Excitement for Bloomburrow

New 24 Jul 2024 Asked by kwain-itinerant-meddler 1 Comments

Wazzzaaaaap, Mark da Shark,Just wanted to send kudos and share my excitement about so much of Bloomburrow! It's gonna be my first prerelease in a long while, since M20, I think, as well as there's so many things to love about it. I've been a big fan of Doug Beyer since Kaladesh, glad he was the lead designer on this set. Also super pumped to be getting both a revisit to the Heroic mechanic in Valiant, one of my favorite mechanics from Theros, and the amount of rabbit typal support. My Cadira commander deck is gonna go through a major redesign when the set is properly out. Hope you have a lovely day!

I’m glad you’re so excited. I can’t wait to hear all the prerelease stories.

Creature Type Expectations

New 23 Jul 2024 Asked by sjk9000 7 Comments

Do you worry that Bloomburrow archetypes might create player expectations for a specific mechanical identity for each creature type? For example, players might be dissapointed that future frogs don't play into bouncing/flickering, or that future mice don't synergize with valiant.

That’s not how other creature types work, even ones that have had dedicated typal themes.

Bloomburrow's Equipment Situation

New 21 Jul 2024 Asked by lookingupanddown 3 Comments

Did Bloomburrow ever have more Equipment that it does right now? Between Blacksmith's Talent and the Valiant mechanic, I'd imagine it would be easier to drop a few more Equipment in the set for increased synergy.

The set had a lot to fit in. There’s a good chance set design tried a larger as-fan of equipment at some point.

Success of Valiant Versus Heroic

New 18 Jul 2024 Asked by cle-guy 5 Comments

If Valiant is successful are we less likely to see Heroic?

Probably. I think valiant plays better than heroic.

Repetition of Successful Mechanics

I absolutely love the Offspring and Valiant mechanics from Bloomburrow! What is the chance we see these effects again in other sets?

Success breeds repetition.

Enthusiasm for Bloomburrow Set

New 16 Jul 2024 Asked by rosyfacedlovebird 2 Comments

hi Mark! i just want to say that i’m more excited for Bloomburrow than i’ve ever been for a Magic set, and i’ve been a fan for a long time! the creative direction and story are both slam dunks for me, but i expected that. what i did NOT expect was to be equally as excited about the set’s mechanics, but Valiant, Offspring, the duo cycle, and the pawprint/seasons cycle all seem EXTREMELY fun to play with. i just wanted to share my joy and excitement!!

I’m happy you’re happy.

Future Set's Heroic Rework

New 11 Jul 2024 Asked by bassimelwakil 9 Comments

FYI on May 16th I asked that given how disguise reworks morph and the dev issues with heroic, what would you consider changing to rework heroic. You replied “there is an upcoming set that answers that very question”. I presumed you were referring to a Marvel set, but qanadhar left a comment certain it was Bloomburrow. Just some of the fun foreshadowing of Blogatog. :)(I presume there’s an article or podcast that explains the rework soon?)

Next week’s article talks about the mechanics. Short version: heroic looked into allowing abilities, but there existed things you could repeatedly activate for 0, so we left it off. Valiant added abilities back in to help it trigger more, and used the once a turn restriction to deal with the problem interactions.

Understanding Heroic Versus Valiant

New 11 Jul 2024 Asked by blazinjsin 15 Comments

What made you guys nerf Heroic into Valiant instead of just using Heroic?

Valiant is better in most cases than heroic. No nerfing. Triggering off of abilities is a big upgrade.

Perceived Valiant Weakness Explained

New 11 Jul 2024 Asked by lylethebloody 8 Comments

Valiant feels pretty bad when Heroic exists.... I'd rather have an ability with a little less punch that I get every time.

Valiant will trigger more times per game than heroic in most decks.

Complexity in Bloomburrow

New 11 Jul 2024 Asked by shahrathestoryteller 13 Comments

Hi Mark. I love Bloomburrow's design from veteran perspective! It's such a novel way to do a 10 color pair faction set. However, from a new player's perspective, I hope it won't be too overwhelming since the mechanics so far spoiled include Landfall, Storm, Flashback, Threshold, Gift, Offspring, Expend, Prowess, Forage, Food/Treasure, Valiant, 10 Typal themes, Pawprints, and Classes. Was there concern about complexity creep or do you think the 10 typal motif will facilitate learning the mechanics in the set (I'm not sure what you would call this phenomenon where, counterintuitively, adding more complexity simplifies cognitive processing, like adding hyphens to phone numbers)?

Most of the mechanics are put into a specific animal two-color pair, so you don’t end up playing the majority of these mechanics together. They are also on the simpler end of the spectrum.

Exclusive Mechanics Question

New 10 Jul 2024 Asked by su92 27 Comments

We've seen very few cards as of yet, but are the following mechanics exclusive to their faction: Valiant (Mice), Thresold (Rats), Expend (Racoons), Forage (Squirrels)? Or can we expect to see at least a little of (some of) them in more colors?

Those four mechanics are unique to one animal archetype.

Soldier Type Focus

New 24 Aug 2022 Asked by apo08 43 Comments

Were other commonly white creatures types considered for Valiant Veteran instead of soldier?

Soldiers is actually a creature type that hasn’t been getting a lot of love over the last bunch of years, and we’ve gotten a lot of request for more “Soliders matters” cards.

Interaction of More or Less

New 12 Jul 2021 Asked by mattgmueller 24 Comments

How does More or Less interact with cards like Valiant Effort if we make it roll three D6? Thank you.

I assume you mean Valiant Endeavor. You choose one die for the first effect and then choose a different die for the second effect.

List of Left-Handed Walkers

New 24 Apr 2020 Asked by zacharyporterblr 39 Comments

Re: Left handed walkers the following are all shown using there left hand while there right is unoccupied Ajani: Steadfast, mentor of heroes, and valiant protector Domri, city smasher Garruk: Wildspeaker, and primal hunter Kiora, behemoth beckoned Nahiri, lithomancer Nissa Revane Ob-nixilis, hate twisted Sarkhan, dragon soul Vraska, scheming Gorgon Most of these also have "right handed" art and of this list scheming Gorgon is the only one shown in action. NOTE: this list is non-comprehensive.

Thanks for compiling the info.

Valiant Changeling Cost

New 28 May 2019 Asked by chocolatechipmarshmallowpizza 39 Comments

Why does Valiant Changling have the cap of 5 for its cost reduction when it costs 5WW?

Because you can only reduce the generic mana part and that’s 5.

Comic Book Preferences

New 15 Feb 2019 Asked by purpledge69 26 Comments

Hi MaRo! As a comic book guy, which do you or did you lean more towards? Marvel or DC? Image maybe? Or Valiant?

I read more Marvel than any other publisher, but I’ve bed. A regular reader of titles from a lot of different publishers.

Birthday and Musical Tale

New 28 Jan 2018 Asked by aguilamagica 140 Comments

Fun fact: today is mine and Mozart's birthday! Any trivia about Magic and music? Or failing that any awesome trivia about you, Mark?

Here’s a story about my musical ability. I was once in a musical as a chorus member. I auditioned with the song “High Hopes” and surprisingly was one of just a handful of people to get cast. During the many rehearsals, the musical director tried valiantly to improve my singing. Just before the show opened, he took me aside and said that he thought from my audition that I had potential as a singer, but it turns out I didn’t. He then told me it would be okay if I just mouthed the words. Happy Birthday!

Crows in Parking Lot

New 08 Jan 2017 Asked by burningled 121 Comments

I've just heard that there are hundreds of crows who valiantly guard the WotC parking lot every morning. Is this true?

They’re more often there in the evening. And there are a *lot* of crows. Kind of scary actually.

Terminology Persistence

New 19 Jun 2015 Asked by gainsbanding 45 Comments

You tried valiantly to stop it, Maro, but I think "flip card" has come to mean "double-faced card." As a lover of language and not fighting human nature, you should appreciate this. Now what do we call the Kamigawa flip cards?

I will not give up the fight. “Flip cards” are the Kamigawa cards.

Interest in Kamigawa

New 03 Nov 2013 Asked by rhinotmetos-deactivated20180404 6 Comments

I was a history major in college, so few things in Magic interest me more than Magic's history; and for whatever reason, I am endlessly fascinated by the Kamigawa block (I think because it was a valiant misstep). Ever consider casting a few more pods about the subject, perhaps touching on Betrayers and Saviors?

I will get there eventually.
