Planescase and Dr. Who Review

New 12 Jul 2024 Asked by gridnack 3 Comments

I like Planeschase but dislike Dr. Who. Mechanically, the Dr. Who product added some fun and interesting cards, but I skipped it because of the IP. How well did it do and is there a chance of getting more in-universe Planeschase?

The feedback on March of the Machine Commander decks and the Doctor Who Commander didn’t have the planechase element listed as high points of the set for players.

Artifact-Related Issues in Bloomburrow

New 10 Jul 2024 Asked by polluxr 27 Comments

I was checking out the previews for Bloomburrow and people were raising concerns about Ygra turning every creature into an artifact creature (since Foods are inherently artifacts). Someone raised the point that those tokens (Clues, Treasure, Food, Maps, Blood Junk, etc) could have been given a unique type to avoid unwanted artifact-related issues. Was that ever considered/discussed?(loving the cards so far and I already love "Hop/bounce" as a mechanic for frogs and foraging for squirrels! Also looking forward to the pay/gain life for bats since Orzhov is my favorite pair. My compliments to the chefs! Great cooking!)

We consider artifact synergy a feature, not a bug.

Reprints of Older Cards

New 03 Jul 2024 Asked by diazepam666 13 Comments

In recent years, Plainchase and Arch Enemy have reappeared, which is very exciting.
I hope you can figure out a new way to offer us those cards from the past.

Are you talking about reprinting old Planechase and Archenemy cards?

Friendship Rekindled

New 25 May 2024 Asked by jtfr96 7 Comments

I definitely have a feel good MTG story. I was a military brat growing up and so was always on the move. I was taught to play MTG while in high school in Germany with original Innistrad and in turn taught all my friends there. The friend group drifted apart as we moved and got older, but then Covid hit and playing magic online became the norm. Me and these old friends from high school all started playing magic together online in that time, and it managed to bring the entire friend group back together. People that hadn't played since high school started joining in, and it's now a weekly tradition to hop online and play commander together despite being spread out all over the country, and brought the friend group back together together even though many of us haven't seen each other in person in 12 years.
Thank you so much for giving us this wonderful game that has kept our group together, and have a happy birthday! You deserve it!

Thanks for sharing your story.

Archenemy Set Probability

What are the chances we'll see another Archenemy set?

We recently did Planechase, so there’s always a chance.

Ravnica Legalities

New 27 Feb 2024 Asked by aceofmoxes 36 Comments

If I'm playing planechase on a Ravnica plane, and I cast murder on my opponent's enemy of the guildpact, that wouldn't be a crime, right? (murdering the guildless is legal on Ravnica)

Murder is targeted, so casting it on an opponent’s creature is committing a crime. By the way, it’s not legal to kill the guildless.

Future Planechase Products

Just curious, I loved the return of planechase and wondering if we are going to get any more planechase cards?

I think we will one day.

Multiplayer Innovation

New 16 Jan 2024 Asked by hodorkotb 28 Comments

If/when another "multiplayer innovation" product a la Planechase/Archenemy? With Commander being the most popular format I think it'd be fun to experiment with different ways to shake up the gameplay.Introducing an optional new gameplay variant with one Commander product a year might be a fun way to try different things.

It’s happening right now. That’s what the Clue product is. It’s a multiplayer innovation product.

Vanguard Program Details

New 06 Jan 2024 Asked by futuristicenemydonut 34 Comments

Wait, Vanguard cards were an in-store promotion? I always thought it was a separate product like Planechase. Can you tell us something more about Vanguard?

I believe the program was called Arena then (this was before Magic: The Gathering: Arena existed). If you signed up to play in it, you got that seasons cards, eight in all, for free. You chose one to build a deck around and played with other people in the program.Vanguard was never a for-sale product.

Planechase Matters Color

New 03 Jan 2024 Asked by baron-von-lucas 21 Comments

Re: A hypothetical planeschase matters planeswalker card. Where is "Planechase matters" in the color pie?

Probably any color could get away with it. The first place I’d consider is blue.

New Dice Type Proposal

Hi MarkIf/when: introducing a new type of die to roll (like the Planechase die with unique symbols/meanings - not a normal numbered D6/D20, etc)Thanks!

If.

Planeswalker and Planechase

New 02 Jan 2024 Asked by hyralc 55 Comments

re an earlier question (what they probably menat). If/when a planeswalker card that interacts with the planechase planeswalking mechanic? Like the dice rolling or the chaos or plane effect or whatever

Oh, I missed that. I would imagine a Planechase product would be the one to do it, if any one did.

Planechase Frequency

New 29 Oct 2023 Asked by jimmycomments 61 Comments

Hi Mark - I just wanted to say, as someone who uses the planechase cards basically every game, the every now and again approach is perfect. We had a lot of new planes this year, which is brilliant, but I don't think I'd want the same number every year. It's nice to form feelings and reactions to them so we can think "Oh no, Tember City!" etc. Having said that, I don't feel that about non-plane cards, and I know other people do, so obviously this is just my opinion.

Good to hear your take. Planechase is definitely an infrequent thing.

If.

Planechase Product Coincidence

New 19 Oct 2023 Asked by tybonel13 35 Comments

It's is interesting to me that after seven years of not getting any Planechase products that we got two separate sets of commander decks with planes in the same year. Is this just a coincidence with planes being thematic for both sets, or is it part of some sort of push for more Planechase stuff?

More coincidence. We just had to products where it made sense flavorfully.

Archenemy Commander Set Potential

It’s a possibility.

Possible Planechase Reprint

New 19 Oct 2023 Asked by jirachibi2550 25 Comments

If/When: Reprinting the planechase cards as a box set you can again. Basically Planechase Anthology 2?

If, but I recognize there is an audience that likes Planechase, but joined Magic long after those were on sale.

It doesn’t hurt.

Doctor Who and Planechase

New 19 Oct 2023 Asked by modstin 28 Comments

Doctor Who including Planechase cards makes me wonder... were they brought back as a test for the market to see if players were interested in more Planechase cards? (Disclaimer: I Am Very Interested In More Planechase) I'm not asking "Are there going to be more Planechase soon" I know that's not really answerable, just if that was part of the intent in their inclusion in the WHO UB

They were included more because it fit the flavor of the show, but any product with planechase cards doing well helps increase the chance of future planechase cards.

Planar Die Interaction

New 18 Oct 2023 Asked by suigenyukiouji 27 Comments

I love planechase and Doctor Who, and thus plan to make a First Doctor and Susan deck as such. Question: does Vedalken Squirrel-Whacker interact with the planar die at all? It doesn't specify numbers (I know cards that say "ignore the lowest" and such ignore planar die rolls), but I can only assume it won't allow you to "store" a planeswalk symbol or a chaos symbol as its power or toughness. (though, in an acorn game, maybe it could?)

From the Unfinity FAQ: If an ability triggers “whenever you roll a die,” it will trigger whenever you roll any die, including the planar die. This is a change from previous Un- rules. Some abilities use the result to determine part of the effect. If you get a non-numerical result (currently just the planar die, but the future is long), that part of the effect won’t do anything. What this means is rolling a planar die for Vedalken Squirrel-Whacker won’t do anything as it has no numbers.
