Duel Scenario Subtype

New 18 May 2024 Asked by crimsonandrose-blog 35 Comments

Is it possible to have battles that notate a specific player? Like a duel scenario? My thoughts were like two cowboys at high noon or samurai paired up.

That isn’t how Sieges work, but a new subtype could work differently.

Neon Dynasty Design Origins

New 09 May 2024 Asked by jirachibi2550 9 Comments

So you've said before that Neon Dynasty started, correct me if im wrong, without Ninjitsu or Samurai and more of a focus on Auras and Sagas vs Vehicles and Equipment, with Ninja and Samurai being the commander decks. How far along did those come? I've heard people say Isshin and Satoru were the precon face commanders and were put into the set instead? Is that true? :)

Ninjutsu wasn’t in the vision design handoff with plans of it being a focus of a Ninja Commander deck, but that’s the only thing you stated that I actually said.

Wulfgar and Isshin Colors

New 05 Apr 2024 Asked by sublimebearapricothands-blog 29 Comments

Why is Wulfgar gruul and Isshin mardu?

Wulfgar was matching the character, and Isshin was made to play with three colors of Samurai.

Planeswalkers in Stories

New 26 Mar 2024 Asked by ricardolongo 54 Comments

Here's some constructive criticism on the stories: I think it's kinda dull that a lot of planeswalker cards can make tokens, but we never see that happening in the stories. It would have been cool to see the Wanderer conjuring Samurai to fight for her, for example, or Oko summoning an Elk in one of the many situations in the recent history in which that would have been useful. As is, the planeswalkers feel too much like normal characters. (Elspeth even had to fistfight back in New Capenna!)

We learned long ago that making the stories too exact to the cards leads to less good stories.

More Samurai Promise

Can we get more samurai?

Some day.

Samurai Mechanics Change

What was biggest reason to change samurai from Bushido to attacking alone from og kamigawa to new kamigawa?

It played better.

Red Vigilance Bend

New 19 Oct 2023 Asked by thetitan555 26 Comments

How is vigilance in red a bend? Red doesn't get to play both aggressively and defensively, it has to choose whether to bolt face or an attacking creature.

I don’t think we would put vigilance on a red creature. The issue at hand was there was only one 2/2 Knight creature token and we decided to allow the bend so Red could create a Samurai. It’s not the kind of thing we do often.

Future Class Enchantments

New 19 Aug 2023 Asked by cerezawrites 34 Comments

I know Class enchantments were a 4 on the storm scale last time someone asked. If you did them again, would they be based on the creature classes in the game that weren't used in the initial batch (i.e. Samurai, Ninja, Shaman)?

Maybe. : )

Dual Typal Cards

New 19 Aug 2023 Asked by su92 37 Comments

Can we continue getting more "dual typal" cards like how Kamigawa got Ninja/Rogue and Samurai/Warrior? I know Faeries have way more cards, but even there some WOE Faerie typal cards saying for example "Faerie or Rogue" would probably be more versatile across formats.

We’ll do it where it fits.

Will we get to see a Phyrexian samurai creature type in the near future?

Maybe. : )

Batching for Eternal Formats

New 14 Feb 2023 Asked by theuninvitedghost 27 Comments

I think batching is one of the things that should be done to make the cards more relevant in eternal formats. More reasons to break out old cards makes me want to keep playing Magic more. Referencing only things that are in the new thing doesn’t make me want to buy the new things.

That’s why we do it. Samurai being connected to Warriors, and Ninja to Rogues, was an (unnamed) batch last year.

Tribal Batching Views

New 02 Feb 2023 Asked by throwawayaccountant14 40 Comments

Hi Mark, with all the talk of tribal recently, can I maybe voice a counterpoint/unpopular opinion? As someone who loves making individual tribal decks, I greatly dislike batching of lesser established creature types. Mixing Warrior/Samurai or Wizard/Giants takes away from the unique identity of each tribe. Can we get more lords for lesser types like Clerics did in Dominaria United? Cats/Pirates/Minotaurs/etc could all greatly benefit from a 2 cmc lord that gives +1/+1 to their respective types.

We only get so many slots to do creature type caring cards. Batching allows us to hit more of them and also does a better job of enabling certain themes to hit a large enough volume to work in Commander. We’ll stick make the single creature type cards, but batching is a useful tool to make more players happy.

Double Tribal Cards

New 01 Feb 2023 Asked by su92 33 Comments

Since we're talking creature type themes, I want to request more double tribal cards or batching in general. Things like Giant/Wizard cards or Samurai/Warrior cards basically double the available pool.

Batching is a tool we’re trying to make more use of, especially with creature types.

Naming Batches

New 29 Jan 2023 Asked by zackdes44 42 Comments

What's the main driver behind giving a batch a name (i.e. historic) vs just saying "Samurai and Warrior" or "horrors and nightmares"? I prefer the former personally.

Usually, it has to have three or more items to batch (aka create a term).

Samurai Card Compatibility

New 29 Jan 2023 Asked by jericuboritox 50 Comments

why do the Samurai cards in Kamigawa specify "Samurai and Warrior" creatures when Soldiers ended up being a lot more prominent in the following few sets?

To increase backward compatibility.

Batching Cards

New 13 Aug 2022 Asked by maussius 39 Comments

Hi Mark! Mark here. You've said multiple times previously that wotc likes "batching" but afaik you've only used it once? (Historic). Other examples I can think of are the joining of rogues/ninjas and samurai/warriors in NEO but that was just a couple of cards, you didn't create a new term to unify them and its function was to help some creature types be more relevant for limited and eternal formats so why do you think there hasn't been any more " real " batching since Dominaria if you like it so much?

Modified in Neon Dynasty is another example of batching.

Samurai Critique in NEO

New 07 Aug 2022 Asked by submergedforgottencladogram 42 Comments

I understand that people like a lot of things, but I'm shocked to read that people disliked the samurai in NEO. They were my favorite archetype by far, very flavorful for my understanding of samurai, and I found their implementation (providing a diversity of effects to the single attacker) a lot more interesting than Exalted.

I am curious how high the expectations were. Would Design have had to found a way to make Bushido or Exalted work better in modern-day Standard to satisfy those disappointed with NEO's samurai?

I think the criticism was more that they didn’t work well with the previous Samurai more so than they didn’t work together in limited.

Kamigawa Draft Themes

New 07 Aug 2022 Asked by fourcolourcommander 43 Comments

Hi Mark! One of the reasons I think Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty's draft set was so successful was because there was a major mechanical theme (artifacts vs enchantments) as well as various minor mechanical themes (Samurai, Ninjitsu, Channel, Vehicles, Modified, etc.), allowing for a lot of overlap and synergistic permutations in the draft environment, which appears to be an improvement on just 10 themes for each colour pair. Do you plan to implement this major-minor theme design in the future?

Almost all sets have themes beyond the ten two-color pairs.

New from Old Components

New 21 Jul 2022 Asked by zanmor 43 Comments

“make something new out of old components” technology -- what's an example of this if you don't mind?

Batching (historic, modified, party, etc.) and other linked groupings (Ninjas and Rogues, Samurai and Warriors, etc.)

Positive Feedback on Samurai Flavor

New 18 May 2022 Asked by mollyjames 30 Comments

I know it's been a minute, but I wanted to give the feedback that I loved the quasi-Exalted flavor of Neon Dynasty's samurais. I would love to see more similar effects from the tribe in the future!

I’ll pass along the note.
