Possibility of 'Artifactfall'

New 19 Jul 2024 Asked by lazcarno 4 Comments

"Is "Artifactfall" something realistic to expect considering how many Treasures, Clues and Food makers exist these days?" "It would have to take artifact token making into account." It seems to me that, regardless of how aggressively or unagressively you costed it, the "smart" way to play such an effect would be using tokens rather than actual artifact cards, since they're cheaper. Correct me if I'm wrong. Assuming I'm right, wouldn't it be better if the mechanic specified "non-token?"

We did Alliance and didn’t feel the need to say nontoken, and we make more creature tokens than artifact tokens.

Ranking CreatureFall Ability

New 26 Jun 2024 Asked by fanfactorpodcast 8 Comments

Where did alliance aka CreatureFall rank? I feel it was one of the more forgetful ability words.

People liked it, but weren’t passionate about it. It’s the classic 7 out of 10.

Garruk's Future Plans

New 12 Apr 2024 Asked by edvaldofelixleal 42 Comments

Mark, is Garruk in on some plan that we'll see soon? It would be interesting for an alliance between Garruk and Liliana to investigate what Jace is up to... 🤔🤔🤔

I believe we’ll see Garruk again.

UB Full Sets Ideas

New 01 Mar 2024 Asked by clumsynotdrunk 23 Comments

UB Wishlist!
Full sets / commander:Warcraft: such a depth of lore and characters to mechanically build out into magic, enough material to creatively support multiple sets IMO. Such as Horde vs Alliance, Burning Legion’s invasion(s), Light vs Void, General fantasy adventure shenanigans not already covered by dnd, etcNaruto: would result in some oddball designs that I think could be super fun, plus being to tap into the anime market is always nice. Star Wars: it’s Star Wars and it’s amazing. The Last of Us: ticks both the “prestige TV” and “AAA video game” boxes while also melding magic with one of the most emotionally powerful properties in recent memory. Secret Lair:The Simpsons: having cards to pair with your color article about each family member’s color would be the best.Buffy the Vampire Slayer: fun nostalgia vibes and also so I can see the creature type “Slayer.”

Thanks.

Top Mechanics Selection Criteria

New 26 Feb 2024 Asked by blaze-1013 47 Comments

For your top 20 (non-evergreen) mechanics I noticed none were from this decade. What would you say is the best new mechanic from this decade so far?

Note that I would pick the mechanic that started a trend. Foretell is an awesome more recent mechanic, but Morph is the first to use face down as a resource, so I chose that for the talk.Amass, while not technically from this decade, is only five years old. Mechanics I really like from this decade include: alliance, backup, collect evidence, connive, corrupted, decayed, enlist, escape, foretell, incubate, learn/lesson, magecraft, mutate (although it has its complexity issues), party, prototype, reconfigure, role tokens, and shield counters.

Naming Mechanisms

New 26 Aug 2023 Asked by ilgreven 59 Comments

Re: "Artifactfall": There's much more precedent to not name it that than there is. After all, "enchantmentfall" is called Constellation and "creaturefall" is called Alliance.

Good point.

Alliance Mechanic Future

Hey Mark, where does Alliance sit on the storm scale? I really enjoyed it and would love to see it again :)

It’s a 4. I expect to see it again.

Artifactfall Possibility

After Landfall, Alliance, and Constellation, when or if for an ability worded "artifactfall"?

When. It’ll happen.

Mechanic Keywords

New 27 Sep 2022 Asked by chefwhatnot 23 Comments

On one of the Trivia Contest Attraction variants: what all fits in the category of “named mechanics”? Would things like Alliance and Pack Tactics count? Or keyword abilities like reach or double strike?

Keywords and ability words all count.

Defining Vigilance

New 16 Aug 2022 Asked by mooseontheloose2 36 Comments

"Vigilance is not an ability word. It's a keyword."Ability words are italicized right? So like, Landfall and Alliance and Ally, yes?

Yes.

Does WOTC consider Samut Gruul or Naya-aligned?

She’s red/green.

Multiple Mechanics Possibility

New 07 May 2022 Asked by kurosaki289 31 Comments

Can we have a set were each faction have 2 mechanics instead of one, for example alliance and convoke in the same faction, or evolution and graft, this kinda happened in the tarkir block and i think it would be cool if it happened again.

But it didn’t happen concurrently. We would need multiple sets to do it.

Old Keyword Mechanic Modifications

New 04 May 2022 Asked by admiralsmash-blog 22 Comments

When you cut a keyworded mechanic like Smuggle or the "two creatures enter the battlefield" version of Alliance, how often do the old designs stick around in a slightly modified or keyword-spelled-out form?

It varies. It has to do with how much gameplay that variant enables.

Potential Deciduous Mechanics

Out of the 5 family mechanics, which do you believe has the highest chance of becoming deciduous?

Shield or alliance.

Ape Trivia

New 30 Dec 2019 Asked by graymerchantsmonomyth 24 Comments

May I please have some birthday trivia on apes in Magic?

For a long time all Simians were creature type Ape, but a few years ago we added Monkey. All the playtest cards in Alliances, by the way, had the word “Monkey” in the title. They were rebelling against the story having sentient gorillas in it. Happy Birthday!

White's Card Drawing Potential

New 21 Dec 2019 Asked by anarresurras 41 Comments

Is white allowed to give card draw to another player, instead of all? giving cards to players that are really ahead in commander can be problematic, but making alliances can be really useful!

It’s something we could explore.

Allies Visual Identity

New 10 Dec 2019 Asked by fruhni 27 Comments

On the topic of a visual identity for allies: Would it be possible to give them some kind of banner or logo (à la rebel alliance). A watermark would be ideal to highlight them, but it could also show up on card arts.

Locking it in art is tricky because then it prevents play design from adding or subtracting the Ally creature type as a means to strengthen or weaken cards and balance play environments.

Fairytale Tropes Missed

New 21 Nov 2019 Asked by sylvhem 32 Comments

Mark, in your latest article, you said that “star-crossed lovers” was one of the fairy tales trope that, sadly, did not make it in Throne of Eldraine. But isn't Run Away Together a take on that trope?

One could argue it is. It also plays into the “unlikely alliance” trope.

High Fives Request

New 30 Sep 2019 Asked by naifuneko 41 Comments

I know your hands are red and blistered at this point, but could i get one last round of high fives for the team? I was able to play with the Draw 2 deck today at the prerelease after opening 3 Improbable Alliance, and this is the first time ive ever enjoyed a non constructed format so much. Truly just an awesome expirience.

Sure. Ow. Ow.

Definition of Politics

New 23 Jun 2019 Asked by arandomstringofcharacters 47 Comments

"I’m just not a big fan of politics in my Magic." I'm not sure what Commander has can be called "politics". With most players there are no alliances, no favor trading, and no grudges. There are just people you have to take out sooner, people you'd prefer to tackle later, and people who offer a rolling stream of symmetric effect benefits that make them more useful alive than dead (until you realize their mostly unmolested board is unassailable). It's not politics, just multiplayer competition.

Multiplayer competition *is* politics. Decisions are influenced by what people say to one another. That’s what “politics” in gaming means.
