As a raccoon lover and Junk lover, may I request a legendary raccoon that cares about Junk tokens.

Perhaps one day.

Raccoons and Junk Tokens

Were junk tokens considered for raccons? I think they would have been fun

They were not. Raccoons digging in trash is more about then living in a world with Humans.

Bloomburrow's Play from Exile

New 10 Jul 2024 Asked by lykrast 4 Comments

With the few "play from exile" cards we've seen and raccoon being associated with trash, were Junk tokens considered for bloomburrow?

Not that I know of. Green doesn’t do impulsive draw.

Artifact-Related Issues in Bloomburrow

New 10 Jul 2024 Asked by polluxr 27 Comments

I was checking out the previews for Bloomburrow and people were raising concerns about Ygra turning every creature into an artifact creature (since Foods are inherently artifacts). Someone raised the point that those tokens (Clues, Treasure, Food, Maps, Blood Junk, etc) could have been given a unique type to avoid unwanted artifact-related issues. Was that ever considered/discussed?(loving the cards so far and I already love "Hop/bounce" as a mechanic for frogs and foraging for squirrels! Also looking forward to the pay/gain life for bats since Orzhov is my favorite pair. My compliments to the chefs! Great cooking!)

We consider artifact synergy a feature, not a bug.

Future of Junk Tokens

New 08 Jul 2024 Asked by cannonspectacle 10 Comments

I really love the Junk tokens from Fallout, how likely are we to get more support for them in the future?

I could see us using them again in the right set. I’m not sure they’ll be called junk tokens.

Comparing Junk Tokens Utility

If/when a way to cast half a spell just like treasure creation acts like drawing half a card.

Junk tokens from Fallout are sort of in that ballpark.

Artifact Token Types

New 25 Jun 2024 Asked by zombsidian 3 Comments

I like the design of Food creatures and Clue creatures, but Goldhound is the only Treasure card. What's the likelihood of other token types becoming Artifact Creature cards? IE Gold, Junk, Incubator, Blood, ect

If an artifact token gets used in a set, we’ll look for opportunities for it to be used on a card.

Silo Problem Discussion

New 18 May 2024 Asked by yuleooze 26 Comments

Hi Mark! Some pushback on the 'silo problem' you outlined in your Typal talk: my first draft was Lorwyn and those silo cards really gave me an on-ramp to understanding what the archetypes were and the concept of archetypes as a whole. I think they have their uses and shouldnt be wholesale junked as inflexible ne'er do well slot wasters.

There’s nothing wrong with having typal (or other linear) themes. Players like them, and yes, they’re good for beginners. The “silo problem” doesn’t say not to have typal themes, but rather you have to design them in such a way that multiple drafters are interested in the same cards or every draft plays out identical where drafting a specific theme always gets you the same deck.

Rad Counters Usage

New 06 Mar 2024 Asked by rottinghellkite 43 Comments

Are rad counters and junk tokens things we could see outside of a Fallout UB product?

Any mechanic/counter/token we make in one product is fair game for other products. For some Universes Beyond things, it might require a different name.

Artifact Tokens Design

New 22 Feb 2024 Asked by polluxr 30 Comments

On the subject of artifact tokens (Junk seems great and flavorful and I'm also hoping to see it used again in the future), do you think Map tokens could have been allowed instant speed activations? I understand there's some play design reluctance when it comes to "on-board tricks", but how much different is it from knowing a revealed card in hand or any other activatable ability on board? Plus there are already some cards that allow Explore at instant speed and players are used to clues/food/treasure at this point...

They did explore it in design, and didn’t like how it played. It forces you to always play as if it is a +1/+1 counter.

Fortifications Power Level

New 22 Feb 2024 Asked by sombramainexe 27 Comments

Also super excited that fortifications returned, but was it made intentionally safe? 3 mana and 3 to fortify would have to be very good to be playable and I feel a +1/+1 counter and a junk every turn isn't super compelling and that's best case.

The Fallout cards were made to be relevant in Commander. Power level isn’t my area, so I can’t comment on how strong the card is.

Junk Tokens in Standard

New 21 Feb 2024 Asked by vedney 25 Comments

When/If Junk tokens in Standard?

If. A world needs both need for the functionality of the token and have the flavor work well.

Junk Tokens Possibility

New 21 Feb 2024 Asked by zanthr 27 Comments

apologies if this has been asked already, but do you think Junk tokens might be printed into a premiere set if the tone is right? I'd love to see a card with Junk Treasure as its subtypes along the lines of Candy Trail

It exists as a possibility with the right world.

Token Power Differential

New 05 Nov 2023 Asked by followingthemagic 41 Comments

I find the balance of two very similar ideas but particularly powerful tokens revealed recently odd. Junk tokens are free “card advantage” at sorcery speed, while map tokens are pay 1 and not guaranteed card advantage also at sorcery speed. Is there a reason/ thoughts as to the power differential here, one costing mana and seemingly less powerful vs no mana and more? Commander focused design or does the potential +1/+1 counter play a lot into it?

They are in different sets with different goals and needs.

Return of Junk Tokens

Hi Maro! If Junk tokens are well received, could we see them return in other releases?

Sure.

Function of Junk Tokens

New 20 Oct 2023 Asked by mois113 33 Comments

Flavor question: Why does a junk token let you impulse draw?

I assume you’re taking junk and building new things out of it. Any Fallout fans want to give a more in-game explanation?

Fallout Cards Impression

New 19 Oct 2023 Asked by trainmastergt 38 Comments

Hi Mark,I just wanted to say that I am impressed by the Fallout cards so far. I love both Junk tokens and the Rads mechanic. Dr. Who felt like a bit of a misstep for the UB series from a design perspective, but Fallout seems pretty great so far. I am excited to see the rest of the set! Please keep up the excellent work!

I’m glad you’re enjoying it.I should point out that Doctor Who design has a lot of fans on this blog.

We did.

Introducing the Junkyard Zone

New 20 Oct 2022 Asked by anyguy 28 Comments

In Unfinity, why did you introduce the Junkyard as a zone, if nothing interacts with it, couldn't you have defined, that attractions go to exile when destroyed or sacrificed?

They go in the discard pile of the deck, so we named that. We like decks having their own discard pile.
