Chatterfang's Homeland Uncertainty

New 14 Jul 2024 Asked by noybusiness 6 Comments

I'd like to point out that if Chatterfang, Squirrel General is now from Bloomburrow, that would be a retcon, because his bio in "The New Legends of Modern Horizons 2" mentions him fighting drakes and orcs, which apparently don't exist in Bloomburrow.

I do not know where Chatterfang is from.

Volatile Stormdrake's Color Pie Classification

New 04 Jun 2024 Asked by zorroaburrito 42 Comments

Is Volatile Stormdrake a break/bend?

No. Let me explain. There are two different types of color pie restrictions. The first is mechanical. Printing the card with the ability is a bend or a break. The second is aesthetic. We like to make colors feel different, so there are some things we don’t do in a color to keep it from stepping on another color. We stopped doing Pongify in blue, not because it was a mechanical issue, but an aesthetic one. We want white removal with a consolation to feel different than blue transformation. Also, we didn’t like the word “destroy” in a blue text box as it confused people (as blue doesn’t destroy permanents). Bleeding into aesthetic territory isn’t a bend or break, so no Volatile Stormdrake isn’t a bend/break.

Internal Card Database Tool

New 20 Mar 2024 Asked by spacyakrone 35 Comments

Do wizards employees have a special internal card library tool? Something like scryfall or gatherer to use when cross referencing existing cards when making new ones. Does it include cards currently in development or unreleased cards that have been decided to be printed? Bonus q: if no such tool exists, do you guys use gatherer, scryfall, or something else?

We have an internal card database we call Drake.

Praise for Geardrake

I just went 3-0 in draft thanks to getting 3 copies of Gleaming Geardrake. Please give a high five to someone (or multiple someones) who helped design that card!

Will do.

Reprint Request

New 02 Dec 2023 Asked by razorofartorias 26 Comments

Hi Mark! I hope you are having a great weekend. I don't know if you can pass this message to the team that handles reprints to put in the to-reprint list the ten common cards that still had a old frame on the Pauper Cube: Deftblade Elite, Phantom Nomad, Capsize, Miscalculation, Ashes to Ashes, Pestilence, Tortured Existence, Silver Drake, Temporal Spring and Cavern Harpy. Thanks!

I’ll pass the list along.

Tarkir Trivia Surprise

New 14 Mar 2023 Asked by thetabbybadger 41 Comments

Hello Mr. Rosewater! I am humbly requesting for my birthday some fun facts/trivia on drakes as a creature type, drake tribal, or the plane of Tarkir. Or if you'd rather, your favorite fun fact about anything! Thanks and have a good evening! :D

Tarkir, the plane, originally had a different name, but we had to change it late in the process. Happy Birthday!

Duck Bird Card

New 04 Aug 2022 Asked by solaris-adz 24 Comments

Hello Mark! Today is my birthday! But I don't really have something related to duck to ask since last time you told us the story of the drake, and we since had two cards with ducks in the art (the neon frame March of Otherworldly Light and Rumor Gatherer). So instead may I ask for a bird card representing a duck?

You may.Happy Birthday!

Perception of Urza Block Ostracization

New 17 May 2022 Asked by rekian 42 Comments

In a recent poll in Twitter listing top 4 sets in MTG history, Urza’s Saga and block as a whole received a spot in a lot of them, almost on pair with Invasion, Innistrad or Ravnica. Nonetheless, it seems WOTC still ostracizes the block. So, so many memorable cards that helped define so many decks: Carpet of Flowers, Sneak Attack, Show and Tell, Gaea’s Cradle, Serra’s Sanctum, Gilded Drake, Yawgmoth’s Will, Grim Monolith, Crop Rotation, Frantic Search, Replenish, Academy Rector, Opalescence, Yawgmoth’s Bargain, Powder Keg, Rofellos… and I could go on and on. I love that beautiful, relaxed, cartoony artwork too. Any love for Urzas Block here?

How exactly do we “ostracize” Urza’s block?

Prospect for Legendary Drake

New 28 Mar 2022 Asked by sceada 36 Comments

How are the chances looking for a legendary Drake in one of the upcoming sets? Or any form of Drake lord instead?

I think we’ll probably do both one day (the former more likely sooner than the latter).

Legendary Drake and Tarkir Info

New 15 Mar 2022 Asked by dameerzulie-blog 38 Comments

Hi! I'm 29 today! Can I have a "maybe" for a legendary drake? Or something about Tarkir? (that's my favourite plane) And congrats, Kamigawa Neon was fascinating, loved it! ~

Maybe. : )Tarkir was first Mongseng (based on a Planechase card), and then Khanar, before finally being named Tarkir. Happy Birthday!

Murktide Regent Creature Type

New 21 Nov 2021 Asked by thetabbybadger 30 Comments

Happy Sunday Mr. Rosewater! I was thinking of MH2 today and it reminded me of a question I believe I forgot to ask. Murktide Regent is mono-blue and cares about instants and sorceries (especially in the graveyard) so it seems like a natural fit for our very first mythic rare drake. Do you know what was the deciding factor to make it a dragon instead? Drakes are my favorite creature type so I’m a little biased, but it seemed like the perfect opportunity to me. Thanks for taking the time to answer our questions and have a nice day! :D

It’s mostly a size issue. Drakes tend to be a bit smaller and Murktide Regent can get pretty big.

Request for Duck Depiction

New 15 Nov 2021 Asked by solaris-adz 210 Comments

Hello Mark! May I ask for a card depicting a duck someday?

Here’s a famous Magic story you may or may not have heard. We got a new artist and gave them the art description “show a lightning bolt hitting a drake”. The sketch comes in and it showed a male duck being hit by lightning. So, we at least got a duck in a sketch once. I do think one day we’ll get a duck on a Magic card.

Misunderstood Art Commission

New 14 Jul 2021 Asked by ghostwiththemost69 46 Comments

I heard there was a misunderstanding in the past regarding a commission for a art. It was supposed to be a drake getting hit with a lightning bolt but the artist thought it meant a mallard. If this is true what happens with unused art like that. And I'm sure that'd be a great secret lair.

It’s true and it was caught and fixed at the sketch stage.

Discussion about Printed Cards

New 18 May 2021 Asked by sniffnoy 39 Comments

Some of the cards you say in your column today didn't make it to print did, in fact, make it to print! Butterfly became Whip-Spine Drake; Spellwild Dog became Spellwild Ouphe; Boss Scragnoth became Quagnoth. Also, Sneaky Goblin seems a lot like Street Wraith, and Veiled Clone like Shapeshifter's Marrow. Also the green common kicker/convoke creature did make it, as Kavu Primarch; Sprout Swarm was in addition. Also, one of the vanishing cycle you say got cut did stay, as Lost Auramancers.

Database Renaming Timeline

New 23 Mar 2021 Asked by mtgplayer47 31 Comments

at what point did the database multiverse get renamed to drake?

The database didn’t get renamed. We got a new database which had its own name. This happened five or so years ago, I believe.

Defining 'Drake'

What is "Drake" you mentioned? Not the creature type.

It’s the name of our internal database.

Usage of Drake Database

New 11 Mar 2021 Asked by lucas2099 28 Comments

Do you guys have a different database for cards still in development or Drake cover it as well?

Drake is used primarily for making new product, but the old product is still in it.

Inside Gatherer's Information

New 10 Mar 2021 Asked by kerning-pete 78 Comments

Can you give an example of info that Drake has that Gatherer doesn't? Or is it all ~*~secret~*~

There are fields for every aspect of the card because we have to care about everything production wise. For example, I don’t think Gatherer can search for a certain watermark or particular legal text.

Wizards' Card Database Query

New 09 Mar 2021 Asked by thisididnotdo 58 Comments

Mark, do Wizards staff have access to an internal card database with more detail and categorisation of cards, or do y'all use gatherer?

We have our own database. It’s called Drake. I have no idea why. The last one was called Multiverse which was a much cleverer name.
