Complexity in Bloomburrow

New 11 Jul 2024 Asked by shahrathestoryteller 13 Comments

Hi Mark. I love Bloomburrow's design from veteran perspective! It's such a novel way to do a 10 color pair faction set. However, from a new player's perspective, I hope it won't be too overwhelming since the mechanics so far spoiled include Landfall, Storm, Flashback, Threshold, Gift, Offspring, Expend, Prowess, Forage, Food/Treasure, Valiant, 10 Typal themes, Pawprints, and Classes. Was there concern about complexity creep or do you think the 10 typal motif will facilitate learning the mechanics in the set (I'm not sure what you would call this phenomenon where, counterintuitively, adding more complexity simplifies cognitive processing, like adding hyphens to phone numbers)?

Most of the mechanics are put into a specific animal two-color pair, so you don’t end up playing the majority of these mechanics together. They are also on the simpler end of the spectrum.

Artifact-Related Issues in Bloomburrow

New 10 Jul 2024 Asked by polluxr 27 Comments

I was checking out the previews for Bloomburrow and people were raising concerns about Ygra turning every creature into an artifact creature (since Foods are inherently artifacts). Someone raised the point that those tokens (Clues, Treasure, Food, Maps, Blood Junk, etc) could have been given a unique type to avoid unwanted artifact-related issues. Was that ever considered/discussed?(loving the cards so far and I already love "Hop/bounce" as a mechanic for frogs and foraging for squirrels! Also looking forward to the pay/gain life for bats since Orzhov is my favorite pair. My compliments to the chefs! Great cooking!)

We consider artifact synergy a feature, not a bug.

Comparing Junk Tokens Utility

If/when a way to cast half a spell just like treasure creation acts like drawing half a card.

Junk tokens from Fallout are sort of in that ballpark.

Duskmourne's Aesthetic Critiques

New 29 Jun 2024 Asked by j-waffles 1 Comments

Hi mark. There were a few people who had commented on the technology and aesthetic of Duskmourne and how it feels too close to the present, referencing planes like Capenna or Neo-kamigawa as other examples of modernity in Magic’s fantasy setting. Because I am the main character and my opinion is the most important one, I thought I’d give my two cents on the topic.Although kamigawa and capenna are obviously more “modern” than a plane like innistrad, they still don’t feel like “now”. By definition, sci-fi is not modern. Although Neon kamigawa doesn’t feel like high fantasy, it doesn’t feel “modern” to me either, it’s too far in the future. In the opposite direction, Capenna feels too far in the past to feel “modern”. Yeah, arc spitter is a Tommy gun and the treasure token is a martini glass, but it still doesn’t feel like the present. My grandpa wasn’t even born until after the end of prohibition. Time period Capenna is based on was literally a century ago. Sure the aesthetic isn’t as far back in history as the aesthetic of a knight in shining armor, but it’s still far enough back that it feels like “another time”, at least to me. I think the reason those two planes pass the vibe check is because they feel different enough from modern day. TV’s have existed since the late 1920’s, so it would have been historically accurate if the plane themed around 1920s America had TVs. but that still *feeeeeels* wrong. The vibes are off. Yeah sci fi japan would probably have cell phones or something, but that just feels wrong. In other words, fantasy (to me) isn’t about looking like lord of the rings, it’s about NOT looking like everyday life. This is where Duskmourne comes in. I wasn’t alive in the 70’s or 80’s. Heck, I’m so young that my parents hadn’t even met until after homelands came out. But the 70’s and 80’s feels like modern day. Screaming nemesis and cursed recording have TVs in their art. The booster fun frame looks like it would be on a ghostbusters poster. I feel like I saw my baby cousin wearing the exact same outfit as Toby just the other day. The term “fear of missing out” is just such a modern day thing, even if that concept isn’t new. I’m withholding my judgement until I see the whole set, but based on what we’ve seen so far, I (somewhat) agree with the sentiment a lot of Duskmourne feels too “real”. I’m sure more detail will be given closer to release, but I would be really interested in learning the whole process of how y’all built this world, even more interested than I would be with any other plane.

We’re trying something new. Some people seem to like it, some don’t. Time will show whether it was overall a good idea. I will say we need time to better gauge it. There are a lot of very popular Magic things that had an initial negative opinion.

Artifact Token Types

New 25 Jun 2024 Asked by zombsidian 3 Comments

I like the design of Food creatures and Clue creatures, but Goldhound is the only Treasure card. What's the likelihood of other token types becoming Artifact Creature cards? IE Gold, Junk, Incubator, Blood, ect

If an artifact token gets used in a set, we’ll look for opportunities for it to be used on a card.

Connecting Through Magic

New 26 May 2024 Asked by gring-mushroomspores 1 Comments

Happy birthday and greetings from Europe!!Personal Magic story here: A while back, I introduced a friend to the game. A few friends and I sat down to teach them the rules and we drafted some Mystery Boosters. They then started drafting and playing Magic locally where they lived. They started a little discord server with more people, and I've met many new friends in that manner, people I hold dear. They in turn also introduced some people to Magic. One of these people I would later meet when we met to play a round of commander. And they would eventually become my girlfriend! And still are! So yeah I'd say Magic has been a part of some very important times in my life. I connect through it with some of my oldest and closest friends. Thank you for everything you do for the game and by extension, us players! You truly are a treasure, Mark.

Thanks, and I liked your story.

Cubing Rediscovery

New 25 May 2024 Asked by pleaseburger 6 Comments

Happy birthday, Mark!I rediscovered Magic during Kamigawa Neon Dynasty after not touching it since my childhood (around Lorwyn block). I tried almost every gamemode on Arena, as well as some EDH, but nothing quite captured the essence of Magic like drafting a cube for the first time.Since then, I've made five (!) cubes, and crafting & managing them has become one of my treasured hobbies. Making my own environments has made the game extremely fair and accessible for my less enfranchised friends, and it scratches the itches of my designer brain.Thank you for being such a big part of the game I love to tinker with!

Glad you found the expression you enjoy most.

Token Keyword Actions

New 23 May 2024 Asked by kingmacrophage 11 Comments

On a scale of 1 to 10 how likely is it that Food and Treasure tokens get keyword actions down the line? I think I'd name them Cook and Score respectively.

I’d say a 2. We consider them not having one an upgrade.

They’re seafaring thieves.

Token Variety Feedback

New 05 May 2024 Asked by frakkedorfiction 12 Comments

I have some dissenting feedback on the tokens - I enjoy the variety of obscure tokens in packs and would be disappointed if the Big Score tokens didn't appear in the set. I feel like in some sets you never see the interesting tokens because all that gets opened is soldiers and treasure

How do others feel on the token issue?

Token Diversity Limits

New 05 May 2024 Asked by selein 23 Comments

I had a great time drafting OTJ last night! I noticed, after opening an entire box, there are a LOT of different tokens. My first thought was how they do an excellent job of increasing design space and contribute to overall worldbuilding. Unfortunately we didn't open any Mercenary tokens and only 1 treasure – the two most needed tokens in the set. Comparatively, we got 3 sheep, angels, gnomes, 5 food, & 4 Elk among others. I point this out because I think token diversity is a budget to consider.

It is. We do have set limits.

Treasures in Black Mechanic

New 01 May 2024 Asked by synchrai 19 Comments

Are treasures considered a tertiary mechanic in black?

Yes. Black has some limited ability to make treasure, but it’s supposed to come with paying an additional, non-mana cost.

Unhinged Event Memory

New 24 Apr 2024 Asked by pitaenigma 44 Comments

I stopped playing mtg a long time ago (life got in the way and I never got back around) but one of my all time most treasured MTG memories is the Unhinged release event. I opened three copies of Farewell to Arms. At a certain point the organizer of the event started following me with a camera because he could reliably get good photos of people getting creative with how to hold cards handless.

Cool story. Thanks for sharing.

Token Language Evolution

New 17 Apr 2024 Asked by nightfiremelody 23 Comments

Hello, Mark! Do you think it's possible we'll ever see a non-Acorn card "create" something other than a token? If not, do you think we'd ever see the word "token" implied, so as to save space on the card? For example, "Create a Treasure," or "Create a 1/1 white Human Soldier creature."

I’m skeptical we’ll stop labeling tokens. I don’t know if we’ll ever make another noncard component, but we might.

Outlaws Plot Complexity

New 12 Apr 2024 Asked by aceofmoxes 30 Comments

Outlaws of Thunder doesn't seem all that villainous. Where's the complex plot to take over the multiverse? These guys are just going treasure hunting.

You need to play with the plot mechanic. It can get complex. : )

Treasure Tokens vs Mana

New 12 Apr 2024 Asked by luvkraft 34 Comments

Sometimes users who play other card games mention land accidents in Magic, and I see the beauty of the game in covering this uncertainty with deckbuilding and playing. (It could even allow a beginner just starting out to beat a pro player.)In the current Magic, I have the impression that the treasure tokens are able to follow up against mana screws, but seeing that more and more of them are coming out tapped these days, I wonder if it is still difficult to adjust this area? (I think it is necessary to avoid land accidents, and it is also important to avoid excessive mana acceleration.)

Treasure entering tapped is a play balance tool. Getting the right balance with mana is tricky, but important.

Noncreature Token Populate

New 07 Apr 2024 Asked by honor-basquiat 42 Comments

Hello Mark,

What would you say the chances are of an eventual mechanic similar to Populate but that would instead work for noncreature tokens? Or perhaps even a mechanic that would let you propagate creature tokens AND noncreature tokens.

I'm asking because Populate was originally created 12 years ago and there are a lot more noncreature tokens nowadays (i.e. Treasures, Foods, Maps, Clues, Blood) so it would be neat if there was a mechanic that copied or cloned those types of token permanents.

There are always chances.

Clues vs. Other Tokens

New 07 Apr 2024 Asked by zombsidian 32 Comments

To continue off of the Clue discussion, why were Clues tied to a keyword when their sister token artifacts (Food, Treasure) weren't?

It came first. Often when you do something for the first time, it’s not done the way you eventually figure out how best to do something.

Luxurious Locomotive Restriction

New 29 Mar 2024 Asked by luckylooter 35 Comments

Hello Mark! Can you explain why Luxurious Locomotive has the "Crew only once each turn" restriction?

So you don’t crew it with every creature you have and create a huge amount of Treasure.EDIT: It seems I might not have the right answer. I’ll ask.
