simpler practical sense, roll four dice and pick one.

Missing Class Cards in Decks

The AFR RB deck had warlock, and the RG had barbarian. Neither Bant nor Esper had a class card

Role of Barbarian Class

New 02 Jul 2021 Asked by lhurgyof-blog 36 Comments

Would barbarian class have you roll the planar die twice, then do both results (since there isn't a lower result to ignore), or does it not effect the planar die at all?

It can’t affect the planar die as it can’t have a lower result.

Rewriting Card Terminology

New 07 Jun 2021 Asked by smrgnt-blog 32 Comments

Does existing templating allow for the possibility of a card whose effect changes the definition of what "party" is (and what constitutes a full one) while it's in play, say, to include Barbarian/Warlock/etc? It sounds like it'd be a text nightmare, in any case.

While it’s possible the rules might allow it, we tend not to have individual cards rewrite what terminology means.

Barbarians vs Berserkers

As far as Magic creature types, what's the difference between a Barbarian and a Berserker?

Self-control.

Choosing Party Types

New 13 Sep 2020 Asked by glimmermoon 37 Comments

Why is it that for zdr you guys put warriors clarics rouges, and wizards. Do you deside that it wouldn't be worth it to add let's say barbarians or duids?

We considered adding druids, but four proved both more aesthetic to the trope and worked better for balancing the mechanic.

Barbarian vs Warrior Classification

New 04 May 2020 Asked by bcrossfire 29 Comments

Why isn't Barbarian the standard fighter class for red? We have Warriors, but Barbarian carries a more distinct flavor, and a lot of the Warriors that appear in red could reasonably be classified as Barbarians.

That’s not true. Only a small subset of the Warriors in red would be Barbarians, even if we were being loose in definition.

Status of Barbarian Creatures

Is barbarian still a supported creature type?

I believe so, but it’s not used often.

Cross Tribe Support

New 17 Jul 2019 Asked by aringa90 14 Comments

Hello Mark,From what I understand, the issue about creating new creature types is to find a balance between flavor and tribal/mechanical support. What do you think about creating more cards with "cross tribe" support in mind? (Especially for niche creature types; I really liked lovisa coldeyes supporting barbarians and berserkers for example)

We do cross creature types where it flavorfully makes sense.

Creature Type Consolidation

New 18 Feb 2019 Asked by lookingupanddown 39 Comments

During the Grand Creature Type Update, was it ever considered to consolidate bigger creature types amongst each other? I'm thinking collapsing Samurai, Knight, Barbarian, Berserker, and/or Soldier into the Warrior creature type.

The goal of creature types is not just maximizing tribal interactions. There’s a lot of flavor dividing up certain categories (such as magic caster or combatant).
