Untap Symbol and Q

New 24 Jul 2024 Asked by thoughts-of-the-transience 18 Comments

Hi Mark, I was listening to your podcast episode on the alphabet in magic, and you say something along the lines of "I can't quite remember why we used Q for the untap symbol". If you still don't know, could it be that Q in English is almost guaranteed to be followed by a U, which is what you most likely would have used if it was not already used by Uncommon and Blue?

I think it most looked like the circle of the tap symbol.

'Serpent' as an Animal Type

New 23 Jul 2024 Asked by submergedforgottencladogram 12 Comments

Mark, I found your animal mega-batch discussion thrilling and charming, and I am sorry it did not convince others, but I guess I do see the downfall already in the list you gave us: it includes serpent typing as an 'animal', but as a biologist/paleontologist I'm not sure there has ever been a real 'serpent' other than very large snakes...

In normal English is “serpent” not a synonym for “snake”?

Gift Mechanic Wording

New 11 Jul 2024 Asked by khaoskrtr 2 Comments

I also find the wording of Gift a little strange in that it doesn't explicitly define the "cost" like Ward does. "Gift — Create a 1/1 blue Fish creature token," doesn't sound as nice, I suppose. And maybe that's a good enough reason.

We could have written it more in “Magic-speak”, but we preferred making it sound more like normal English. It mechanically works just fine.

Strixhaven College for Creative Writing Major

New 06 Jul 2024 Asked by iheartmeganekko 29 Comments

Hello Mr. Rosewater! It's my birthday today, and I'm hoping you may answer something for me. Which college of Strixhaven would be the home for a creative writing major?I love being creative, so I feel like Prismari might be the right place for me, especially since I mainly tap into red mana. I actually have a Bachelor of Arts in English though, so Silverquill might be more appropriate. What do you think? Would I be able to flex my creativeness with writing in Prismari, or would everything under that specialty go with Silverquill?Thank you, and I hope you're have a nice and festive weekend!

I think creative writing is based in Silverquill with some classes in Prismari.

Black-boarding Silver or Acorn Cards

New 19 Jun 2024 Asked by bobbananaville 4 Comments

Would it be possible to reprint silver-bordered/acorn cards as black-bordered cards in future (assuming they already work within the rules)? Or is there any rule preventing that?

The troublesome issue is the conflict of two standing rules: 1) Any card with the same English name is playable in tournaments.2) Silver-border/acorn cards aren’t tournament legal. Printing a silver-border/acorn card in black border makes us have to break one of those rules.

Life-Changing Game

New 26 May 2024 Asked by singerofw 6 Comments

Happy birthday! It's honestly difficult for me to remember any specific story about Magic, simply because it affected me so much. I have a holistic view on my life (not too dissimilar to yours), so I believe everything I do is connected. It's thanks to Magic that I've met most of my current friends, that I got interested in foreign languages (English is not my native tongue) and got a job translating Japanese specifically (thanks to Kamigawa). I wouldn't be who I am without it, so thank you.

French Translation Praise

New 24 May 2024 Asked by sparkdragon42 9 Comments

Hi Mark,TLDR: love the change to "kindred" on French cards.I want to say that, as a French mainly playing with English cards, I wasn't really thinking anything much of the change from tribal to kindred, mainly because I didn't know the word kindred before, but I just saw a card using the new template in French "[cardtype] de clan: __" (literally: [cardtype] of (the) clan __) instead of "[cardtype] tribal" (it was also the word "tribal" in French) and I think it has so much more flavor of the card being part of the group instead of just being like the group.

I’m glad you like the change.

Silver Bordered Legality

New 19 May 2024 Asked by dwarf-scum 17 Comments

Why would a silver bordered card need a new name to be reprinted into black border formats? Couldn’t you just say the silver bordered printings aren’t tournament legal, like gold bordered cards?

All cards with the same English name are treated the same mechanically.EDIT: As noted in the comments, gold-bordered cards have a different card back.

Nicol Bolas's Abilities

New 19 May 2024 Asked by ennosytallo-blog 31 Comments

Sorry for my english (is not my mother language) I've waited so long for this birthday trivia and i want to ask you: Nicol bolas is my favorite magic character of all times, love him. In the Nicol bolas, planeswalker card. since BR is a guild that easily can destroy any creature, why his first ability can't destroy a creature?

It is to differentiate it from the second ability. The first ability deals with noncreatures and the second deals with creatures.Happy Birthday!

Misspelled Card Ruling

New 05 May 2024 Asked by zbaschtian 23 Comments

Does the misspelled Secret Lair Doom Blade count as a crime (for rules purposes, not against the English language)? "I am not targeting, I am targeeting."

It’s still a crime. All cards with the same English name has the same Oracle text.

Creature Type Considerations

New 03 May 2024 Asked by pontemosca 21 Comments

People call lions and tigers “cats”. Hi Maro, how do you consider multiple languages when making this arguments internally? (I am pro a creature type unifer, be it feline or cat)

It’s mostly dictated by English.

Choice of Card Names

New 28 Apr 2024 Asked by nareas-duondir 55 Comments

hi mark!i love every pun i can find in magic cards :Dbut it got me wondering: do you sometimes considwr other languages while naming cards? So a card, thats a pun in german but just "a normal name" in english.

Normally when we make a pun in English, the translators love stepping up and find a pun in their language. And yes, sometimes they’ll find puns for cards that aren’t puns in English. We can’t design to foreign puns as card naming happens after the design is completed.

Rathi Assassin Reprints

New 27 Apr 2024 Asked by strodeviking 44 Comments

Hey Mark, so I recently discovered that Rathi Assassin has had its creature type errated quite a bit over the years. So I went ahead and made a mockup proxy of its official typeline despite how small the text had to be. Would Wizards ever attempt to print a card with this many creature types? Or does this mean Rathi Assassin will never get a physical reprint since its type has been only technically and digitally updated by errata over the years?

There are numerous factors. Type line restrictions vary depending on what languages the card needs to be printed in. We can go a bit smaller on cards only printed in English. There are also some solutions that might involve rules text.

Borborygmos Trivia

New 15 Apr 2024 Asked by cle-guy 47 Comments

I would like to invoke the sacred rite of birthday trivia to ask for any trivia on Borborygmos?

His name is an actual English word which means “a rumbling or gurgling noise made by the movement of fluid and gas in the intestines.”Happy Birthday!

Kellan's Future Appearances

New 14 Apr 2024 Asked by junesouko 105 Comments

Hello, mark.(My native language is Japanese. I use machine translation. I may be using incorrect English.)
I've been buying MTG since "Wilds of Eldraine". I like Kellan. I liked how he got closer to the people he met on his journey and how he changed his clothes. I heard that Kellan's journey ends with "OUTLAWS OF THUNDER JUNCTION". Will we be able to meet Kellan again? I want to see more of him.
I'm not very sociable so I'm not good at card games. MTG is great because you can enjoy the beautiful pictures and story. I'm grateful to all the people involved. Thank you.

I think we’ll see Kellan again.

Translating Punny Names

New 31 Mar 2024 Asked by jarethbulge 147 Comments

Hey Maro! I don't have beef with the punny card names, they give me a chuckle and I like when the tone of magic varies a little. I am curious if you can comment on how they get translated, though- Holy Cow seems like a distinctly English phrase, and even concepts like a Red Herring or a Private Eye probably don't have one-for-one equivalencies in other languages. I know it's not your department, but do you know how they tackle this problem?

The translations usually look for humor that makes more sense in that language. They’re usually not direct translations.

UB Mix and Match

New 23 Mar 2024 Asked by jimmycomments 48 Comments

Hi Mark - since Universes Beyond has come up again as a topic, I want to share something I think is really fun about it. Some English words are obviously evocative and are going to be used in various settings, and as an example of that we have cards for the Master from Doctor Who and the Master from Fallout. There are cards with Brotherhood in the name from Fallout, and I assume there's a chance of us getting them in Marvel, too. There's an Ancient One in Lost Caverns of Ixalan, and I imagine there's a chance of us getting a Marvel one in the future. Putting these in decks together is something that brings me pleasure that wouldn't have existed before UB, even if my Fallout Brotherhood/Marvel Brotherhood team-up might be vulnerable to Brotherhood's End from the Brother's War!

Mixing and matching can be a lot of fun.

Soul Enervation Query

New 26 Jan 2024 Asked by ruready2fall 34 Comments

I'm not good at English, sorry.
Question about Soul Enervation. This reminds me Flametongue Kavu from twenty years ago.I play him, my opponent Repulse his only one creature, then FtK dealt damage to himself. Why Soul Enervation doesn't say like "up to one target ~" or "~ creature an opponent controls"?

We like that black cards occasionally hurt you. It feels very in color.

Plane Naming Reasons

New 11 Jan 2024 Asked by invisiblej15-blog 58 Comments

To the best of my search skills, Thunder Junction is the first full plane whose name is just English words (outside UB). Was there any reason a more fantasy name wasn't chosen?

It’s what the denizens of the plane choose to call it. We do try to name our planes to match the overall flavor of the world.

Cluedo Edition Language

Question: any reason why the cluedo edition will only be available in english?

In order to print in a certain language, we have to meet a certain threshold of expected sales.
