Dream About Designer's House

New 23 Jul 2024 Asked by banksyguythrowingthings 8 Comments

Hi Mark, sorry if weird but last night I dreamed I was a guest in your house. It was a little awkward but you were very nice. Outside your kitchen window there were some very aggro squirrels. Just thought you might like to know (or maybe not, but here we are).

I’m glad I was a good dream host. I’ll keep an eye out for dream squirrels.

Reprinting text-less full art

New 19 Jul 2024 Asked by brendo 4 Comments

Hey Mark, could cards be reprinted as text less full arts with the same art they already had? I just saw Campbell White's art for the elemental incarnation cycle in the MH3 special guests for the first time, and think that it actually gets hurt by the text box blocking a bit of it, and think it would be really cool if versions with just the art could exist.

It depends on the art ratio.

Bloomburrow Toski's Status

New 16 Jul 2024 Asked by wulframofthedas 10 Comments

Can you confirm that the Bloomburrow Toski isn't canon? I know the Imagine:Critters cards aren't generally, but he's a special guest so I'm not entirely clear if that still apllies. (If I sent a similar message before, apologies for the mistake)

I don’t think the critter cards are canon.

Creating Fun in Deck Design

New 01 Jul 2024 Asked by xansor 7 Comments

Just a friendly reminder, you had mentioned that you would put this on your list, and I am just following up on it: a podcast episode with a possible guest focused on how to build/design "fun" decks, and how "fun" is measured/quantified.
The reason I think this is important is because your team is uniquely qualified in being able to try and calculate "fun". Your products have to be fun and somehow you have to calculate and quantify fun even though it is subjective.
This is really hard for the average person. For example a person may have an idea of what is fun for them but not what is fun for everybody, or at least what is fun for the statistical majority of people.
As commander gets more and more popular, I think the topic of what is "fun", not only to play but also to play against, is an important conversation that is hard for the average person to put into words and/or quantify.

I have already recorded the fun podcast, talking about how we design to make things fun. It doesn’t have a release date yet, but I assume some time in later July or early August.

Drive to Work Audio Quality

New 03 Jun 2024 Asked by delightfullyeducationall 18 Comments

Not so much a question as a wish... your solo episodes of Drive to Work are typically very good. But your guest episodes often suffer from a lack of quality audio setup and editing. I get the impression you're doing it all yourself, which is...fine... But there has to be someone at Wizards who could make a few quick adjustments to up the overall audio quality. The recent MH3 episode sounds like you just have a mic sitting over someone on speaker phone. It's hard to listen to.

Erik’s interview had some specific audio challenges that are very atypical.

Energy Economy Podcast

New 24 May 2024 Asked by keresacheron 3 Comments

Can you do a podcast/article on the energy economy and that changes that befell it in MH3?

I would probably need a guest, but I can add it to the list.

Playtesting vs Normal Formats

New 05 May 2024 Asked by drsnap23 6 Comments

Do you only play limited, or do you have some go-to decks for other formats too ?

Most of my Magic play is through work and that is mostly limited. I do build decks with new mechanics for playtesting, but that’s very removed from playing normal formats. Most of my Commander play is playing with guests at Wizards, and that usually uses preconstructed Commander decks.

Planning Fun Deck Episode

New 03 May 2024 Asked by xansor 23 Comments

Hello! I'm hoping you could plan an episode including a guest about what makes a deck fun and how to build fun decks!

I can add that to the list.

Fun vs Optimal Deck Design

New 27 Apr 2024 Asked by xansor 33 Comments

Hey Mark, I started off as a modern player and later converted to commander. I REALLY like building decks. I find myself starting to build MANY decks but never finishing them. I used to try and optimize every deck until I realized that doing it that way was actually less fun. I have now discovered that it is MORE DIFFICULT to design a deck to be fun that it is to simply optimize it. Based on your podcasts, I know fun has a lot to do with variance, epic comebacks, and other stuff as well. I would like to learn more on how to design a deck that is more fun!

It might be best to get a guest to do this topic in a podcast. My heavy Johnny deck building days are a bit behind me.

Sealed Play Enjoyment

New 13 Apr 2024 Asked by cthulhusaurusrex 39 Comments

Hey Mark, just got back from a prerelease (my first prerelease since Dominaria!) and I had a great time. I really enjoyed the spree cards in sealed, I love the way the deserts that deal 1 to target opponent worked as mana fixing off of cards that searched for them (Spinewoods Armadillo especially, that card was super fin) and count for committing a crime, commit a crime itself made for some interesting deck building decisions, and mounts were a nice way to unstick boards full of creatures.I was even sceptical about all the extra cards filling slots (big score, special guests, and breaking news), but I found that it was exciting to see old cards that I think fondly of (I got to see murder, voidslime, etc. and I found that the designs look much better to me in person than it did as spoilers) as well as pull some fun new cards from the big score. Overall I think the set felt great to play with in sealed and I had an awesome time, high fives all around!

High fives shall be applied. I’m happy you had such a good time.

Outlaws Spoilers Feedback

New 02 Apr 2024 Asked by blaze-1013 47 Comments

I just want to say I'm really happy with how the Outlaws of Thunder Junction product line spoilers have been done. Having each part of the product line, Special Guests, Main Set, Breaking News, The Big Score, and the Commander decks their own largely self contained time to be shown made everything really focused. My one point of feedback is commander decks probably should have had two days instead of BIG. Four full decks is a LOT of information to dump in a single day and is better over two imo.

I’ll pass that note along.

Masters Sets Replacement

New 31 Mar 2024 Asked by rottinghellkite 39 Comments

Do Special Guest cards lower our chances of getting anymore Masters sets? And if they do, will they replace Masters sets entirely?

I think Master sets have pretty much been replaced by other things. I don’t currently anticipate any more.EDIT: Oops. I misread that as masterpiece like we did for Kaladesh and Amonkhet. Sorry for the confusion. I was talking about masterpiece sets.

Gavin's Party Excitement

New 30 Mar 2024 Asked by thekingofpho 81 Comments

It's birthday trivia time, and I would like some trivia on my birthday twin, Gavin Verhey.

Here’s a sweet story about Gavin. Every year, I throw a holiday party at my house (our annual Holiday Cookie Party). I live at the top of a pretty big hill. The first year Gavin started at Wizards, he came to the party. At the end of the party, Gavin thanks me and says he has to go. Realizing he didn’t come with anyone, and knowing he didn’t (at the time) have a car, I said, “Gavin, how did you get here?”“I took the bus,” he says. The bus drops off at the bottom of the hill, which is, as a said above, pretty far away. “You walked here from the bus?!” “Yeah, I was excited to be invited. I didn’t want to miss it.” We made sure Gavin got a ride home from one of the guests.Happy Birthday!

I could look into it.

Feedback Shaped Designs

New 26 Mar 2024 Asked by doopboopdoop 15 Comments

Could you ever do a DTW and discuss how particular feedback shaped the design of a set? Like what legends were decided in Outlaws

I’ll need to bring on a guest. Most legendary creatures aren’t known during vision design.

Set Name Podcast

New 16 Mar 2024 Asked by zozocracked 19 Comments

Is there enough content for a podcast about how sets get their names?

Maybe. The person who does the names, Ari Zirulnik, has been a guest on my show before. I could have him back on.

Imagine Showcase Clarification

New 29 Feb 2024 Asked by gevth 47 Comments

(Pssst, the official announcement of Bloomburrow states that Jace and other characters that may appear on Bloomburrow as animals are part of the “Imagine: Courageous Critters” showcase. So the official answer should be something along the lines of “they are just fun showcase art :)” )(Your answer “As we get closer to Bloomburrow’s release, we’ll be able to answer this question.” implies they may be part of the story or part of a bonus sheet or, most likely, part of the Special Guests or The List cards)(I’m writing with parenthesis so that other blogatog readers can’t see what I’m whispering)

The List Transformation

New 24 Feb 2024 Asked by charliechitty 35 Comments

Really a little confused by the transformation of The List over time. With 50,000+ odd cards in the game it makes sense to have more reprint equity in sets. So every set has a swathe of historical cards you can get. I understand that. Then it gets reduced from 300 to a few and called Special Guests. Now it's The Vault and it's only brand new cards. So we've gone from The List giving players access to older and more fringe cards from common to rare to essentially a new rarer-than-mythic set of chase cards. These seem to be two different and contradictory directions, right?

Outlaws of Thunder Junction is using the List differently than most sets because it’s absorbing what was originally going to be a different product (a la March of the Machine Aftermath). This is not a permanent change. The List will normally be using reprints.

Rarity Categorization Issues

New 31 Dec 2023 Asked by dusqofrakdos 29 Comments

I'm not personally hung up on cards caring about rarity, but as far as caring about the cards being the same across printings, the types for many creatures have been updated in their oracle text and we follow the most recent oracle information. Could that be an option for caring about rarity as well? It could go by the most recent oracle rarity.

That’s a giant can of worms for three big reasons:1) It’s hard to track/remember. And it doesn’t have things like art cues to help.2) It could causes frequent change in functionality. Creature types at most change once, and there aren’t lots of cards that care about a specific creature type outside of handful of popular creature types, ones we don’t tend to change. 3) Deciding what to count for “last printing” could be tricky. Any version including digital? Just tabletop printings? Does it have to be main set? Do The List and Special Guest printings count? How about Commander decks where rarity isn’t even based on rarity? How about Secret Lairs?

Futureshifted Cards Request

New 12 Nov 2023 Asked by moonfolklore 24 Comments

Hi Mark! I'd like to request more thematic futureshifted cards as special guests. With Play Boosters, this would still affect limited, but maybe at an ok frequency.

I’m not quite sure what you’re asking for.
