Rise of Eldrazi Design

New 17 May 2024 Asked by tybonel13 26 Comments

Maybe a bit of a silly question, but if Rise of the Eldrazi were made today would its six colored Eldrazi (Dread Drone, Rapacious One, Nest Invader, etc.):A) Stay the same (colored) B) Have DevoidC) Lose the colored pips and be fully colorless D) Not exist

We would most likely use b) and/or c).

Angel Planeswalker Possibility

New 17 Jul 2022 Asked by solaris-adz 42 Comments

Hello Mark! If or when : an angel planeswalker?I know it shouldn't be possible in theory, for the same reason demons can't, but we have Ob Nixilis and Geyadrone Dihada. Is it possible for New Capenna angels for example? (people have theorized that Elspeth could be one for example)

I never say never.

Exploring Planes and Multiverse

New 06 Mar 2022 Asked by wynnecluster 57 Comments

Something that's great about Magic, I think, is the concept of planes and the multiverse. The whole premise of the game means that it takes place on various walled-off worlds that only a select few can move between. This is a pretty self-evident thing but I think it's important when the subject of technology in Magic comes up.
Sure one set might have flying mechs and drones, and another might even have cars, but that doesn't affect the worlds we visit next. The existence of Neon Dyanasty or New Capenna aren't going to suddenly make more traditional fantasy planes get all tech'd out or anything.
Maybe it's just because I'm a more recent player, but I just don't get the idea of anything being an affront to the "sanctity" of Magic or whatever. Magic is a collection of many diferent things. Worlds, planes, genres, formats, etc.
Just my perspective.

I too think the variety of worlds is a strength of the game.

Sapience Requirement for Gaining Sparks

New 03 Mar 2022 Asked by hitek1208 31 Comments

You said it's possible to get a spark, but I thought only sentient things could get a spark. Are slivers sentiment enough, or would one have to gain enough sentience to then gain a spark (and then go through the process of igniting it). I know karn had a "talk" with the queen back in the weatherlight saga, so maybe...

The Sliver Queen was for sure sapient, so Slivers are capable of sapience. I’m not sure if the drones are less so though.

Sci-Fi Elements in Game

New 23 Feb 2022 Asked by pikachugirltits 98 Comments

If I may chime in on the more sci-fi or not question, I greatly disliked the cyberpunk elements of Kamigawa but I enjoy the aetherpunk of Kaladesh. I think for me, cyberpunk tends to fall on the hard sci-fi side of the spectrum where Kaladesh's aetherpunk felt more soft sci-fi/fantasy, so for me I'd like to see more sci-fi as long as it sticks to a more fantasy aesthetic. I definitely don't want references to circuitry, drones, or terminals.

Every player seems to draw the line in a different place. So, where do all of you draw the line?

Concern Over Planeswalker Gender Balance

New 27 Dec 2021 Asked by schienamento 77 Comments

May I voice a concern of mine? Of all new Planeswalker introduced since Eldraine, 6 of them are men, 1 non binary, 0 women. (I don't count the D&D set ones because they have a lower chance to come back. Still, even counting them, we have a 8-3 rate). It seems to me that we're returning to the old times where most of the cast was men. Can I request (a lot) more woman Planeswalker?

Here’s a list of all the female planeswalkers premiering on a planeswalker card since Throne of Eldraine: Ellywick Tumblestrum Zariel, Archduke of Avernus Lolth, Spider QueenGrist, the Hunger Tide Geyadrone Dihada Jeska, Thrice Born B.O.B. (Bevy of Beebles) (male & female)Gender representation is important to us, and we strive to have a balance. The reason for the slight lean towards male, is we repeated more female planeswalkers as we had them playing bigger roles in the stories, which is also super important. I will stress having a gender balanced planeswalker roster is important to us and something we monitor. Note that we count all planeswalker cards.

Random Eldrazi Request

New 27 Nov 2021 Asked by smashflame 53 Comments

would it be wierd to ask for a single random eldrazi, just fblthp style placed randomly in a set? I'm not talking like the titans themselves but just like some random 1/1 drone like wouldn't that be funny?

All Eldrazi are pieces of one of the titans. No titan, no 1/1.

Geyadrone Dihada and Grixis Trivia

New 16 Aug 2021 Asked by pseudopotence 39 Comments

Salutations Mark! It's my birthday and I was wondering if I could get some trivia on Geyadrone Dihada or the Grixis color combination in general?

The original Grixis mechanic in Shards of Alara was a mechanic that triggered whenever a creature died. That mechanic got de-keyworded and moved to Jund. It appeared on a handful of cards. It was replaced by Unearth, a mechanic I called Flashdance of the Dead when I created it.Happy Birthday!

Geyadrone Dihada's Protection Scope

Hey Mark, I was wondering why Geyadrone Dihada has protection from permanents w/ corruption counters if she only has a way to place the counters on creatures and planeswalkers.

My guess is they needed the shorter template.

Maro, just had my virtual Commander Legends prerelease with my LGS. Really fun time. High fives (virtually) to everyone at WOTC for helping bring joy during this year. Also, as someone who got really into the Magic comics as a kid, thank you for the nostalgic legends. But please Geyadrone Dihada next time!

Happy to hear you enjoyed it. I’ll add Geyadrone Dihada to the list.

Magic in pop culture: in Santa Clarita Diet season 2, episode 8, the character Eric mentions winning a drone in an "all or nothing" game of Magic the Gathering. Apparently characters in this world still play for ante :)

Thanks.

Blue Mana Ramp

New 21 Nov 2016 Asked by mydrel-kyenshi 29 Comments

What exactly is the justification behind blue getting limited mana ramp, a la Cultivator Drone and the front face of Curious Homunculus? Blue already has the largest slice of the colour pie (I spent about 20 minutes running the numbers) and mana ramp feels very not-blue, since blue is the colour of being slow and having inevitability, and mana ramp makes the games go faster.

That’s something Blue has done since nearly the beginning of the game. It’s usually tied thematically to its efficiency of either technology or spell casting.

White Eldrazi Design Choices

New 14 Jan 2016 Asked by ferntasie 14 Comments

Were there any White-costing Eldrazi in design that made it into the set with their color changed? Blinding Drone feels kind of White, for instance.

Those cards mostly didn’t make it, not got changed to another color.

Common Pinger Policies

New 12 Oct 2015 Asked by spadesslick 35 Comments

Back in August, you mentioned that pingers are red flagged at common under NWO. So why is Nettle Drone okay? Not arguing with the decision or anything, just curious.

Red flagged doesn’t mean they can’t exist at common. It means we have to talk about it. Red flagging is just a way to keep things from falling through cracks without discussion.
