FYI Atraxa's Fall has "Destroy target artifact, battle, enchantment, or creature with flying."

True.

Battle Removal Colors

New 18 Jul 2024 Asked by elderaktis 10 Comments

"Which color(s) are the main one(s) for battle removal?Red and white usually have slightly more “combat tricks”. Green also always has a Giant Growth like effect that’s good in combat."I think this ask was about removing battles (the card type).

Red has direct damage, which removes battles. We haven’t chosen a color to destroy them.

Primary Colors for Battle Removal

Red and white usually have slightly more “combat tricks”. Green also always has a Giant Growth like effect that’s good in combat.

Noncreature Artifacts as Commanders

New 08 Jul 2024 Asked by jirachibi2550 52 Comments

If/When: A noncreature artifact that can be your commander and If/When: A battle that can be your commander? If i remember correctly, those are the ONLY permanent types that do not have a non creature that can be your commander.

The first has been done. The card has errata allowing it to be your commander.
The second is an if.

Evergreen Status of Battles

New 03 Jul 2024 Asked by j-waffles 12 Comments

Re: “battles aren’t evergreen”Will this always be the case? Like, once we get to fall of 2025 and we potentially start seeing battles again, will they not be evergreen? It seems incredibly strange to me that an entire card type would not be evergreen. Kindred at least has the fact that its existence was a mistake, but battles not being evergreen feels like saying that planeswalkers or artifacts won’t be in every set.

Evergreen means every set wants access to it, and battles simply don’t fit that requirement. Just because things have been a certain way doesn’t mean it always will be. I don’t expect us to design new card types very often, but there’s no obligation that they have to be evergreen if we do. Odds are, by the nature of how card types work, they won’t be.

Presence of Battles in Foundation

New 03 Jul 2024 Asked by jjustin1379 16 Comments

Are there battles in foundation. If battles become evergreen then they should have representation in a corse set. One of the weaknesses of an eternal set is that it has less flux with changing design philosophies

Battles aren’t evergreen.

Concealed Magic Society in Sets

New 30 Jun 2024 Asked by sjk9000 5 Comments

Speaking of urban fantasy, I'd love to see Magic's take on a "masquerade" type world-- where it seems like a non-magical society on the surface, but there are hidden wizard battles going on behind the scenes.

We have an idea that’s similar on the short list.

Transforming Card Colors

New 25 Jun 2024 Asked by fanfactorpodcast 2 Comments

Can a blue battle with U in it's mana cost transform into a card that's not U color identity and do an effect not in blue?

Not something that’s a break in blue. If the back is another color, we treat it like a hybrid design.

Interest in Unvisited Planes

New 25 Jun 2024 Asked by bdiasf 4 Comments

Which unvisited plane on March of the Machine battles most caught your attention for a premier set? (As a personal opinion. I know you can't disclose about Magic's future)

There’s an “unvisited” plane we’re visiting in Tennis (with unvisited meaning it hasn’t be the main setting of a set).

Return of Battles

New 23 Jun 2024 Asked by violet-returned 13 Comments

How long before we see battles again?

Players have liked them. I do expect t us to use them again, but I can’t say when.

Large Library Card Plays

New 22 Jun 2024 Asked by nothingbutland-blog 9 Comments

Do you think there will ever be more cards that play in Battle of Wits space i.e. very large library? Its a big penalty for possibly cool effects, and digital would handle it amazingly.

I think it’s something we want to do exceedingly sparingly.I will say that average deck size in tabeltop is up almost 150% from twenty years ago. : )

Battles as Deciduous Mechanism

New 22 Jun 2024 Asked by marcuswilliams700 3 Comments

Will Battles become deciduous/evergreen or are they more of a thing saved for the big story event sets?

Battles are deciduous. We’re not quite to the sets yet where we got the feedback from March of the Machine that people liked them. Remember we work two years ahead. Also, deciduous means we use them where they make sense.

Product Forcing Pattern Break

New 21 Jun 2024 Asked by aalgot 4 Comments

I believe including both in the same product would have been a mistakeWell then you should have started with non siege battles and then made sieges later.Because the first version of a thing gets considered the default (which it really shouldn’t be in this case science it’s explicitly labeled as not being that by having a sub type but people love to not care about that for some reason)

They’re a default until they’re not. There are many things in Magic history that started one way and then evolved,March of the Machine needed Sieges, so we made Sieges. I get that we more often start with the simpler versions of things, but sometimes product needs force us to break patterns.

Including Non Siege Battles

New 21 Jun 2024 Asked by aalgot 8 Comments

In ONE you should realy have included at least one non siege battle to make the fact that only sieges are defended by opponents and have two sides clear, several people including the YouTuber nikachu (who you shouldn’t check out because he does custom card reviews but is a good example of this) just don’t get it (as proven in any custom card reviews stream where he reviews any of the several non siege battles of different types made by the community)

Normally, we we introduce a new thing we limit how it gets used. For instance, we thought up MDFCs when we first put made TDFCs, but took our time putting it into a product. I believe including both in the same product would have been a mistake.

Concerns on Card Naming

New 21 Jun 2024 Asked by kidcincinnati 5 Comments

Is there any concern to having newly printed cards named things like Bridgeworks Battle when it’s a sorcery and not a battle, long term?

I agree we have to be more careful with the word battle, but Universes Beyond add the difficulty of that being the thing it’s called.

Details About Universes Beyond Products

New 18 Jun 2024 Asked by pop-star-manager-1 1 Comments

So, you said that when you look if a potential property would work as a Universes Beyond product, you look if it has elements that fit all the card types. Does it then mean that it should also have planeswalkers and battles?

Universes Beyond sets don’t use planeswalker cards, and battles are not required.

BR Card's Permanent Destruction

New 12 Jun 2024 Asked by brushaber87-blog 16 Comments

Can a BR card have “destroy target permanent”? I know BG and BW can do it but I’m unsure what holds back BR. Per the 2021 color pie articleCreature - B primary W secondaryEnchantment - W/G primary B secondary Artifact - R/G Primary W secondary Planeswalker - B primary G tertiaryLand - R primary B/G tertiaryBattle - unknownUsing the above BR is the only color combo that doesn’t use a tertiary ability

We like to focus effects in a small number of colors, so just because two colors can destroy any permanent doesn’t necessarily mean we want to make cards in that color combination that do so.

Single-Faced Battles Return

New 31 May 2024 Asked by jozogozo 19 Comments

Is it possible for single sided battles to return first in a supplemental set or in a precon, or do you want them to be in a premier set first?

Single-faced battles could be in a supplemental set.

Non-Player Damage Template

New 30 May 2024 Asked by rowanalpha 51 Comments

Adding Battles as a permanent that can be dealt damage means that very few damage spells that aren’t “any target” can interact with them, and new spells that R&D doesn’t what to hit players won’t either since they don’t want to call out “target creature, planeswalker or battle”. Would we ever see “deal damage to any non-player target” as a way to make these effects compatible without having to call out battle ms or other future damage able permanents?

That’s most likely to happen in sets with Battles. I’m not sure we’re changing the template in all sets until Battles show up at such a rate that it makes sense to change it.

Timeline for Copy Subtypes

New 30 May 2024 Asked by mrpopogod 51 Comments

Now that we have Copy Land that takes a page from Copy Artifact and Copy Enchantment (including remaining an enchantment), how long until we get Copy Creature, Copy Planeswalker, and Copy Battle?

Well, it appears we do one roughly every ten years, on average…
