Incubate

Incubate Mechanic Exploration

New 07 Apr 2024 Asked by jozogozo 24 Comments

Would incubate for a different creature type be worded like Amass Orcs is or would it need a new keyword?

It’s possible we could Incubate <creature type>, but that isn’t currently how it works.

Investigate vs Incubate

If investigate was a mistake why did you create incubate?

An incubator token is not an artifact token with the utility of Clues.

Top Mechanics Selection Criteria

New 26 Feb 2024 Asked by blaze-1013 47 Comments

For your top 20 (non-evergreen) mechanics I noticed none were from this decade. What would you say is the best new mechanic from this decade so far?

Note that I would pick the mechanic that started a trend. Foretell is an awesome more recent mechanic, but Morph is the first to use face down as a resource, so I chose that for the talk.Amass, while not technically from this decade, is only five years old. Mechanics I really like from this decade include: alliance, backup, collect evidence, connive, corrupted, decayed, enlist, escape, foretell, incubate, learn/lesson, magecraft, mutate (although it has its complexity issues), party, prototype, reconfigure, role tokens, and shield counters.

Mechanics Reappearance

New 30 Nov 2023 Asked by mois113 38 Comments

Mark, the current single set model has a problem: We get awesome mechanics like incubate, backup and now discover, and then there just aren't enough cards to build decks of or support those in cubes. Would there be ways to have those mechanics reappear sooner?

Cubes don’t have to be singleton. The window for mechanics returning has gotten smaller, but it still is a long time comparatively.

Mechanics With Zero

New 13 Nov 2023 Asked by thunderweb 48 Comments

Can mechanics with numbers have the number zero? (e.g. crew, amass, casualty, incubate, backup, descend, discover, etc.)

It depends on the mechanic. Some can, some can’t (or it wouldn’t practically mean anything).

Incubate Mechanic Future

New 12 Sep 2023 Asked by lykrast 37 Comments

In the future could Incubate get the same treatment as Amass to let you make incubators that hatch into different creature types?

Possibly.

Phyrexian Transformers Speed

New 28 May 2023 Asked by jimharbor 38 Comments

What led you to making the Phyrexian Transformers in MOM sorcery speed as opposed to instant speed like adapt, monstrous and the EMN werewolves.

Playtesting the cards. Note that incubate filled the instant transmutation space.

Creature Tokens Feedback

New 16 May 2023 Asked by prosperity-post 59 Comments

Hey Mark, just giving YOU my opinion and maybe You can do something to work on it. First, you had too many token creators of Angels with vigilance, then you made tokens of Angels w/o vigilance. Through all this, there were other creature tokens in the mix but the Angels really made difficult gameplay. Now, currently, there are too many creature tokens, especially between Incubate tokens and Urabrask;s Forge. Why the latter was allowed is beyond me. Please slow down with the power creep, man.

Are you talking total number seen in the average game or too many different types of creature tokens? Or both? How are others feeling about the current state of creature tokens in the game?

Testing Plane Cards

New 04 May 2023 Asked by mpisanti 54 Comments

On the last Drive to Work, Ethan mentioned balancing Planechase to reduce game times, and I was curious how the Plane cards get playtested (solo, only new, with all the old, etc)? I like to dabble a bit and try to stick somewhat close to your levels. I’m loving the new Planes and I hope the MOM Commander decks sell well and get us more! PS love MOM too, drafted U/R twice and lost, then stomped the table with B/W Incubate.

I went and asked Ethan. Here’s what he said:“In general, we playtested with the all of plane cards mixed together in a single deck, including the new and the reprinted cards. We had a lot of potential reprints to choose from, so it was worth our time to playtest reprints in case some of them weren’t good fits for the product. The single planar deck is how most people play ‘in the wild,’ so we tested that way. If there was a particular plane that we wanted to find out more about we would cheat it to the top few cards of the planar deck.”

Mechanic Return Odds

New 29 Apr 2023 Asked by jml1218 50 Comments

Could we get a set outside of Phyrexian where Incubate and Backup make a return? I love those mechanics.

I too really like both of those mechanics. Backup will be easier than incubate.

Mechanic Reuse Philosophy

New 29 Apr 2023 Asked by dabdabberino 56 Comments

Mark, i love Incubate. I love how it plays, i love the way it interacts with so many little things. But i also fear that we might not see it return for quite some time, since its so thematically tied to Phyrexia. What's your general philosophy when it comes to tying new mechanics to specific parts of the multiverse? What if a new mechanic that was tied to a specific plane lore-wise, became popular and was good enough to become evergreen or deciduous, what would you do?

We’re willing to bring back mechanics and change creature type elements. For example, Living Weapon returned as For Mirrodin!

Incubate Mechanic Return

New 26 Apr 2023 Asked by stickology 46 Comments

I really like Incubate, it's the perfect mechanic for a Katsumasa the animator deck, do you think it might find its way back some set? It seems very phyrexian specific.

Incubate specifically is very Phyrexian, but I could see us do a similar mechanic with a different flavor. I too am a big fan of incubate.

Werewolves in MOTM

New 22 Apr 2023 Asked by summonsequence 42 Comments

Any particular reason we didn’t see any werewolves during March of the Machine? Were there any designed for the set that got cut?

The double-faced cards have specific uses (being Phyrexianized, Praetors, battles, incubate, etc.) in the set, so it wasn’t a good fit.

MOM Limited Play

New 21 Apr 2023 Asked by yuleooze 27 Comments

Hi Mark! I'm really enjoying the limited play for MOM, particularly incubate tokens, and that the multiverse legends sheet adds a "Time Spiral" feel, more in the dozens of one off designs, less the returning characters but both contribute. Please extend knuckles to all those involved.

Will do.

Returning to Recent Plains

New 19 Apr 2023 Asked by rendsphere-blog 57 Comments

Hi Mark,Honest and good faith question:Why the return to more recently plains like eldraine and ixalan? Why would we not return to plains we haven't seen in a while,For example the mid 2010s bunch of Alara or Tarkir?(I also want to thank you for a brilliant prerelease - incubate is a fantastic mechanic and I am already brewing a commander deck for it)

Three-color worlds are trickier. Also, the more successful the original, the easier it is to convince the Powers That Be to return to a world.

MOM Prerelease Feedback

New 17 Apr 2023 Asked by makesasound 21 Comments

I just got home from MOM prerelease, and I want to say how much fun I had. Battles, Incubate and Backup are all loads of fun and the set is full of cool and interesting cards. Seriously, it’s the most fun I’ve ever had in Limited. My single, solitary complaint is that Infected Defector seems like a missed opportunity—Defector Deflector was right there!

Glad you enjoyed it.

Incubate Tokens Query

New 16 Apr 2023 Asked by niuttuc 57 Comments

Had a great time at prerelease! Incubate played better than I expected in practice, though a piece of feedback, many players there were confused with Incubate tokens being able to flip at instant speed when every other "pay-to-transform" card in the set (the Phyrexian mana ones and the praetors) have a sorcery speed restriction. Was that difference conscious?

Yes. They tried incubate tokens at sorcery speed and they played a lot worse.

MOM Set Appreciation

New 16 Apr 2023 Asked by jml1218 41 Comments

Howdy Mark,Initially i was bummed about some stuff that wasnt in MOM (more legendary team ups, granting Backup to creatures, having keywords from other sets that matched the planes creatures came from to name a few) .But the more i look at MOM from a flavor standpoint and the cards, im really loving it more and more (Incubate is becoming a favorite, Backup, spells giving PW abilities, and many more) I can honestly say ONE and MOM are probably my favorite sets since Ikoria. Keep up the great work! Cant wait for Aftermath, high 5's :)

Happy to hear you’re enjoying it.

Prerelease Gratitude

New 15 Apr 2023 Asked by nik-murphy 34 Comments

Hi Mark! I did a prerelease for the first time sins AFR, and had an absolute blast. I achieved my best record in any tournament I’ve been in, 2-1, with my Golgori incubate deck. Thank you so much and please pass along my praise to all those who worked on it, from initial concept to final produce teams!

Will do.

March Mechanics Synergy

New 04 Apr 2023 Asked by obazervazi 74 Comments

I'm really impressed how the mechanics of March all fit together. Backup, Incubate, and Battles feed into counters matter; Incubate, Battles, and corrupted creatures all feed into transform matters; most Backup creatures help defeat Battles; many Backup creatures are knights; red/black sacrifice cards work with artifacts and creatures, so Incubate tokens are always an option; the uncommon signpost battles support each of the other themes... I can see why you're so proud of this set!
