Prospects for Insect Tribal Cards

New 25 Jul 2024 Asked by meztere 11 Comments

I once had a Maro dream that we were playing horse shoes, but instead of the horseshoes themselves, it was gigantic centipedes.Maro, what is your opinion on bugs? Can we get some insect tribal toys?

I’m sure we’ll find a world where Insects make sense as a core component.

Riding the Dilu Horse's Design Intent

New 10 Jul 2024 Asked by presidentark 23 Comments

Was Riding the Dilu Horse lacking the "Until end of turn" rider deliberate or not? I'm trying to settle an argument; I'm on the side of "it was a mistake that left in because of the negligible impact of 'fixing' it"; the other party is on side "It was deliberate because it makes it function as a pseudoenchantment, when Portal was intended to lack that type".

I didn’t work on that set, but I believe is was intentional to mimic an enchantment.

Unique Animal Spellcasting

New 04 Jul 2024 Asked by andalon-historian 6 Comments

I just wanted to say that I like how all the Bloomburrow animals have unique bits of spellcasting they can do (otters control currents, squirrels animate bones, lizards do fire). I like it as the thing Magic adds to talking animal stories to make them its own, kinda like there being no horses on Thunder Junction.

Glad you’re enjoying it.

Horsemanship and the Color Pie

New 19 Jun 2024 Asked by sjk9000 4 Comments

As far as color pie is concerned, does Horsemanship occupy a space more similar to Flying or "can't be blocked"? If it showed up as a one-off cameo in a premiere set, could it be on a white card?

It is a flying replacement and is fine in the appropriate colors.

OTJ Mechanics Appreciation

New 10 Jun 2024 Asked by blaze-1013 17 Comments

Gavin put out a video where he talks with Jeremy Geist about OTJ's mechanics and listening made me realize from a pure mechanical standpoint the mechanics in the set, plot and spree, are just two of my favorite mechanics. Past that outlaws are super flavor and just a really cool batch to build around and mounts are an amazing way at capturing the horse back flavor, something Magic hasn't had until now. Honestly, OTJ has one of the strongest collection of mechanics of any set in a long time.

Thanks. I’m quite proud of them.

Horsemanship in Color Pie

New 06 Jun 2024 Asked by chewypudding 18 Comments

We've seen Horsemanship on just a couple of cards since Portal 3 Kingdoms. Where would horsemanship fit into the color pie in 2024? Is it just in blue since it's basically just fancy "can't be blocked?" Or is it in more colors like white since we've seen it on a token made by The Girl in the Fireplace?

It’s treated like flying from a color pie perspective.

Non-canon Cards Labeling

New 23 May 2024 Asked by jimmycomments 5 Comments

Hi Mark - I realise this isn't hugely likely as the horse has already bolted but I think it would be cool if the non-canon cards in supplemental sets were marked in some way, such as with the Planar Chaos frames. I'm guessing this is one of those things that's more complicated than it sounds because it would work across teams or something like that but I think it would be cool.

It’s tricky. Even in Planar Chaos, there is a lot of alternate reality cards not in the timeshifted frame.

Alternate Universe Design

New 23 May 2024 Asked by shyflops 13 Comments

how do you think magic the gathering design philosophy would change in an alternate universe where you're a horse

Oats would play a bigger role.

Horsemanship Cameo Wish

New 02 Apr 2024 Asked by americanlantern 134 Comments

I would like to voice my immense disappointment that there was not a horsemanship cameo in OTJ, I say this before BIG is fully revealed. But I would have loved some random 2/2 with horsemanship and no other text as a cute cameo in the Wild West set.

We tend to cameo cards that play mechanically well over it’s funny to read once.

Unblockable Mechanics

New 31 Mar 2024 Asked by escapingburger 46 Comments

Hello! When you have a "can't be blocked except by creatures with haste" effect as on Resilient Roadrunner, do you balance it as if it made the creature unblockable altogether? Or does it get discounted somewhat since haste is more common than, say, shadow or horsemanship?P.S.: Please distribute high fives for whoever's responsible for Prairie Dog (maybe it's you). I sent an ask maybe a year ago about expanding Magic's squirrel family, so I'm pretty pleased by this one.

It’s treated similar to can’t be blocked.High fives shall be delivered (not to me though).

Card Flavor Query

New 30 Mar 2024 Asked by rebel-ryan 36 Comments

Spoiler Alert!! (in case this gets answered)Hi Mark. I saw the card "smuggler's surprise" today and found myself feeling a little bit of flavor dissonance. This made me wonder if:1. This is a reference in pop culture that went over my head2. If this card was considered for a different set (such as a Pharos one)3. and/or if it happened to just fit this set too well mechanically.

I think it’s just a Trojan Horse reference.

Western Genre Guns

New 29 Mar 2024 Asked by hannah-bot 37 Comments

Is there a specific reason why the designs of the guns in Thunder Junction are so different from the look of historical rifles and revolvers? I get that fully realistic guns with bullets would be out of place in mtg but guns are so integral to the western genera that it feels like watching a western movie where all the horses are inexplicably replaced with camels.

Sort of as if the mounts of the set were mostly not horses? : )We’re doing a Magic world inspired by the western-genre, not an exact copy of it.

Set Horses

The set is not Horseless.

PTK Flying Exception

That is true. I forgot about it.

IP Integration Challenges

New 16 Mar 2024 Asked by sjk9000 49 Comments

Let's say, hypothetically, you guys teamed up with a certain IP to create an UB tent pole product. Said IP is famous for having a fictional species of large birds that people ride around like horses. Some breeds of this bird can fly, but most are flightless, and it isn't obvious by looking at them that they can't fly. Fans of the IP might be expecting them not to fly, but non-fans might get confused by the Bird subtype, leading to play errors. How might you approach resolving the conflict between faithfully portraying the IP vs. ensuring a non-confusing play environment?

If it’s key to a property and the fans would expect them not to fly, I assume they wouldn’t fly.

Horsemanship Cameo Possibility

New 04 Mar 2024 Asked by sjk9000 28 Comments

Is Horsemanship on the table for a cameo mechanic in a premiere set? Like as a one-off flavorful way to make something unblockable?

It’s on the table, but not a high priority. Horsemanship did cameo in Unfinity.

Artifact Vehicle Concept

If. I think there are better ways to do mounts than that.

Artifacts and Intuition

New 18 Jan 2024 Asked by woihtmmd 26 Comments

I don't like that Clues and Vehicles *must* be artifacts. It's not intuitive that a Horse can't be a Vehicle unless it's an artifact. It doesn't make sense that Scene of the Crime is an artifact. Furthermore, it doesn't make sense that a Plant can't be Food unless it's an artifact. While we're at it you should be able to equip nonartifact creatures too, like Banjo and Kazooie. I can't be the only person who thinks this, right?

The rules need to function properly. I get that can be frustrating at times.
