Looney Tunes Characters' Colors

New 27 Jul 2024 Asked by bokkiedoke 4 Comments

Would most Looney Tunes character be primary or secondary Red? Most of them are pretty impulsive and very emotional, even the more measured characters like Bugs Bunny and Marvin the Martian throw a fit and attack people regularly.

Certain genres lean toward a certain color like horror and black.

Cosmic Horror Typing Considerations

Was there ever any consideration to re-type Cosmic Horror as an Eldrazi?

Not that I know of.

Implied Horror and Bananas

New 16 Jul 2024 Asked by zanthr 5 Comments

in blogatog world, could you have a card titled something like "unspeakable horror" and then it's implied to be a banana?

That’s how we’d have to do it. : )

Excitement for Upcoming Sets

New 14 Jul 2024 Asked by shahrathestoryteller 8 Comments

Hi Mark! Just wanna give shout out to awesome sets you have planned for the Dragonstorm arc: Bloomburrow for the high fantasy traditionalists and typal lovers, Duskmourn for the modern horror fans and a different take on an Enchantment matters set, The Death Race as a fun exploration of the Omenpaths and finally a set centered around Vehicles (I mean it's not confirmed but…c'mon), and a long-awaited Return to Tarkir set for Magic veterans and those who waited for a wedge faction set! I am absolutely stoked for all of these sets, and I am glad that Magic embraces variety enough to take risks for modern, novel aesthetics while still preserving old, familiar aesthetics!

I’m excited you’re excited.

Comparing Duskmourn and OG Innistrad

New 13 Jul 2024 Asked by strymon 10 Comments

“All Magic sets have some humor, but Duskmourn is a horror set at its core.”Just curious, how does this compare to OG Innistrad?

They’re playing into different aspects of horror, but both are trying to be scary.

Themes in Duskmourn Set

New 12 Jul 2024 Asked by 360noscopediceroll 2 Comments

Hi Mark, I genuinely love magic the gathering. Thanks for spending so much of your career invested in this game. I appreciate you for it. Earlier I read a fan question asking if we were going to see a serious set. You said that Duskmourn was. From the spoilers offered so far, I got the impression that this would be not be serious, based on art featuring of smiling elves wearing fanny packs, ghost busters weapons, and purple pet monsters. Are these outliers compared to what the set really is?

All Magic sets have some humor, but Duskmourn is a horror set at its core.

Excitement Over Duskmourn

New 08 Jul 2024 Asked by player4our 5 Comments

Hey Mark, Just wanted to share my excitement for Duskmourn. I know everyone is focused on Bloomburrow, but Duskmourn aligns perfectly with my interests and everything shown has gotten me extremely excited! I love not only the 80s inspiration, but also taking from internet horror culture. Please pass high-fives to all parties who worked hard to make this set as promising as it looks!

Will do.

Bloomburrow Guide Timing Critique

New 05 Jul 2024 Asked by cle-guy 61 Comments

I am a skeptic of modern stuff in MTG and not a fan of horror. I LOVED the intro to Duskmourn and I’m thrilled for it to arrive. I do have a critique: I wish Wizards process the Planeswalkers guide to Bloomburrow before the story started as I found it hard to dive into it

I’ll pass that note along.

Dissonance from Modern Things

New 04 Jul 2024 Asked by respectablegeek 3 Comments

I wonder if my issue over Duskmourne is from a slightly different angle to most? I don’t mind Magic expanding what fits in universe. But I’m finding massive dissonance from the modern things only existing as the Horror setting. Most multiverse inhabitants won’t know what a TV is, so it is odd having twisted TVs without other grounding context! Horror is often found in twisting the commonplace, so here it only works from an external perspective.

Kaladesh, Kamigawa, and New Capenna all have modern things and aren’t horror settings.

Card Name Tropes

New 04 Jul 2024 Asked by horsecrash 30 Comments

Mark, I'm a big horror fan, but I'm not sure about how blatant and trope-y some of these card names are. I mean, seriously, "Black Cat"? "Bump in the Night"? "Creepy Doll"? "Evil Twin"? I don't think this "Innistrad" plane is going to be a hit... ;)

Excitement for Duskmourn

New 03 Jul 2024 Asked by livefromtheloam 21 Comments

Hi Mark! Guy who missed the Gen Con announcement here again. I just wanted to add to the chorus of people saying how excited they are for Duskmourn, specifically BECAUSE it's a more modern take on horror. I was worried I'd find it boring because Phyrexians, Eldrazi, and Innistrad have all done horror in MtG already. Instead we have neon lighting, puffy vests, static portals, possessed appliances, and a gang of plucky youngsters joining up with roving survivors. Neon Dynasty was the first setting to really prove that futuristic settings could be done and done well, while still feeling like it's in the multiverse we all know and love. I'm sure Duskmourn will adapt a more modern world just as well.

I can’t wait for you to see more of it.

Modern Horror and Magic

New 03 Jul 2024 Asked by zeropercentdiscountcomic 20 Comments

For what it’s worth, I actually think the biggest issue with Duskmourn isn’t the “modern” stuff, so much as Magic’s trend towards so many cards representing a genre trope, often literally by name. That said, it’s really exacerbated by the modern setting, which is unusual territory and thus feels like it’s there only to really ensure those tropes and references are as blunt as possible, rather than being a part of a cohesive world.A third factor that really makes this not gel for me is that modern horror relies on a threat that is anomalous and unique to be scary. Innistrad made a world full of Frankensteins and Draculas into a believable ecosystem, and I just don’t know that I can get there with a world full of Jasons, Freddys, Samaras, etc.All of this is to say, I would be a bit disappointed if this setting does poorly and the takeaway is just “no more tennis shoes.” I know there’s an audience for the tropey cards, but it feels like they’ve become so numerous and so blunt that it’s overshadowed the world building and left me far less curious and excited about new planes than I used to be. Generally, a magic plane with more modern technology and culture intrigues me, but when it’s just a vehicle for references I lose interest.

Please read the Planeswalkers Guide to Duskmorn:

Themes of Hypothetical Body Set

New 02 Jul 2024 Asked by lockark 1 Comments

You answered a question about the idea of a "inside a body" plane for MTG, saying it's on the short list. Would this hypothetical set be a more abstraction like how Ozmosos Jones depicts the inside of a body? Or would be be more like the horror of living inside of such a environment like "Mystery Fleshpit national Park"?

The genre is more adventure than horror.

Urban Fantasy Setting Concern

New 01 Jul 2024 Asked by elderaktis 9 Comments

Hi, Mark. Not sure if I can quite explain this, but I'll try.Straight urban fantasy isn't terribly interesting to me, at least as a magic setting, especially if we're distinguishing it from "masquerade" as the other asker put it (i.e., magic's existence is a secret). I think that's because urban fantasy describes a setting that's exactly like the real, modern world, and the only difference is that there's magic. In other words, "magic and magic users exist" is the whole hook, what the burden of appealing to the consumer of that media falls onto. But, like . . . "magic and magic users exist" is the ENTIRE game! It doesn't feel like it does enough to differentiate itself from the rest of the multiverse. So, I think an urban fantasy setting needs to do one of three things: have a strong, unique hook beyond just "it's a modern world with magic"; be more focused, like how Duskmourn isn't just "80s fantasy" but "80s horror film"; or be combined with another concept, like how Ixalan is both "pirate world" AND "Mesoamerican world".Sorry if I rambled a bit there, but tldr: I for one would need a more detailed pitch than just "It's the urban fantasy plane/set!" to be remotely interested in it.

As with any world, there would be more details woven into it. I was just asking people’s thoughts on urban fantasy as a larger category.

Urban Fantasy in Future Sets

New 30 Jun 2024 Asked by sailorviolet92 29 Comments

Duskmourn seems like modern day urban fantasy taken over by horror. New Capenna seems like urban fantasy set 100 years ago. I love both. Any chance we'll see straightforward urban fantasy anytime soon?

It’s on the very long “short list” of potential worlds. How do all of you feel about us doing an urban fantasy set?

Spacing Duskmourn and Innistrad

New 30 Jun 2024 Asked by doopboopdoop 3 Comments

Would you try and space out Duskmourn and Innistrad or try and have them closer due to how much synergy they have

I don’t think we’d currently do two horror themed sets back to back.

Planeswalker's Guide Release Evaluation

New 30 Jun 2024 Asked by andalon-historian 8 Comments

I want to voice my dissent on releasing the Planeswalker's Guide before the story. It seems to have been the right decision on a meta level, in that people didn't "get" the set and now they think it's awesome, so fair enough. But the first look makes it sound like a lot of the story will have to do with hidden information. Nashi is missing in a mysterious haunted house-- what horrors could lurk? What is the evil power about? What kinds of monsters are lurking just out of sight? Well, now we know. It seems like a huge blow to the story (not to say it can't still be good of course).

The article might not have told you everything. : )

Praise for Duskmourne Art Direction

New 30 Jun 2024 Asked by hoiohoi 3 Comments

I’d just like to say the art direction for the horror aspects of Duskmourne is incredible! The art for New Phyrexia is my all time favorite, and the vibes from what we’ve seen so far is the closest Magic’s come to it in decades! I for one am loving this set already!

Happy to hear that.

Impact of Standard Rotation Changes

New 29 Jun 2024 Asked by bobinthings 2 Comments

Does the change to 3-year standard rotations, have any impact on the ethos of “someone’s 1 or 2 is someone else’s 9 or 10”/“if everyone likes it but but no one loves it you fail”? For people that really don’t like something it’s then 3 whole years before the game moves on from it (in standard - the only format that does move on).
I’ve been playing on and off since 2004, got back in at the start of this year when my 2nd daughter was born and I got arena on my phone as something to do when sat up in the night. I’m okay with Innistrad and New Phyrexia but from what I’ve seen so far the horror vibe in Duskmourn is just too far for me, to the point that I’m doubting I’ll bother with Bloomburrow because I can’t see myself enjoying Duskmourn in standard all the way through to Autumn 2027, the year before my 6-month old daughter starts primary school.

Magic excels at providing lots of variety, so people can pick and choose what they want to play. It doesn’t excel at excluding things, because the thing you don’t like is someone else’s favorite thing. 9&10’s tend to come with 1&2’s because things that provoke reactions most often provoke positive *and* negative reaction. There are formats where you can only focus on the thing you like - limited formats & cube.

Duskmourn Set Appreciation

New 29 Jun 2024 Asked by random-name417 5 Comments

Hi, justed wanted to say that I love the idea of Duskmourn even as someone who doesn't like horror at all. The preview panel made me pretty excited for a set I had little interest in besides slight curiosity. I quite like it when magic is willing to try out new ideas and genres. It's a multiverse, after all, so why not make it diverse and different. Please send thanks to whoever decided to release the planeswalker's guide before the story. As a Vorthos, I'm very happy. Also, as someone who started with Kaldheim and loved it, I'm glad to see Tyvar and Niko back!

Glad you’re enjoying it.
