Storm Scale Zero Explanation

New 26 Jul 2024 Asked by j-waffles 8 Comments

Re: zero isn’t a thing [on the storm scale]Can we say that “being a magic card” is a zero? A one means it’s something that every set has, so in my eyes, a zero must mean something that every card has. As far as I know, the only thing every magic card has in common is that they are magic cards.

The scene is 1-10. There is no 0.

Excitement for Bloomburrow

New 24 Jul 2024 Asked by kwain-itinerant-meddler 1 Comments

Wazzzaaaaap, Mark da Shark,Just wanted to send kudos and share my excitement about so much of Bloomburrow! It's gonna be my first prerelease in a long while, since M20, I think, as well as there's so many things to love about it. I've been a big fan of Doug Beyer since Kaladesh, glad he was the lead designer on this set. Also super pumped to be getting both a revisit to the Heroic mechanic in Valiant, one of my favorite mechanics from Theros, and the amount of rabbit typal support. My Cadira commander deck is gonna go through a major redesign when the set is properly out. Hope you have a lovely day!

I’m glad you’re so excited. I can’t wait to hear all the prerelease stories.

Dream About Designer's House

New 23 Jul 2024 Asked by banksyguythrowingthings 8 Comments

Hi Mark, sorry if weird but last night I dreamed I was a guest in your house. It was a little awkward but you were very nice. Outside your kitchen window there were some very aggro squirrels. Just thought you might like to know (or maybe not, but here we are).

I’m glad I was a good dream host. I’ll keep an eye out for dream squirrels.

Batch Preview for New Type

New 21 Jul 2024 Asked by dude1818 1 Comments

Is it possible to use a batch to preview an upcoming card type, such as "[existing type], [existing type], and [new type] are blahs"? Or are Eye of Ugin style previews basically impossible without blocks?

It’s possible, but needs a compelling reason. It’s not dependent on blocks.

Heterochromia and Avatar Color

New 13 Jun 2024 Asked by zanmor 7 Comments

I think you've answered this before but if I have heterochromia or have two different colored eye contacts in, Avatar of Me is both colors, correct? Mostly asking so the person seeking more colors can really game the system. ;)

Correct. Kate Bozworth’s Avatar of Me is blue and hazel.

Understanding 'Each Color' in Acorn Games

New 13 Jun 2024 Asked by eredithdriscol 4 Comments

Per culation's ask about "each color" in acorn games, would having Water Gun Balloon Game or Sword of Dungeons and Dragons, which reference pink and gold but aren't those colors themselves, count for those colors being "active"?What about if I had Avatar of Me in the graveyard (and brown eyes)?

To count an additional color you have to have a permanent of that color on the battlefield, not just a permanent that refers to it.

Hexproof and Un-Games

New 13 Jun 2024 Asked by culation 4 Comments

CR 702.1c states that "the same is true for" effects apply to each of a keyword's variants separately. 702.11g states that "hexproof from each " is shorthand for one variant of hexproof per possible quality of that characteristic. This means in non-Un games, discarding Breaker of Creation (which has hexproof from each color) to Indominus Rex, Alpha gives five counters and thus draws five cards. How many cards do you draw in an Un game? (In particular, does every eye color count?)

In Un-games, when counting colors, you count the five normal colors plus any color of permanents you have. You have the gold Dragon token from Sword of Dungeons & Dragons, you’re now at six. You also have a brown Avatar of Me, you’re now at seven. You have a pink Teddy bear counter from Gift Shop, you’re now at eight.

Eggs.

Tokens vs Cards

New 20 May 2024 Asked by banksyguythrowingthings 18 Comments

I'd question the "no flavor difference btwn tokens and cards". To me, most tokens feel like extras in a movie. Some citizens, some goblins, some zombies, even a sea monster. There are exceptions like legendary/named tokens of course (often sidekicks), but in general tokens feel a bit more "generic" than cards. P.s.: I love tokens, this is not an attack on them - just vibes.

I’ve had this conversation with the creative team many times. If a Bear and a token Bear are both in front of you, there’s no way to tell them apart with the naked eye. It’s just two Bears.

Meeting Sleep Habits

New 17 May 2024 Asked by cassiesuccubus 45 Comments

Hi Mark. I've heard rumors that you sometimes fall asleep in meetings. Is that true, are you a meeting-sleeper Mark? And do you paint eyes on your eyelids to get away with it? :p

It all depends on how much sleep I get. Usually I’m fine, but sometimes having kids really cuts into your sleep. I was at my worst when my kids were young.

Comforting Message on Grief

New 28 Apr 2024 Asked by shahrathestoryteller 40 Comments

Hi Mark. I was very moved by your podcast about the memories of your father. Many condolences. I lost a close family member too recently, and your podcast helped me a lot to process that grief, so I'd like to thank you for that. In return, I'd like to provide something that more or less helped me go through my own grief:

"In the beginning of your life,
Your parents gave you breath.
Your parents gave you vision and hearing.
They give you memories when you had none.
They are your voice when you had none.
They help you and are your hands and legs.
And though they eventually let you go, they are always your guidance throughout your life.

At the end of your parents' life,
When they begin to walk to the next life, you become their guidance.
When they become frail, you become their legs and their hands.
When they become tired, you become their voice.
When they forget, you become their memories.
When they close their eyes, you become their eyes and ears.
And when they are gone, you become their breath."

Hope this helps.

That was very nice. Thanks.

A Touching Father-Son Relationship

New 28 Apr 2024 Asked by impolitemtg 79 Comments

howdy Mark! I'm listeing to your podcast about your dad and I am bawling my eyes out! I play magic with my dad, so a lot of this hits very close to home! My dad started playing in 94, then I think stopped in 96 or 97. Then I got into magic in 2015 which brought him back to it as well. And we still both play. Listening to this is really reminding me to cherish my dad while I still have him.
Getting to share something as special as Magic with your dad is a blessing I wish more people got to know. We owe Gene a huge debt of gratitude for being the one who ignited your planeswalker spark! And of course we owe you for showing us the Multiverse! Thank you so much to the whole Rosewater family! I hope we can get some kind of commemorative card for your dad the way we got one for Sheldon. The legends who helped shape this game deserve that! I'm gonna go finish up the podcast and cry some more now. Thank you Mark.
CheersDAVE

I’m so glad you enjoyed it.My dad did design one Magic card:
The playtest name was Radio Controlled Flyer.

Rules Regarding Color Representation

New 21 Apr 2024 Asked by lazcarno 21 Comments

Regarding the "soft rule" you discussed in your "The Question" DTW, would you consider the card Sage of the Inward Eye to be a violation of this rule? That card has always bothered me, because it doesn't feel red to me. I could have bought it as white-blue, but I noted at the time that it could actually have been mono-white; and this DTW episode seems to confirm that even making it white-blue instead of mono-white would be considered undesirable.

As I explained in the episode, it’s hard for every multicolor card to mechanically represent every color. We do try, but don’t force it because it just leads to overly wordy, complicated cards. With multicolor factions, we do try to make sure the card feels like it belongs in that faction.Remember a “soft rule” is defined as a rule we make an effort to follow, but allow ourselves to deviate from if other issues pop up. That means it’s hard to be a violation of a soft rule.

Nicol Bolas Presence

New 01 Apr 2024 Asked by benrainbase 54 Comments

I know the whole set hasn’t been revealed yet, and I know story reasons why, but I’ll just note that it’s a bit odd to have a Villain set that doesn’t have Nicol Bolas in it.
I am keeping an eye out for Tezzeret.

Nicol Bolas “takes a lot up of the oxygen” of any set he’s in.

Translating Punny Names

New 31 Mar 2024 Asked by jarethbulge 147 Comments

Hey Maro! I don't have beef with the punny card names, they give me a chuckle and I like when the tone of magic varies a little. I am curious if you can comment on how they get translated, though- Holy Cow seems like a distinctly English phrase, and even concepts like a Red Herring or a Private Eye probably don't have one-for-one equivalencies in other languages. I know it's not your department, but do you know how they tackle this problem?

The translations usually look for humor that makes more sense in that language. They’re usually not direct translations.

Joke Card Dynamics

New 30 Mar 2024 Asked by honor-basquiat 239 Comments

Some thoughts on "Holy Cow":I don't think it's specifically an issue with Holy Cow in a vacuum.Instead, it's more about the massive increase in proliferation of "meme cards" and "joke cards", cards that make references to real life idioms, seek to break the 4th wall in some way, make puns or jokes that pander to everyone, naming cards after a ubiquitous a turn of phrase in pop culture, etc.Sometimes it's cute and whimsical but when it misses, it can feel pretty cringe. I don't want my favorite game to have a bunch of cringe references which becomes a possibility when Magic makes dozens of "joke cards". It also makes the Magic world and universe feel less bespoke and more like a series of existing references.

For what it's worth, I think the Holy Cow reference would have been funnier if it weren't so obvious (i.e. design the card as is with the same art but name it something different).

Years ago, I made this card:
I love puns, so much so that I wove this one into the story (this was the Weatherlight Saga that Michael and I created). Very, very few players got it. (The pun is “squeeze toy”, the squeezable rubber toy that makes noise when you squeeze it, like you would give a dog.) Every time I explain this, I get more people say, “I never got that.”I have nothing against the subtle joke now and then (and there are some pretty subtle jokes in the Un-sets), but I would rather do jokes that the majority of players get. If the trade of is some people roll their eyes and say “that’s not my style of humor”, but many others laugh and enjoy it, I’ll gladly take that. A joke more people get is “funnier” in the aggregate.

Planeswalkers' Static Abilities

New 23 Mar 2024 Asked by tybonel13 35 Comments

Is a "wild" static ability going to be a mainstay of planeswalkers moving forward? The new Kaya was the one that caught my eye the most as probably the most out-there static we've gotten, but looking over recent planeswalkers I've had a sort of "It does WHAT?" reaction to most of them. Chandra, Ashiok, Quintorius, Kaya, and Oko all either have a static that's really weird, really strong, or both.

Static abilities are fair game for planeswalker design, and it’s the area that has the largest untapped design space. It’s a tool we plan to keep using. I’m not sure how “wild” all of them will be.

Alter Creature Types

New 21 Mar 2024 Asked by cheesedurian2 35 Comments

Can Blue alter creature types in permanents? For example, Blue changes Lovisa Coldeyes to "Each creature that’s a Barbarian, a Warrior, or a FISH gets +2/+2 and has haste."

It could hack creature types in rules text.
