Dominaria

Definition of One On Rabiah Scale

New 26 Jul 2024 Asked by brendo 6 Comments

Hey Mark, exactly what would it take for a plane to be a 1 on the rabiah scale? And has there ever been a plane, besides maybe dominaria, that has been a 1 at any point?

Ravnica is a 1.

DOM and ELD Trivia

New 08 Jul 2024 Asked by ella-is-scarlet-exclusive 4 Comments

Hey Mark, it's my birthday! Can I get trivia on DOM or ELD? They were both significant milestones in my MTG journey and are dear to me.

Dominaria was originally going to be a small block (one larger set and one small), but the small set got changed into a core set just before it was about to begin design.Happy Birthday!

Source Material in Newer Sets

New 04 Jul 2024 Asked by lookingupanddown 4 Comments

How much of the complaints about newer sets being cliche (and older sets not), stem to using more known source material? A lot of older sets do have real-world inspiration, it's just that either the material is something much less well-known... or it's Dominaria and the time spent there means a lot of stuff gets spun up easily.

As Magic gets older, we’re cutting our inspiration sources a little thinner to be able to make more different worlds. That’s a contributing factor.

Appreciating Duskmourne's Uniqueness

New 29 Jun 2024 Asked by atogota 6 Comments

I think Duskmourne looks awesome and I love how different the analog horror approach is. The "fish out of water" aspect of traveling between wildly different planes has been a core part of Magic since we first left Dominaria, but that becomes harder and harder to do the more sets you make since there are only so many ways to make high fantasy settings feel truly distinct from one another. This feels like a logical evolution.

Glad you enjoy it.

Return to Fallen Empires

New 28 Jun 2024 Asked by godkingjinping 4 Comments

When do you anticipate a return to fallen empires

I think its chances are low. I assume we will be back to Dominaria, and maybe even see Sarpadia, but I’m skeptical we’ll do a whole set redoing Fallen Empires.

R&D Secrecy Protocol

New 24 Jun 2024 Asked by theindigosystem 9 Comments

How much is R&D allowed to lie? If I specifically asked, say, "is Liliana of the Veil being reprinted in Dominaria United" prior to the set's spoiler season, could you say no even though it's true? Or is *that* why you have you signature maybes?

That’s a big part of the maybes. I have to answer questions without using the knowledge I have, because I don’t want to give away the future.

Legendary Saproling Creatures

New 17 Jun 2024 Asked by lazcarno 0 Comments

On the subject of non-token saprolings, & the recurring request for a legendary saproling, I'd like to point out that on Dominaria (and possibly other planes), saprolings "grow up" into Thallids, which have the creature type Fungus. "Slimefoot the Stowaway" is, presumably intentionally, very close to being a legendary saproling; in that he is a legendary creature who cares about saprolings, is in fact an "adult saproling," & his story article even describes him maturing from a common saproling.

Sarpadian Themed Set Possibility

New 14 Jun 2024 Asked by mishrasbogle 2 Comments

I'm sure it would be a nostalgia set popular for a specific group of enfranchised players, but where is a Sarpadian remastered style set (imagine redoing Fallen Empires with the ten factions with modern magic design) on a supplemental storm scale?

I have faith we’ll be returning to Dominaria. It all being Sarpadia is a low percentage chance, but some of the set could be from there.

Dominaria United Monocolor Themes

New 04 Jun 2024 Asked by shahrathestoryteller 30 Comments

Hi Mark! I would like to request some birthday trivia please! Specifically, in Dominaria United, each monocolor was assigned a mechanical theme (e.g. White = Go Wide, Blue = Sorceries and Instants matter). I was wondering if you could please elaborate the monocolor themes in Throne of Eldraine as I believe they aren't explicitly stated anywhere on l'internet.

Each of the five courts had a virtue which we built the color around mechanically, as well as flavorfully:
  • White Court (Ardenvale) – Loyalty
  • Blue Court (Vantress) – Knowledge
  • Black Court (Lochthwain) – Persistence
  • Red Court (Embereth) – Courage
  • Green Court (Garenbrig) – Strength
White leaned into “go wide” with creatures helping one another.Blue leaned into control with card drawing.Black leaned into graveyard recursion.Red leaned into aggression.Green leaned into caring about creature size.Happy Birthday!

Legends Retold Future Possibilities

New 03 Jun 2024 Asked by randomette2 20 Comments

I really liked the Dominaria United Legends Retold, is there any chance the remaining legends characters might get new designs at some point in the future?

People liked those cards, so yes, there is a chance.

Phyrexian Invasion Feedback

New 23 May 2024 Asked by kippermydog 22 Comments

I'd like to add my support to the voices disappointed by the lack of fallout shown from the Phyrexian invasion... of Dominaria. I just checked the cards in Odyssey block, and there's no ruined buildings, no dead Phyrexians, nothing! Sure, the block's entire story comes about as a result of Karn gaining a spark, but I was looking forward to a year of mourning families and civil construction projects. All I got instead was a cool story about pit fighters wrestling over a mysterious artifact.

Corrupted Cards Opinion

New 18 May 2024 Asked by su92 48 Comments

I understand that MH3 wants to reference famous cards (and that's great!) but I'm getting a bit tired of the "Old card/character but corrupted" trope (referring to the Eldrazi versions). Maybe it's because we just had DMU, ONE *and* MOM do it just last year, or maybe I've played Magic for too long and I still remember SOM and SOI blocks doing that as well. What's the general opinion on this kind of cards?

They’re very popular.

Teferi Emblem Mechanics

New 14 May 2024 Asked by pantshkek 15 Comments

You’ve said before that “destroy target permanent” should only be printed on WB and BG cards. Teferi, Hero of Dominaria gives you an emblem with “Whenever you draw a card, exile target permanent an opponent controls.” despite being a WU card. Is this a break, or a bend?

It’s a bend. White can pinpoint destroy any permanent type except land, and by the time you jump through the hoop, it’s late enough in the game that destroying a land is just going to be a very low option.

Rabiah Setting Potential

New 08 May 2024 Asked by tevans-living-life 32 Comments

In prep for your upcoming Rabiah scale article, I wanted to give mad props to whoever decided on putting a Rabiah reference in Dominaria United! My question: Has Rabiah been pitched as a setting following the success of Neon Dynasty? Such references seem like a good sign of Magic’s willingness to acknowledge it.

Rabiah’s biggest issue is it’s based on an outside property (one in public domain) and was done at a time where very little world building was done by Wizards. If we wanted to redo it, it’s not far away from doing a brand new world. There’s very little to salvage.

Purpose of Multiverse and Inter-planar Travel

New 02 May 2024 Asked by wulframofthedas 62 Comments

What's the point of a multiverse now its so easy to move between planes? Aren't Ravnica/Kaladesh/New Capenna and the rest of the the planes mixed around Thunder Junction just like a new version of Dominaria now?

Omenpaths are unstable (they can come and go) and not super frequent, so it’s not an easy task for a character to go from plane A to plane B if they aren’t a planeswalker.

Gripe About Batching

New 22 Apr 2024 Asked by jdrawer01 82 Comments

Mark, I've given myself time to think on it, and this one Goose's opinion is that we shouldn't do more creature type batches. I'm going to use a fictional card called "Dr. Marten, Herpetologist" as a framing device. I understand how "Reptiles you control have [the curiosity effect]" may ring as flavorful and also save space. However, I feel like saying "Reptiles (Lizards, Snakes, and Crocodiles are reptiles)" rather than "Lizards, Snakes, and Crocodiles you control have [the curiosity effect]" makes it seem like the team has little confidence in our ability to make the connection. Given how many context clues Magic cards provide, I think you should have more faith (a gripe I share with flavor words). That being said, happy Earth Day! and do you have any research that shows players aren't able to make the connection as well as I think?

Batching came about in Dominaria. We were tying artifacts, legendary cards, and Sagas together as things that represented the past. We tried numerous templates and the playtesters just didn’t get it. Backed into a corner (Bill, our VP, told me he was going to force me to cut the mechanic if people weren’t getting it), I tried something new, giving the combined items a flavor word and then listing them in reminder text. It worked. Playtesters finally got it. So yes, I have little confidence in the audience making the connection, but that’s because I tried the alternative, many alternatives actually, and the audience didn’t get it.

Sealed Play Enjoyment

New 13 Apr 2024 Asked by cthulhusaurusrex 39 Comments

Hey Mark, just got back from a prerelease (my first prerelease since Dominaria!) and I had a great time. I really enjoyed the spree cards in sealed, I love the way the deserts that deal 1 to target opponent worked as mana fixing off of cards that searched for them (Spinewoods Armadillo especially, that card was super fin) and count for committing a crime, commit a crime itself made for some interesting deck building decisions, and mounts were a nice way to unstick boards full of creatures.I was even sceptical about all the extra cards filling slots (big score, special guests, and breaking news), but I found that it was exciting to see old cards that I think fondly of (I got to see murder, voidslime, etc. and I found that the designs look much better to me in person than it did as spoilers) as well as pull some fun new cards from the big score. Overall I think the set felt great to play with in sealed and I had an awesome time, high fives all around!

High fives shall be applied. I’m happy you had such a good time.

Shared Mechanic Idea

New 13 Apr 2024 Asked by jimharbor 40 Comments

Given the thematic overlap between a villian/crime set and a murder mystery set, and with MKM and OTJ being next to eachother, was there any thought in having a shared mechanic between them? For example, back introducing a crime card or two into MKM similar to how DMU had one powerstone card.

It wasn’t discussed at the time. With hindsight, I think we could have done something.
