Feedback on Duskmourn Aesthetics

New 29 Jun 2024 Asked by adelightfuldisaster 5 Comments

Hi Mark! Not to pile on about the subject, since it's clear you're getting a lot of comments about it already, but I was wondering if there was a way to give nuanced feedback regarding Duskmourn.

I happen to really love the house of horrors, the surreal geometry, the glimmers of light, the entire haunted aesthetic, and even the basic concept of a house that ate a world. It's amazing, and I hope you give all the people did the work to craft such a uniquely cool place a high five (or verbal equivalent) when you see them!

However, I'm not so much of a fan of the on-the-nose modern tech aesthetic, some of the CRT glitched screens looking really cool aside. Seeing basketball shoes in an in-universe plane is just too mundane for my preferences, and robs the game of some of its, well, magic—all the other tech we've seen has been magi-tech or otherwise unlike what we have on earth.

But these are in the same set! How do I indicate that I love half of it and dislike the other when a purchasing decision indicates only a sentiment about the whole thing?

You can voice it here.

Card Placements: Emrakul vs Squirrels

New 26 Jun 2024 Asked by godkingjinping 5 Comments

Does no one at wotc think it's silly how you can put an emrakul or griselbrand into play turn 1 but making a bunch of squirrels with earthcraft is too far?

I think it’s not far enough. : )

Improv Game Show Prompts

New 02 Jun 2024 Asked by fanfactorpodcast 21 Comments

I am developing a fandom themed improv game show for a local convention. I am having a hard time deciding how the prompts will be selected.
Since you have experience with making this sort of thing how would you go about it?

When making improv games, you just want to figure out how you will craft the improv around the prompt. If the fandom theme is important, I would figure out how to craft many of the prompts around that.

Accepting UB Cards

New 23 Mar 2024 Asked by mrskayathefrog 83 Comments

You said in a recent ask: "[UB] isn't Magic to you. And that's a fine stance. You get to define what Magic is to you. Play with whatever Magic cards you feel embody Magic. But you don't get to define that unilaterally. To many people Universes Beyond cards are Magic."You also compared UB cards to Un-cards, but that is not really a fair comparison.I only have control over my decks, I do not and cannot control what other people put in their decks (which is a good thing!). I can choose not to put UB cards in my deck, but in a tournament my opponent could have a deck with only UB cards and if I was adamant about not playing with them, I'd have to just drop out. Silver boarder cards are different because you do get to choose to participate in a game with them. Before the game, the person who wants to play with silver boarder cards has to ask if the other players are ok with that. That is not the case with UB. You either put up with UB or you don't get to play.

There are many things in Magic that players don’t like, yet encounter in other people’s decks. For example, there are many players who don’t like horror imagery. There are ones than dislike things that pull too far away from fantasy. There are ones that don’t like when cards get too cutesy.Part of playing Magic has always been that you craft the kind of deck you want and your opponent does the same. And if they play things you are unhappy with, that’s part of the communal experience. If you care enough, you can play with people who share your sensibilities. But the idea that a player is protected from the parts of the game they dislike has never been true since the game premiered 31 years ago.

Cautious vs Bold Product Design

New 17 Mar 2024 Asked by mgmegadog 41 Comments

Is there a reason that you were so incredibly cautious with Battles, but seemingly not with Aftermath-style boosters? We've got both BIG and the Assassin's Creed Beyond Boosters coming this year that were clearly designed in that space, only a year on from the original product, and both of them have had to change as a result of how badly Aftermath was received. On the flipside, Battles were loved, and we have to wait 2+ years to see any more of them.

It’s a result of different teams dealing with different facets of the game. Trying to craft a product line is just different than rolling out a new card type.

Mechanic Overload Concern

New 12 Mar 2024 Asked by nunziantimo 41 Comments

Why every set needs to introduce so many new keywords? I believe there are already enough. Stuff like Disguise, Cloak, Collect Evidence, Suspect, are born (and I believe dead) within Murders at Karlov Manor. LCI had Craft, Descend, Discover, Explore. OTJ has Crimes and probably more. I understand that it's fun to draft with new mechanics, but I hate when I am playing any format and have to search online what a specific new mechanic does.

We make new mechanics because players tell us it’s the number one factor of why they buy new sets. Disguise and cloak are just us updating Morph and Manifest, which I do expect us to use again. Collect evidence played well, so I assume it will return. Suspect is the mechanic I’m least sure we’ll use again, but I’ve said that about plenty of mechanics that went on to come back.If an excess of mechanics is frustrating for you, you might want to try a rotating format, like Standard, which greatly limits how many mechanics are available at a time. Non-rotating formats are just going to continually go up in mechanics. It’s their nature.

Universes Within Feedback

New 29 Feb 2024 Asked by aysthere 41 Comments

Where can I voice my official preference for Universes Within? I don't recall seeing any polls or questions in the regular surveys. I try to respond to all of them.Universes Beyond hurts my brain. I don't want to play Gambit, Gambler Ninja when my opponent's Nuclear Shelter enters and gives me 3 Geiger Counters. Particularly after Frodo has been Tempted by the ring but had to chump block a Tyranid King. Frodo died but was exiled instead by the Flying Saucer's Anti-Grav beam. Jace watched, baffled, as Megatron argued with Dr. Malcolm about the insignificance of human life. Please help me. Give me a choice or a voice?

Magic is a game where you craft your own deck. There are over 25,000 cards to choose from that aren’t Universes Beyond. The idea that every mechanical design has to live on an in-universe concepted card is, both, simply not feasible, and not something the vast majority of Magic players feels is a necessity.

Top Mechanics Selection Criteria

New 26 Feb 2024 Asked by blaze-1013 47 Comments

For your top 20 (non-evergreen) mechanics I noticed none were from this decade. What would you say is the best new mechanic from this decade so far?

Note that I would pick the mechanic that started a trend. Foretell is an awesome more recent mechanic, but Morph is the first to use face down as a resource, so I chose that for the talk.Amass, while not technically from this decade, is only five years old. Mechanics I really like from this decade include: alliance, backup, collect evidence, connive, corrupted, decayed, enlist, escape, foretell, incubate, learn/lesson, magecraft, mutate (although it has its complexity issues), party, prototype, reconfigure, role tokens, and shield counters.

Magic Con Etiquette

New 03 Feb 2024 Asked by kidcincinnati 29 Comments

Hey Mark! I’m very excited to be going to Magic Con Chicago with a group of friends and looking forward to the panels. I’m sure you’ve said it before, but are there any best practices if we happen to see you around to say hi to be respectful of your time? As an aside, I’d love to have a copy of whatever you would consider to be your favorite red-white card you designed to get signed (whatever favorite card that might be when you read this).

You can just approach me if you see me, provided I’m not in the middle of doing something. I’m always happy to interact with players. My favorite red/white card is either Comet, Stellar Pup or Pietra, Crafter of Clowns, both from Unfinity.

Crafting-Themed Year

New 01 Feb 2024 Asked by manhackman 36 Comments

The sets so far this year have given us lots of token resources (roles, maps, clues) and graveyard resources (descend, cycling variants) and ways to use them (bargain, craft, collect evidence). Are we in a secret Crafting-themed year-long block? If so, nice job on the cross-set mechanical synergy! I know it’s been a consistent goal of the post-block era.

There is a goal to provide synergies. We’ve found being loud about it (“this is the year of ______”) is harder and have moved away from that.

Praising Limited Environments

New 13 Nov 2023 Asked by dalenthas 47 Comments

I just want to give praise to the whole team for the last couple limited environments. Both WOE and LCI have had a lot of fun moments of discovery where I realized why certain design decisions were made. From a design perspective, Tithing Blade is my favorite card in LCI. It's a normal black removal spell, but instead of being a sorcery like it would be in any other set, it's an artifact. That lets it interact with both Descend and Craft, two of the set's mechanics, in a way that no sorcery ever could. It also has Craft itself, which is a good way to get extra use out of the card in games of Limited that go long. There are similar examples in WOE that are just as cool and deep and I love it!

We spend a lot of time crafting the limited environments, so I’m happy you enjoy them.

Lost Caverns Success Evaluation

New 12 Nov 2023 Asked by rawwkfingers 34 Comments

Would you consider Lost Caverns to be a success in terms of being the first backdrop set (or is it too early to tell?) It seems like the majority of content created and discussion online still revolves around the typal aspects that were present in original Ixalan rather than newer aspects like Craft or Cave

War of the Spark was the first “backdrop” set in the way we define it. I think the reason we use the world is because fans are fan of the world. The set is still built around the underground theme rather than the faction structure of the initial outing.

Positive Set Feedback

New 11 Nov 2023 Asked by deathcloud86 30 Comments

Positive feedback: Just finished the prerelease and Lost Caverns of Ixalan is another home run for limited set. Discover is strong as a fixed Cascade, my games were fun and not too fast so people had time to craft and there are really interesting gameplay decisions to be made. Apply those high fives this is a great and very fun set

Will do! Glad you enjoyed it.

Set Mechanic Inquiry

New 10 Nov 2023 Asked by atomicartificer 28 Comments

I was surprised to learn that LCI has only 3 fewer artifacts than BRO. With Craft being a key set mechanic I suppose it makes sense, but the story and theme really don’t tie to Crafting as being important. To me it almost feels like Craft was first intended for BRO from a thematic standpoint, and Unearth was destined for LCI. Were these two switched at some point?

They were not. The Brothers’ War story involves the brothers digging up old Thran technology.

LCI Spoilers Approval

New 01 Nov 2023 Asked by sjtsquid 29 Comments

As someone who generally dislikes Typal themes, I must say that I'm really pleased with the LCI spoilers.Original Ixalan was probably my least liked recent set, but LCI looks awesome.Craft in particular, looks to be super sweet and interesting.

Glad you’re happy.

Craft Mechanic Query

New 31 Oct 2023 Asked by 22bebo 31 Comments

Hey Mark, I just wanted to say that I like craft as a mechanic, but the wording is really bothering me. Why "Craft with artifact" instead of "Craft with an artifact?"

Templating is not my area of expertise, but I know Magic templating follows its own rules rather than always following the rules of English.

Craft Cards Usability

New 25 Oct 2023 Asked by kiviakin-kiinnostaa 33 Comments

Craft with X cards are really convoluted and the complexity in the set in general seems really high. I bet they are easier to play in digital than in paper. Agree?

I think they are easier in use (in tabletop) than you anticipate.

Caverns Mechanics Synergy

New 24 Oct 2023 Asked by jimharbor 35 Comments

Caverns of Ixalan has Craft a "Graveyard as a resource" mechanic like Flashback & Scavenge and Descend, a "graveyard as a measure" mechanic like threshold and undergrowth. From what I can tell a graveyard had set has always been built around one or the other because the themes clash. Why does Caverns mix the two? Thanks for answering our questions, sir.

Both mechanics work with things that fill your graveyard, so there is some synergy, even if there’s also some tension.

Prelease Experience

New 03 Sep 2023 Asked by trifas 36 Comments

Had a blast playing WOE prelease. I'm always amazed by how you can craft such fun and innovative environments. Finding out the little synergies within the set is very satisfying!

Glad you enjoyed it.

Meta Game Concerns

New 16 Aug 2023 Asked by vargenhk 106 Comments

"As long as you’re not playing in a competitive event, you’re not required to play the strongest version of an effect. [...] A lot of enjoying Magic is playing what personally makes you happy."That's a valid point, but doesn't address the whole issue. In Magic, the cards *I* play with are, at most, only half of the cards in the game. When someone says they want you to stop making so many of X effect, they are asking you to make an environment that encourages their opponents to play cards they enjoy having in their games. Granted, you have a lot more control over the metagame in Limited than you do in a big format like Commander, but I think the concern is still worth addressing.

Magic, by its core design, is about creating a lot of different options to allow players to craft their own experiences. This structures makes it good at making things players want, and bad at removing things players don’t want. Let’s use my buffet metaphor that I like. We find out that there are a significant amount of buffet guests that enjoy seafood. Great, we can add seafood, and increase their happiness because now they can eat seafood. Let’s say we learn there’s another smaller group that hates seafood. There’s not a lot we can do. Removing the seafood makes more people unhappy than happy. All we can do is suggest seafood haters don’t eat the seafood. If they really hate it, maybe they choose to never sit at a table with someone eating seafood.Part of playing Magic is understanding that it’s a large community that enjoys different things. Try to embrace that other people like things you don’t, and that maybe their happiness has value to you.
