Probability of Tutor-Like Commander

New 18 Jul 2024 Asked by trovador240 4 Comments

Hello Marcos. What is the chance that there is a Commander who serves as a tutor to search for a specific card from a previous set?

I’ll say low.

Goreclaw Backstory Reveal

New 13 Jul 2024 Asked by clownstripedcat 10 Comments

Hiya Mark! Today is my birthday, and I would like to invoke birthday trivia please if that is okay! Is there anything you can share about my favorite woman in all of magic, Goreclaw?

Ethan Fleischer, winner of the second Great Designer Search, has a Commander deck based around Bears. I believe he made Goreclaw for that deck. Happy Birthday!

Radiation Counters in Future Sets

New 21 Jun 2024 Asked by hylandude 11 Comments

Hi Mark! I just found your blog and can't seem to find any results with the search so sorry if this has been asked before. Could rad counters show up in a future (non UB) set? I LOVE the design of them and the Fallout set got me into the game so having more pieces for a radiation deck would be amazing.

The mechanical execution can. I’m not sure if they’d have the same name.

Ramp Access Across Colors

Piggybacking off a previous question aren’t all colors allowed to ramp if they search for the basic land they are associated with?

With limitations, yes.

Frequency of Green Land-Fetching

New 09 Jun 2024 Asked by dullwitandravens 15 Comments

It fells odd to me that there are so few effects in green that put lands directly from the deck into your hand. There are lots of things in white that let you search for plains (land tax, gift of estates etc) but verry few green ones. Is searching lands to hand not in pie for green, or is there another reason why we don't see these effects.

We do them fairly often, so much so that R&D has a name for green cards where land fetching goes to hand: Lay of the Land cards.

Rarity Evaluation Changes Since 2018

New 01 Jun 2024 Asked by targetp1ayer 17 Comments

I recently tried my hand at the Great Designer Search 3 Test from your "Make a choice" articles in 2018 and was wondering if some of the answers might be different now in 2024. Specifically, I wanted to ask do you think about rarity differently than you did then? How so? (For reference: the rarity questions were 2, 5, 16, 48, 52, and 55)

You can ask me about a particular question, but you need to list it. I’m trying to answer as many questions as I can. I usually don’t have time to track things down.

Great Designer Search Compilations

Hello! I was wondering if a compilation of designs from any of the Great Designer Searches might exist. Have a lovely holiday tomorrow.

The links to the pages currently don’t work, sadly.

Counting Princess Cards

New 27 May 2024 Asked by zombsidian 5 Comments

Of the over 27,000 Magic cards made, only four have the word Princess in their name. The first Princess Lucrezia came out in Legends back in 1994. Two are from Eldraine, our fairy tale inspired plane: Beloved Princess and The Princess Takes Flight. The final one is the only Universes Beyond card, from The Princess Bride Secret Lair: Buttercup, Provincial Princess.

I don't mean to "Uhm, actually" but don't Princess Twilight Sparkle and Nightmare Moon // Princess Luna also count twoards the Princess name count?

They do. I don’t know why my search didn’t bring them up.

Changeling Search Mechanic

New 19 May 2024 Asked by randomfusilier2 25 Comments

Talk on Kindred cards started my mind back to an old question I had. Was the intention for Kindred Shapeshifter cards with Changeling that any search your deck type card with any creature type search parameter could retrieve them?

Yes.

Lands vs Artifacts

New 07 May 2024 Asked by miztickow 16 Comments

For the colorless mana producing lands vs artifacts, I did a quick search and there are about 345 lands that make colorless mana and about 88 artifacts that make colorless mana.

Regarding Basic Supertype

New 06 May 2024 Asked by zackdes44 1 Comments

If basic has no rules baggage (any number in a deck), why is it needed as a supertype at all? Couldn't the lands currently labeled basic be batched to 'basic', but lose the supertype? Then a term for 'any number' could be used and applied to lands, relentless creatures, etc?

When you search for a basic land, that means something rules wise.

Borborygmos Trivia

New 15 Apr 2024 Asked by cle-guy 47 Comments

I would like to invoke the sacred rite of birthday trivia to ask for any trivia on Borborygmos?

His name is an actual English word which means “a rumbling or gurgling noise made by the movement of fluid and gas in the intestines.”Happy Birthday!

Mechanic Overload Concern

New 12 Mar 2024 Asked by nunziantimo 41 Comments

Why every set needs to introduce so many new keywords? I believe there are already enough. Stuff like Disguise, Cloak, Collect Evidence, Suspect, are born (and I believe dead) within Murders at Karlov Manor. LCI had Craft, Descend, Discover, Explore. OTJ has Crimes and probably more. I understand that it's fun to draft with new mechanics, but I hate when I am playing any format and have to search online what a specific new mechanic does.

We make new mechanics because players tell us it’s the number one factor of why they buy new sets. Disguise and cloak are just us updating Morph and Manifest, which I do expect us to use again. Collect evidence played well, so I assume it will return. Suspect is the mechanic I’m least sure we’ll use again, but I’ve said that about plenty of mechanics that went on to come back.If an excess of mechanics is frustrating for you, you might want to try a rotating format, like Standard, which greatly limits how many mechanics are available at a time. Non-rotating formats are just going to continually go up in mechanics. It’s their nature.

Defining Crime in Magic

New 26 Feb 2024 Asked by flusterfluff 55 Comments

So, if I am understanding Crime correctly. Using Healing Salve to save an opponent's creature is a crime, but bringing down the Wrath of God and destroying all creatures isn't? Spectral Searchlight wouldn't be a crime because it doesn't target, right?

Crime is defined by you targeting an opponent or their “stuff”. Wrath of God - not a crime.

Doctor Creature Type

New 24 Feb 2024 Asked by its-just-arti 35 Comments

Is Arcade Gannon supposed to be a Doctor, not a Cleric?Healers and their ilk have been Clerics up until now, is Doctor going to be a creature type that's just available now? Or will I be allowed to use Twice Upon A Time to search him out, and stuff like that?

We are using the Doctor creature type where flavorfully appropriate. Many Universes Beyond sets that are bit more modern in their setting will use it.

Land Destruction Praise

New 23 Jan 2024 Asked by doesthewormthinkthatsthewayweall 23 Comments

As someone who likes competitively-(at least for tuned-yet-casual EDH pods)-costed land destruction in search of punishing uber-greedy manabases and making mono-colored EDH decks more worthwhile, please give high fives to all involved with Krenko's Buzzcrusher. If there was one decent card like this with a land-interacting effect per set, that'd be the dream.

High fives shall be delivered.

Shuffling Mechanics

New 22 Jan 2024 Asked by aalgot 36 Comments

If/when either make a card that lets us search and then not shuffle or integrate shuffling as part of searching.

I’ve tried to make shuffle an inherent, and unwritten, part of search, but haven’t, as yet, been successful. If, but I hope when.

Plane Naming Reasons

New 11 Jan 2024 Asked by invisiblej15-blog 58 Comments

To the best of my search skills, Thunder Junction is the first full plane whose name is just English words (outside UB). Was there any reason a more fantasy name wasn't chosen?

It’s what the denizens of the plane choose to call it. We do try to name our planes to match the overall flavor of the world.

Secondary Land Search

New 07 Jan 2024 Asked by szwanger 20 Comments

If you had to make one color secondary in "search your library for a basic land of any type," which colour would get it?

I wouldn’t, but if I had to, red, I guess.

hi, I really want to join wotc, mostly game design team, how should I start? I know some pro player were invited to join the game design team, is that the only to join you?

The most common ways to get into Wizards R&D:1) Do well designing another game or games.2) Do well in a Great Designer Search.3) Do well at Pro Tours/high level competitive play.4) Write well about Magic demonstrating you understand how the design works.
