Praise for Frodo Design

New 16 Mar 2024 Asked by jozogozo 24 Comments

I know it came out last year, but could you high five the designer of the uncommon Frodo Baggins card? It's been by far my favorite Brawl commander since it came out and is a huge flavor homerun. It's very satisfying on many levels to beat a board of huge overbearing creatures with the little halfling.

Will do.

Kithkin to Halflings?

Hi Mark,Is there a chance that Kithkin get erratrd to Halflings?

There’s always a chance, but I wouldn’t say it’s a particularly big chance.

Kithkin Versus Halfling

New 05 Aug 2023 Asked by jjustin1379 31 Comments

Why do we have to choose between kithkin and halfling? Why not kithkin halfing? People like additive stuff. You do not need to subtract

It would be hard to have Kithkin with class creature types, especially if they’re legendary.

Kithkin Halfling Debate

New 04 Aug 2023 Asked by wk-vylion 38 Comments

I would like to reach to your followers from a while ago who opposed errata'ing Kithkin as Halflings, and I think I'd have better reach through you, I hope that's ok. I want to bring up the idea that just like Ixalan or Kamigawa goblins aren't the same as in other planes (and even in Kamigawa, the Akki have their own unique tribe name), Lorwyn "halflings" can keep their unique lore identity as Kithkins, while sharing the mechanical identity, and thus gaining better tribe support. Everybody wins?

I’ll do a poll.

UB Creature Types

New 23 Jul 2023 Asked by littleorlock 45 Comments

About UB and creature types: Is it up to the licensor whether new creature types are needed? For example, Warhammer got Astartes instead of Human, but LotR got Halfling instead of Hobbit.

It’s up to us. I think we’re finding our feet on where to be generic versus specific. I think we’re learning that generic is better when it can tie into existing mechanical themes.

White's Typal Dominance

New 16 Jul 2023 Asked by vaaste111 34 Comments

Why does white tend to be the 'Typal colour' in nearly every set? We've had Citizens, Spirits, Humans, Halflings, Soldiers, Knights and Pyrexians in the last few years?

Thematically, white is the most about groups working together, and it most often has go-wide themes in limited.

Would people like that?

Kithkin to Halflings?

New 31 May 2023 Asked by vodalianjavelineer 52 Comments

Has there been any discussion on making kithkin into halflings? (Similar to the hound/dog change?)

I assume when we go to a world with Kithkin, we’ll have that conversation.

Hobbits as Halflings

New 30 May 2023 Asked by doopboopdoop 53 Comments

Why are hobbits halflings instead of hobbits?

The books do use the word “halfling” to describe hobbits, and it allowed us to mechanically link them up to other existing cards.

Thoughts? Should Kithkin be Halflings in creature type?

Halflings Versus Kithkin

Can I voice an opinion in favor of halflings over kithkin?

In that you’d rather we have Halflings over Kithkin or make Kithkin the Halfling creature type?

Kithkin and Azra Support

New 02 Aug 2021 Asked by otto-von-bensmarck-blog 47 Comments

If Magic had a history of tribal support for kithkin and azra like it does for goblins, do you think you might have gone the other way on using halfling and tiefling for AFR?

It would have been a factor to consider. I’m skeptical we would though. Using D&D terms in the D&D set has a lot of upside.

Creatures in Conventional Expansions

New 14 Jul 2021 Asked by snescontroller 36 Comments

Can I get an In/When on the following creatures from AFR showing up in a conventional Magic expansion: gnolls, humanoid dragons (with the dragon subtype), gnomes (non-artifact), halflings.

The D&D specific things aren’t going to show up in non-D&D Magic sets. Things like Bard and Ranger should show up though. Non-artifact Gnomes already exist - Quarum Trench Gnomes from Legends, but I could see a new world with them.

Halfling versus Kithkin

New 10 Jul 2021 Asked by oo11 33 Comments

was there any internal debate on using Kithkin in AFR, or was Halfling being introduced always the plan?

Kithkin aren’t a D&D thing, so we had no intention of having them appear in the D&D set.

Halflings and Tieflings in Sets

New 07 Jul 2021 Asked by smuglookingbarrel6 51 Comments

Now that we have actual Halflings and Tieflings in magic, is there going to be a creature type update to make the Kithkin and the Azra (who are halflings and tieflings, respectively), officially halflings and tieflings?

D&D unique creature types will stay in D&D flavored sets.

AFR Typelines Appreciation

New 03 Jul 2021 Asked by theothin 43 Comments

One of my favorite things about AFR so far is the typelines. We've got half-elves, tieflings, halflings, non-artifact gnomes, humanoid dragons, and others doing things they don't usually do like a mono-U Orc Rogue. Really helps make it feel distinctly D&D flavored while still not seeming out of place in MTG.

Flavor bends far easier than mechanics.

Halfling and Kithkin Types

New 24 Jun 2021 Asked by zennistrad 53 Comments

What does "halfling" becoming a supported creature type mean for Kithkin? Will we be seeing a creature type update for kithkin, or will they be separate creature types?

Creature types being in AFR, doesn’t necessarily mean they’re being added to larger Magic.
