Changing Set Design Skeletons

New 14 Jul 2024 Asked by pantswithoutlegholes 4 Comments

listening to one of the recent limited resources (hi marshall and lsv!) where they discuss the set skeleton. i agree with them that the skeleton has made a huge improvement on the baseline for sets but also that it sometimes feels a bit obvious. i'm curious if you think you will ever develop alternative skeletons that are also proven to work but lend a different feeling? i could see a world where you start a set and decide to use the "tricky skeleton" or the "stompy skeleton" over the basic one.

All skeletons shift as the set evolves, so there is difference set to set. Larger picture, the consistency is about having familiarity for both the audience, so it feels like a Magic set, and for us, as it allows us to better use experience to balance things. I’m not worried that the most hardcore enfranchised can see some of the structure.

Lack of Evasive Creatures

New 11 Jul 2024 Asked by natew000 6 Comments

In the Fallen Empires DTW (which I loved by the way), you mention that Fallen Empires had almost no flying or other evasion. Do you think that might have been the result of building the set “too top down,” meaning they had great ideas about the factions and simply forgot to include evasive creatures because the factions they came up with were all land and sea armies? This feels like a good lesson that could be useful to anyone designing a set without a design skeleton.

The East Coast Playtesters just weren’t super fond of flying. Most their sets had a smaller percentage of fliers than average (at the time).

Commander for Skeletons in Duskmourn

New 30 Jun 2024 Asked by nackyll 10 Comments

Hey there Mark, Bloomburrow is looking like another great set giving lesser developed tribes some love. Do you think the upcoming Duskmourne set might be giving skeletons a proper Commander finally? They are really lagging behind for being such an iconic tribe.

There are definitely some creature types getting some love in Duskmourn. I can’t reveal which ones yet, but they do flavorfully make sense.

Shifting Creature Types for Different Planes

New 13 Jun 2024 Asked by suigenyukiouji 10 Comments

If or when: a plane where the usual creature types are shuffled around a bit, but still fit their new colors? Ex. goblins on this plane are more civilized and selfless than average and are in White, merfolk swim in lava and live in volcanoes and are Red, undeath is seen as a natural part of the cycle of life thus zombies and animated skeletons are in Green, etc.

Designing for the eternal world, especially Commander, complicates this. Because we’re trying hard to connect with themes of the past, it becomes hard to add new cards to a theme, but specifically put them in a different color(s) than they originally appeared in. We do like to stretch creature types to new colors, but usually associated with a color that has some history to it.

Future for Creature Groupings

New 12 Jun 2024 Asked by polarisfluff 15 Comments

Are we going to see more mechanics for groupings of creature types like outlaws in the future? Like maybe fighters (Knights, soldiers, warriors, archers) or critters (rabbits, squirrels, rats, mice, etc) or undead (zombies skeletons vampires spirits)? Where does it sit on the storm scale?

There will be more batching. We do want to be careful how often and how intuitive the groupings are.

Evoke Creatures in Design Skeleton

New 04 Jun 2024 Asked by andalon-historian 18 Comments

Does your article from today mean that evoke creatures count as instants and sorceries in the design skeleton?

The fact that they can be creatures means you count them as creatures from a design skeleton standpoint.

More Skeleton Token Enchantments

I think I love these enchantments that create skeleton tokens. Skeletal Swarming, Corpses of the Lost, and Case of the Stashed Skeleton. May I request more?

Sure.

Resources for Set Design

New 02 Jun 2024 Asked by tstroh777 19 Comments

I've been brainstorming an idea for a set I'd like to design. Besides the set skeleton and color pie articles, what other articles and resources would be useful in designing?

My “Nuts & Bolts” series will be the most helpful.

Innistrad Monsters Batching Probability

New 01 Jun 2024 Asked by lazcarno 16 Comments

"if/when: batching for "undead" creatures (zombies, skeletons, vampires, ghouls etc.)?" "If, but I could see it working in the right set." What are the chances that the next Innistrad set has vampires, zombies and werewolves batched as "monsters" or a similar term? (See for example Victim of Night.)

The batch doesn’t want to be too high a percentage of the set.

Undead Creatures Batching Potential

if/when: batching for "undead" creatures (zombies, skeletons, vampires, ghouls etc.)?

If, but I could see it working in the right set.

Normal Colorless Cards

New 17 May 2024 Asked by 3-slugcat-pilots-7-ornithopters 20 Comments

When you make those normal colorless cards, are they likely going to take spots from colorless artifacts in a set skeleton?

Usually, but not always. You can always exchange a cycle of monocolored cards for five colorless cards if your set needs them.

Hiya, huge fan of skeletons and seeing so many great ones being printed lately has made me really happy and really excited for more.

Glad to hear that.

Play Boosters Structure

Now that we're a few sets into Play Boosters, what are the chances of getting a new Design Skeleton article for the new rarity splits?

Here is my “Nuts & Bolts” column I wrote last month about Play Boosters: (it includes the new design skeleton)

Humanoid vs Monster Commanders

New 05 Apr 2024 Asked by jonscreenshow 32 Comments

First, I want to say I really like Thunder Junction more than I thought I would. It could end up being my favorite set this year. Great job to you and the team! Second, back in AFR, the commander precons had a humanoid adventurer face commander and a monster alt commander. I thought that was really cool because I'm a big fan of monsters and weird creatures and love building decks with them as the commander. Magic has some really great monsterous creature types that are underrepresented as legendary creatures. I don't know if I'm alone in this, but I'd love for one humanoid and one beast/monster commander to be the norm for precon design. The Grand Larceny, Desert Bloon, and Quick Draw precons are great examples of this. Having Yuma, Gonti, and Stella Lee as the humanoid face commanders and Kirri Talented Sprout, Felix Five Boots, and Eris Roar of the Storm as the more monstrous alt commanders.
I bring this up because I was really hoping for something a little more monsterous for the Most Wanted precon alt commander. Like a Skeleton or Nightmare or Horror or Minotaur, or Bird. Something along those lines would be really interesting with one of the outlaw creature types. Instead, we got a Dwarf. Vihaan Goldwaker is a great card, don't get me wrong. I just wish that every precon could have alt commanders that are a little more "out there" in terms of creature type usage instead of another human or dwarf or elf, etc. What are your thoughts on this?

My thoughts are there’s some one out there who loves Dwarves who’s super happy because we made a Dwarf card for them. I hear you that you’d like more non-humanoid legendary creatures, and that is something we’re dedicated to doing, as evidenced by the decks you did enjoy, but there’s a lot of player desires to meet, which means we need to spread the love a bit.

Homarids Everywhere

New 01 Apr 2024 Asked by fencepostmagpie 57 Comments

I heard a rumour that Duskmourne is going to be the first set where every creature is a Homarid. Is that true?

It is. What’s scarier than a set full of Homarids? Skeleton Homarids, Zombie Homarids, Brushwagg Homarids, etc.

Limited Design Dual Lands

New 27 Mar 2024 Asked by deathpunch4477 16 Comments

When designing sets for limited, do you guys tend to add things like the guildgates, dual taplands or the gain 1 life taplands after finishing the skeleton? How do they fit into the design skeleton otherwise?

Vision design will put a cycle of dual lands at common if the set structure needs it, and will take a stab at a version to use. Set design is free to change it up if what vision design made isn’t fitting the other needs of the set.

Tinybones' Previous Race

New 19 Mar 2024 Asked by j-waffles 55 Comments

What race was tinybones before he died and became a skeleton? He’s obviously too small to have ever been a human, but he seems too small to be the skeleton of a goblin of Kithkin either.

I do not know. Kithkins are on Dominaria and they’re smaller, but that’s just a guess.

Blue's Vigilance Question

New 15 Mar 2024 Asked by jjustin1379 30 Comments

Why does blue need vigilance so badly? It went from none to a lot in the design skeleton more so than mechanics blue has had for years. Why not just use when this creature attacks untap it?

It’s just simpler to use vigilance. We also are more willing to have a third color have evergreen keywords.

Trolls and Skeletons

New 13 Mar 2024 Asked by sjk9000 32 Comments

You guys more or less phased out "regenerate" with temporary indestructiblity, right? Does that mean we can expect Trolls and Skeletons to have that ability going forward?

With a few exceptions, we try not to tie creature types exclusively to a single mechanic. Some Trolls and Skeletons could do that.

Set Design Skeletons

New 12 Mar 2024 Asked by khaoskrtr 23 Comments

How many different "Set Skeletons" do you have? I see similar patterns in every set, and I feel like a lot of the skeletal components don't *need* to be in every set. Having different set skeletons might help with that. Maybe we could go a few sets without a Moat Piranhas variant. Also, you could have a skeleton specifically for formats you want to be fast, and a different skeleton for when you want the format to be slow (less 1 drops, etc.)

The set skeleton is just a default starting place. Each set deviates from it in different ways.
