Ubiquitous Tokens Expectation

New 21 Jul 2024 Asked by gcu-sovereign 4 Comments

Is the Ubiquitous Token of a plane something we should expect from visit to visit? Like, how Capenna has its gw citizens, Innistrad has black decayed zombies, LTR had orc armies [applicable to some silmarillion-based visit, I guess]I was looking at the Fish tokens in Bloomburrow and Mercenaries in otj and wondering if those were also more Worldbuilding statements or not.

It’s a mechanical tool that adds flavor, and something we definitely use when shaping a set.

Innistrad Characters Trivia

New 25 May 2024 Asked by jirachibi2550 1 Comments

My birthday is the 25th, but since thats yours too (Happy early birthday!), I'll ask trivia the day before instead. Any trivia on Strefan or Wilhelt? MY favorite Innistrad boys form our last visit?

Willet uses decayed. That ability was original designed by the Crimson Vow vision design team, but got moved up Midnight Hunt because it worked well in that set. Happy Birthday!

Top Mechanics Selection Criteria

New 26 Feb 2024 Asked by blaze-1013 47 Comments

For your top 20 (non-evergreen) mechanics I noticed none were from this decade. What would you say is the best new mechanic from this decade so far?

Note that I would pick the mechanic that started a trend. Foretell is an awesome more recent mechanic, but Morph is the first to use face down as a resource, so I chose that for the talk.Amass, while not technically from this decade, is only five years old. Mechanics I really like from this decade include: alliance, backup, collect evidence, connive, corrupted, decayed, enlist, escape, foretell, incubate, learn/lesson, magecraft, mutate (although it has its complexity issues), party, prototype, reconfigure, role tokens, and shield counters.

Keyword Possibilities

New 23 Jan 2024 Asked by raytyger 24 Comments

Considering more and more tokens (Mites, Fungus) and mechanics (Decayed, Suspect, if we look back Unleash) nowadays are mentioning "can't block" , has R&D discussed making it a keyword like Defender?

“Can’t block” is pretty short, so we wouldn’t save much space.

Token Creatures Blocking

New 01 Sep 2023 Asked by deathcloud86 58 Comments

Why do so many token creatures from recent sets cannot block? Eldraine has rat tokens, all will be one had mites, and midnight hunt had decayed. I want my tokens to interact with my opponent attacks

Both the Zombies from Midnight Hunt and Rats from Wilds of Eldraine want to be swarming aggressive creatures. If we allow them to block, that style of play doesn’t happen, as they’re more efficiently used to chump block. It would also mean we have to charge more for them and make less of them which also leads to less aggressive swarming.

Werewolves Mechanic Suggestion

New 28 Aug 2023 Asked by obazervazi 51 Comments

I feel like maybe you should decouple werewolves from the double-faced implementation. It's best when playing a typal deck feels like that creature type, such as with decayed zombies, and playing werewolves feels like playing accountant typal.

How does Humans that turn into Werewolves not feel like Werewolves?

Token Blocking Mechanics

New 20 Aug 2023 Asked by alkatyn 30 Comments

I've noticed you've used "this creature cannot block" on a lot of tokens recently, presumably this is for the same issues around gumming up the board you talked about with decayed zombies and midnight hunt? If so, was there any thought of reusing decayed (or an equivalent effect with different flavor)?

It’s come up. I assume we’ll use it (although maybe renamed) again.

Black's Purple Graphics

New 21 Aug 2022 Asked by theshunpiker 64 Comments

Why is purple being used to represent black? Some swamps and black cards have purple on them. Also, the streak of black mana is purple instead of black in Arena, even though the black streaks seem to look perfectly fine when used for other things like decayed creatures attacking.

Black doesn’t always work graphically, so purple is a color we let black have access to.

Creature Token Ability Query

New 24 Jan 2022 Asked by thasgar 31 Comments

Can I get a "maybe" that "a new creature token with an ability not seen before on a card" is a return of decayed? Or are you saying that it's never been mentioned on a card, regardless of whether the card actually has the ability or not?

It’s new rules text.

Last Strike Zombie Impact

New 27 Dec 2021 Asked by non-absolute 24 Comments

All the questions about last strike had me wondering... If last strike was possible in black border, would having the decayed zombies having last strike make them weak enough so they wouldn't need their current drawback?

My guess is no, but it is a decent drawback.

Enjoyment of Innistrad Blocks

New 22 Nov 2021 Asked by titania776 51 Comments

The last 2 Innistrad Blocks have not been my favorite magic sets but I have to say I have really enjoyed Midnight Hunt and Crimson Vow! The theming of the Harvesttide Festival and the Vampire Weddings have both been vary enjoyable and the mechanics and themes have been amazing too! My favorite has to be Decayed. It really captures the feel of zombie hordes really well and creates interesting game play. But Blood and The unification of the Day Night flipping has been great as well. I couldn’t have asked more from these sets and just wanted to say thank you for the experiences.

Glad we finally did an Innistrad set you enjoyed. : )

Love of Decayed

New 16 Nov 2021 Asked by embraceourpower 42 Comments

I know it's been a while, but I would again like to express my love of decayed. Can I ask where you think decayed is on the storm scale or any applicable scale?

I’m hoping to find other uses for decayed (maybe with a different name if not on Zombies).

Tapped Zombie Tokens Origin

New 16 Nov 2021 Asked by funnyjoemama 34 Comments

Were all the tapped zombie tokens in Commander Legends a part of the design process of decayed?

They were different solutions for the same issue.

Midnight Hunt and Crimson Vow

New 07 Nov 2021 Asked by okniwy 67 Comments

Someone at my LGS is claiming that Midnight Hunt and Crimson Vow were originally one set, and that it's "obvious when you look at them". I'm pretty sure that's not the case. Design has just gotten way better at designing synergy between sets, right? I'm a little tired of the lack of faith that magic set design is intentional.

They were never one set. The aura version of disturb was originally designed for Midnight Hunt and decayed was originally designed for Crimson Vow, and they were swapped, but that’s the only connection between the two designs.

Card Cost of Blood Tokens

New 06 Nov 2021 Asked by alkatyn 30 Comments

How much value do you give blood tokens when putting together a cards cost, as compared to clues, etc? I remember you saying in your pod about MID that decayed allowed for more tokens by giving them a drawback, were blood tokens similar?

Blood tokens were made to have a slightly lower power level, so we could make more and players would be more willing to feed them to their Vampires.

Carrying Over Mechanics

New 04 Nov 2021 Asked by mynameismichaelkern 29 Comments

It'd be nice to have mechanics just carry over at least. There's interesting stuff that feels like it's thrown away just as there's space to get interesting or use it as a safety valve. Looking at the reception to Dying to Serve, it seems like "Decayed" would have been a better solution than Once Per Turn.

I am looking for more ways to carry mechanics over. I disagree on Dying to Serve. I just think many players overestimate the impact of “once per turn”. Also, if it was usable numerous times and made decayed Zombie tokens, it would have had to cost more.

Opinion on Decayed Tokens

New 01 Nov 2021 Asked by j-waffles 38 Comments

Can I get a storm scale rating for decayed tokens and for decayed on regular cards?

I’d called decayed a 5. I think we’ll see it again.

Decayed Zombie Tokens in Vow

New 29 Oct 2021 Asked by zendikon-sage 62 Comments

Have you confirmed whether or not decayed zombie tokens will return in Crimson Vow?

There are no decayed Zombie tokens in Crimson Vow. Zombies make use of exploit as they’re focused mechanic. I will stress that the two play great together in constructed formats.

Trading Mechanic Query

New 28 Oct 2021 Asked by metallicity 34 Comments

"when Innistrad: Midnight Hunt took the decayed Zombie creature tokens from Innistrad: Crimson Vow, they traded them the Spirit mechanic." Did Spirit have a tribal mechanic besides Disturb at some point (or on cards we haven't seen yet)? This idea of trading mechanics seems odd if both sets were using Disturb, just in different ways.

The original version of the Spirit mechanic for Midnight Hunt was double-faced creature cards that died into auras that granted a similar ability, sort of a re-done haunt using double-faced card technology. Set design ended up turning that into disturb (meaning there was a cost to pay to “cast” the backside) and then realized they could do two versions and it made sense to do the creature/creature version first.

Decayed Mechanic Reception

New 28 Oct 2021 Asked by hiygamer 42 Comments

Are we far enough post Midnight Hunt launch to know how well Decayed was received? If so, how well did it go over with most players?

I think it’s gone over pretty well, but that’s anecdotal. I haven’t seen the actual data yet.
