I like Dominaria United. I really like Enlist from Dominaria United. I like the Storm Scale. What is the Storm Scale for Enlist?

A 5.

Banding Mechanic Future

New 14 Apr 2024 Asked by delicateturtleangel 19 Comments

Hi Mark!Which is more likely?• Functional banding on attack only• Functional banding on defense only?It could be as small as a single card or as big as keyworded mechanic, and exactly banding or simply a cleaner functional way to say either "If any member of the group becomes blocked by a creature, they all become blocked by that creature", or "when blocking a creature with a group, you assign combat damage" l.

The offensive quality of banding was much better gameplay than the defensive quality. I doubt we’ll bring back a functional replacement, but we’ll make inspired mechanics like enlist.

Top Mechanics Selection Criteria

New 26 Feb 2024 Asked by blaze-1013 47 Comments

For your top 20 (non-evergreen) mechanics I noticed none were from this decade. What would you say is the best new mechanic from this decade so far?

Note that I would pick the mechanic that started a trend. Foretell is an awesome more recent mechanic, but Morph is the first to use face down as a resource, so I chose that for the talk.Amass, while not technically from this decade, is only five years old. Mechanics I really like from this decade include: alliance, backup, collect evidence, connive, corrupted, decayed, enlist, escape, foretell, incubate, learn/lesson, magecraft, mutate (although it has its complexity issues), party, prototype, reconfigure, role tokens, and shield counters.

Nod to Banding

New 21 Dec 2023 Asked by dmfmagic 48 Comments

Hello Mark! If/when/already happened: card with an ability that is a very obvious nod to banding for those who know, but won't confuse the general player base?

Already happened. Enlist from Dominaria United was basically a “fixed” banding.

Commander Game Complexity

New 27 Sep 2023 Asked by ambrosehaunt 54 Comments

Is there any concern about the current complexity of Commander games?Cards like Crystalline Giant, Wheel of Misfortune, and dozens of recent legendary creatures with 2 paragraphs of text, as well as relatively complex mechanics used only in a single set (connive, enlist, casualty, training) have lead to some games in which I've spent more time reading than playing. It comes up most often when I play with strangers and against unfamiliar decks. Thanks in advance, and I really admire your dedication to and involvement with the community :)

Formats that use cards from all the sets are inherently complex.

Defensive Mechanics

New 25 May 2023 Asked by telephono 31 Comments

If enlist is a "fixed" banding, it would seem that it is only so on the offensive side of things. What about a fixed defensive banding-like ability?

We’re more encouraged to make the mechanic that helps the game end rather than the one that makes no one want to attack.

If or when: a new version/offshoot of banding that less confusing?

When. Enlist in Dominaria United.

Summoning Sickness Reminder

New 09 Sep 2022 Asked by dolbyzalo 28 Comments

On the question of summoning sickness. It’s shown up often in reminder text — Ashaya, Dryad Arbor, and Life and Limb were the only ones for a while, but the Enlist reminder text features the term also.

So we did need it and did use it.

Summoning Sickness Term

New 09 Sep 2022 Asked by payco 26 Comments

Do you happen to know why summoning sickness has remained an “informal name” for the rule within the CR as opposed to a referenceable term? It’s flavorful and seems useful in an era of vehicles, enlist and beyond.

We might reference it if we had a need to do so in rules text.

Enlist Origin

New 06 Sep 2022 Asked by jaik3n 33 Comments

I have a question about Enlist. Did Enlist get designed as a re-approached/more accessible/understandable banding? It really feels like it did to me, especially with the return to Dominaria and all the nostalgia surrounding it.

Enlist was inspired by banding. A week from Friday, I interview Ian Duke (and Erik Lauer) on my podcast, and he talks about how he made enlist.

Any chance of enlist becoming evergreen?

There’s always a chance. Not a particularly high one right now.

No Legendary Enlisters

New 25 Aug 2022 Asked by exclusionmage 30 Comments

I have to express my disappointment that there are no legends with "enlist" in Dominaria United. I like to see new mechanics get their own commanders, and it would be pretty easy to slap on. Why no legendary enlisters?

Enlist was added in set design, so this is just speculation, but my guess is they didn’t find any designs they liked. We don’t add things just to add them. If we don’t find a design we like, we won’t do something.

Enlist Mechanics Rationale

New 22 Aug 2022 Asked by cleverconvict 41 Comments

Why was Enlist made to be attacking only? I can't see a reason it wouldn't work for blockers from either a rules or flavor sense.

We wanted it to promote offense more than defense.

Banding was a big influence in Enlist’s creation.

Suggestive Topic for Podcast

New 19 Mar 2022 Asked by honor-basquiat 39 Comments

I would like to suggest a topic for a Drive to Work episode: "Unreleased Mechanics" In this episode you would discuss mechanics that have been designed by R&D but have never been released. You could describe how the mechanics worked, who designed them, what set they were intended for, why they weren't released, etc. Examples of mechanics you could talk about include Debt, Stopwatch, Titan, Skirmish, Enlist, Creaturefall and other mechanics you've mentioned and maybe ones we don't know about too!

I’ll add it to the short list.

Sticky Posts Proposal

New 24 Aug 2012 Asked by wafoo2-blog 3 Comments

what would you think of making a list of "sticky" posts that you can repost every 1, 1.5, or 2 weeks with ground rules, suggestions for topics, and in other ways, that which you wish new contributors could become aware of? Next question, do you think you might like an assistance assembling such a "sticky" list? I'll enlist upon request.

I don’t even know how to do “sticky” posts. Could someone explain?
