Recurring Nightmare Reprint Query

New 10 Jun 2024 Asked by niuttuc 11 Comments

Your article today mentions Set Design tried putting a straight Recurring Nightmare reprint into Modern, then removed it when it playtested too strong... Recurring Nightmare is on the Reserved List, which your article didn't mention. Did it not come up until after the playtests?

It’s possible they put it in and then remembered they couldn’t. I just know it was in the file for a short blip. Maybe they were getting a sense of it knowing they’d tweak it later.

Counting Princess Cards

New 27 May 2024 Asked by zombsidian 5 Comments

Of the over 27,000 Magic cards made, only four have the word Princess in their name. The first Princess Lucrezia came out in Legends back in 1994. Two are from Eldraine, our fairy tale inspired plane: Beloved Princess and The Princess Takes Flight. The final one is the only Universes Beyond card, from The Princess Bride Secret Lair: Buttercup, Provincial Princess.

I don't mean to "Uhm, actually" but don't Princess Twilight Sparkle and Nightmare Moon // Princess Luna also count twoards the Princess name count?

They do. I don’t know why my search didn’t bring them up.

Humanoid vs Monster Commanders

New 05 Apr 2024 Asked by jonscreenshow 32 Comments

First, I want to say I really like Thunder Junction more than I thought I would. It could end up being my favorite set this year. Great job to you and the team! Second, back in AFR, the commander precons had a humanoid adventurer face commander and a monster alt commander. I thought that was really cool because I'm a big fan of monsters and weird creatures and love building decks with them as the commander. Magic has some really great monsterous creature types that are underrepresented as legendary creatures. I don't know if I'm alone in this, but I'd love for one humanoid and one beast/monster commander to be the norm for precon design. The Grand Larceny, Desert Bloon, and Quick Draw precons are great examples of this. Having Yuma, Gonti, and Stella Lee as the humanoid face commanders and Kirri Talented Sprout, Felix Five Boots, and Eris Roar of the Storm as the more monstrous alt commanders.
I bring this up because I was really hoping for something a little more monsterous for the Most Wanted precon alt commander. Like a Skeleton or Nightmare or Horror or Minotaur, or Bird. Something along those lines would be really interesting with one of the outlaw creature types. Instead, we got a Dwarf. Vihaan Goldwaker is a great card, don't get me wrong. I just wish that every precon could have alt commanders that are a little more "out there" in terms of creature type usage instead of another human or dwarf or elf, etc. What are your thoughts on this?

My thoughts are there’s some one out there who loves Dwarves who’s super happy because we made a Dwarf card for them. I hear you that you’d like more non-humanoid legendary creatures, and that is something we’re dedicated to doing, as evidenced by the decks you did enjoy, but there’s a lot of player desires to meet, which means we need to spread the love a bit.

Beast Type Explanation

New 31 Mar 2024 Asked by thisusernameisridiculous 38 Comments

Do you have a DtW where you break down Beast a little more as a type? I'm trying to figure out where it fits in the devolution of the type line, and I just read "Human Barbarian Beast," on [[Barbarian Outcast]],"Beast Horror Spirit," on [[Chupacabra Echo]],"Nightmare Beast Elemental," on [[Brokkos, Apex of Forever]], and"Plant Elemental Beast," on [[Carnivorous Moss Beast]], so it feels like there's been a few changes on where it should be placed?

Beast is one of a small handful of creature types that can fill both race and class slots depending on how it’s used.

Swamps in Pie

New 26 Mar 2024 Asked by brazilnutdust 19 Comments

"Dakkon Blackblade is definitely a color pie break, right? Right?!?It’s a green ability on a white/blue/black card. : )"
This made me think of a related question. I know counting lands generally is core green, but is counting swamps still in pie for black? (ex: Nightmare, Mutilate, Cabal Coffers)

Yes, it’s still in pie for black.

Nightmare Fun Fact

New 16 Mar 2024 Asked by billcry 18 Comments

Hey Mark, wanted to see if I could use my “Birthday Trivia Card” to get a fun fact about nightmares (the creature type)

They are one of only a handful of creatures to ever get a new mechanic centered around them (in Torment). Happy Birthday!

Space Beleren Legality

New 27 Feb 2024 Asked by brendo 26 Comments

Curious as to how hard of a decision it was to let Space Beleren through and be legal. Like, it does seem like it works rule wise, but the card is a tracking nightmare

Magic has many eternal legal cards with tracking issues. It’s not a deal breaker.

Horror vs Nightmare

New 07 Jan 2024 Asked by hodorkotb 41 Comments

Hey Mark,What's the conceptual difference between a Horror and a Nightmare?

Nightmares are the living embodiment of a nightmare, scary creatures from dreams come to life. Horror is a larger catch-all for horrific things that don’t have a dedicated creature type, similar to what Beast is for larger animals.

Silver Outline Suggestion

New 05 Dec 2023 Asked by nabistay 42 Comments

I know the mixing of silver border and black Border in the printing process is a logistical nightmare, but what about a thicker silver 'outline' around acorn cards and keeping the border black?

The two can be mixed with enough planning. It was hard to retrofit.

Griffin Token Omission

New 23 Sep 2023 Asked by szwanger 27 Comments

Why didn't Wizards put Griffin tokens (for Griffin Aerie) in Wilds of Eldraine boosters? They come up more often than Ashiok's Nightmare tokens.

I assume it was a space issue.

Rarity-Based Mechanics

New 18 Sep 2023 Asked by livbrazilian 46 Comments

could there exist a planes that its mechanics are based on the rarity of the card? for exemplo a plane on where all creatures are common , all artificats are mytichs and etc

That would be a nightmare to design, and the normal rules can’t mechanically care about rarity. (Acorn has and can.)

Praise for Bargain Mechanic

New 10 Sep 2023 Asked by thegameeismine 28 Comments

Hi Mark!
I just wanted to say, I love the Bargain mechanic from WOE!
It adds so many interesting choices when drafting, deck-building and in gameplay, balancing up your bargain fodder with spells that bargain, and it feels so good to sacrifice permanents for extra value like Hatching Plans or Hopeless Nightmare!Excellent work!!

Glad you like it.

Bug Set Desire

New 31 Aug 2023 Asked by kaptain-kota 48 Comments

I was severely disappointed that Ikoria focused on nightmares instead of insects, as bugs are one of my favorite things ever. I'd like to also voice my intense interest in a bug set.

Insects were on the table, but didn’t capture the feel we wanted for the set’s monsters.

Story Gleaning Feedback

New 24 Aug 2023 Asked by jozogozo 40 Comments

As someone who mostly gleams the story of each set through the cards, I was far more confused about what was happening in Wilds of Eldraine than in previous sets. I knew Ashiok was putting people to sleep and giving them nightmares, but the story spotlight cards were all about Kellan going on an adventure that seemed to not involve Ashiok or the sleeping spell whatsoever (at least on the cards). Obviously there's story online I can read to figure it out, but just wanted to give some feedback.

How do others feel about gleaning the story from just the cards?

Card Context Appreciation

New 16 Aug 2023 Asked by wind-to-your-sails 36 Comments

I would just like to express great love for the way the cards Stroke of Midnight and Glass Casket provide context for the characters of Ash Party Crasher and Neva Plagued by Nightmares without needing a secondary source like the Meet the Legends articles! Very in favor of this approach going forward!

I’ll pass along the compliment to the creative team.

Double-Tapping Complexity

New 13 Jun 2023 Asked by nothingbutland-blog 54 Comments

Do you think Kamagawa flip technology could be used on cards that extra tap? So for cards that could be tapped an addition 90°gain or lose something. Or is that too much complexity on board?

We tried double-tapping and it was a logistical nightmare.

Zendikar Land Adventure

New 01 Apr 2023 Asked by hoondle 33 Comments

I'm so excited for Return to Return to Revenge of Return to Zendikar! I'm surprised everything in the set is lands, considering your stance on gimmick sets, not to mention the rules nightmares you've said land creatures are. Still, I'm excited for the new Battle for Zendikar land battle, as well as the Wrenn and Ashaya planeswalker land!

I’m excited for adventure lands. Such a great fit for Zendikar.

Digital Mechanics Adaptation

New 21 Mar 2023 Asked by heavenlyevan 97 Comments

Are there effects that Magic used to do that it avoids doing because of digital? One example I was thinking of was something like Mindslaver effects, which seem like a monumental task for digital clients.

Naming Batches

New 29 Jan 2023 Asked by zackdes44 42 Comments

What's the main driver behind giving a batch a name (i.e. historic) vs just saying "Samurai and Warrior" or "horrors and nightmares"? I prefer the former personally.

Usually, it has to have three or more items to batch (aka create a term).

Phyrexian Arc Build-Up

New 17 Jan 2023 Asked by amateurauteur 49 Comments

Where was there any "subtle build-up" of the Phyrexian arc in any set between New Phyrexia and Kaldheim, except for a brief mention of the Sylex in Dominaria (2018)?

The planar bridge in the Bolas Arc, Elspeth’s nightmare in Theros Beyond Death, Pretty much every appearance of Karn. It was subtle, it wasn’t non-existent.
