Creature Bard Criteria

New 21 Feb 2024 Asked by mslabo102 42 Comments

What makes a creature Bard type? After Crime Novelist and Three Dog, Galaxy News DJ, the definition looks far broader than we saw previously.

I think we’re using Bard sort of like Artist.

What makes a bard red/green?

Red and green are the colors of impulsively living. Many Bards fall in that camp.

Raid Bombardment Reprint

New 23 Dec 2023 Asked by thetitan555 34 Comments

Amateur set designer here: Thoughts on the design of Raid Bombardment? It hasn't been reprinted in a premier set since Rise of the Eldrazi, despite being reprinted in a bonus sheet. I infer that the play pattern isn't toxic but there might be some other part of the card that is, but I'd prefer to hear it from someone more experienced than I. Is there any element of the design that makes it hard to include, or is it just a case of "there's only so many slots"?

It’s the latter. Reprints really have to serve the set, and that design sits in an odd place for synergy.

Creature Type Consideration

New 29 Apr 2023 Asked by asseanontv 32 Comments

Howdy Mark! Out of curiosity was there ever consideration to a creature type "Cook", "Chef" or any variation of? We are introduced to plenty of chefs in a lot planes along with food tokens. We saw Bards become a little more prevalent lately as well.

It’s been talked about, but nothing serious.

Legendary Character Forecasts

Which is more likely to happen first: A new legendary Bard (that isn't Yisan), or a legendary Raccoon?

The former, but the latter could happen.

Bard Trivia

New 31 Jan 2023 Asked by ludosgd 39 Comments

Hiya Mark! A couple days ago was my birthday, do you have any trivia on the Bard creature type? Failing that, some fun fact about Unstable or Unfinity that you'd love to share? Have a nice day! :D

The idea of Bard being a creature type goes back from my early days at Wizards. I suggested Elvish Bard be an Elvish Bard, but two creature types on one creature was still mostly off limits. The reason it usually got shot down is we don’t make enough Bards. I’m happy it finally happened.I’m glad Unfinity got to add two Robot Bards.Happy Birthday!

They rock!

Concern for Keywording Effects

New 03 Feb 2022 Asked by kdubbwads 47 Comments

Hey Mark! :) What keeps any card that has an effect that is identical to an existing keyword (i.e. surveil), being erratad to have that keyword? Once mill was keyworded, every card that did that added it to its text. While I understand why you don't want to bombard new players with non-evergreen keywords, is adding the word "surveil" where the effect is already spelled out problematic? In AFR, one use keywords were implemented and new players seemed to have no issues there. Thanks for your time!

Flavor words are a different animal than keywords in text. You can skip the flavor word and the card has everything you need to understand it. Keywords require adding reminder text for that to be true and start creating assumptions about what’s in the set and what’s mechanically important. With surveil, in particular, we have been having conversations about what effects we do often enough should become deciduous and surveil has been in that discussion.

Legend-Friendly Traits of White

New 20 Oct 2021 Asked by phaenyxx 39 Comments

Expanding on the "whiote is friendly to legends", we also recently had Instrument of the Bards, Ellywik Tumblestrum, Kolvori, Esika (as well as Toralf's hammer), while white only gained search for glory. Are they all bends ?

We’re still exploring the space, but the intent is for white to be primary.

Bard Class Color Pie Issue

New 20 Oct 2021 Asked by danrln 27 Comments

The recent red-green card Bard Class seems to be an exception to the color pie article, which lists white as the primary (and only) color that gets "friendly to legendary permanents". Any comment on that?

We make bends from time to time.

Variety vs Party Support

New 17 Oct 2021 Asked by reginakasteen 49 Comments

To put the structural support party needs in perspective, ZNR has over 90 creatures with the party types, over half the creatures in the set. In contrast, AFR has only 29. So about 60 creatures would've had to be party-supporting types instead of the great variety they actually were. For instance, rangers and bards might not have been able to be included if their slots were taken up by party classes.

Berets in Secret Lair

New 30 Sep 2021 Asked by trumanthegraymerchant 45 Comments

Two other beret possibilities are the Secret Lair Blood Artist and Elvish Bard.

“So, I haven’t had a chance to look in on Blogatog for a while. I wonder what’s the topic of the day? Berets. Hmm, wasn’t expecting that.”Blood Artist - for sureElvish Bard - could be argued both ways

Interpreting Bard Definition

New 21 Aug 2021 Asked by pureferret 36 Comments

I think bard is not general than music. Shakespeare is known as the bard, but wrote plays and poems mainly.

A fine point.

Blood Artist as Bard

New 21 Aug 2021 Asked by sinkingtime 32 Comments

Since we have the Bard type now, and one of them was actually a painter, any chance Blood Artist will be errataed to be a Bard?

You can be a painter and a Bard, but being a painter doesn’t make you a Bard. Bards’ focus is music.

Future Sets Featuring Bards

New 13 Aug 2021 Asked by george-crowstanza 42 Comments

Could we see Bards in future sets, outside of the Forgotten Realms, and in other colors outside of primarily Red/Green?

I do think we’ll see Bards in other sets.

Bards' Color Alignment

New 18 Jul 2021 Asked by rarest-seven 71 Comments

Why were bards put in red-green for AFR? It feels like they should be red-blue, it being the “color pair of creativity”

There’s different ways to interpret Bards. Red/green can be seen as characters who embrace feelings over thought, which is a way some view music, that it’s something to be enjoyed rather than analyzed.

Bard Class and Legendary Spells

New 14 Jul 2021 Asked by goldgaridelve 50 Comments

So Bard Class is Red-Green and cares about legendary, but I know in Dominaria caring about Legendary was a White-Black limited archetype. Can all colors care about Legendary spells, in their own way?

Sure.

Creatures in Conventional Expansions

New 14 Jul 2021 Asked by snescontroller 36 Comments

Can I get an In/When on the following creatures from AFR showing up in a conventional Magic expansion: gnolls, humanoid dragons (with the dragon subtype), gnomes (non-artifact), halflings.

The D&D specific things aren’t going to show up in non-D&D Magic sets. Things like Bard and Ranger should show up though. Non-artifact Gnomes already exist - Quarum Trench Gnomes from Legends, but I could see a new world with them.

AFR Creature Types Future

New 07 Jul 2021 Asked by themartiangeek 62 Comments

Will any of the new creature types from AFR be in regular sets after it?

Bard and Ranger have the best chances.
