Mechanics Granting Haste

New 13 Jun 2023 Asked by submergedforgottencladogram 45 Comments

In terms of mechanics that involve granting haste (with possible trade-offs), how does R&D see Blitz compared to Dash and Riot? Is one more likely to return than another?

Each has its own strengths and weaknesses. Blitz is the most complicated. Riot has the tightest viable design space. Dash has the most structural requirements (meaning it wants certain types of things to also be in the set). I think any of them could return, but Dash seems the most likely.

Resource Systems Complexity

New 20 May 2023 Asked by crazedporcupine 56 Comments

Having read your answer to a question about removing mana screw, this is my response to you. Being a big fan of both MtG and riot games' Legends of Runeterra, and having played Mojang's Scroll (may it rest in peace) I've found that resource generation and designing around the cost of creating that resource can be interesting. I find that LoR's system, by also using a region system similar to the color pie, but maxing out with 2 regions means it's more about resource management of cards in hand, and tools to use to advance the game plan of reducing your opponent's life to 0, and Scrolls was unique in that you had to give up scrolls to add to your mana cap to generate a resource, so it was interesting design. Overall, I've found that in games that use a universal mana system in which everyone gets an additional mana to spend each turn, it becomes a challenge of "how do we maintain a level of variance that ensures the game doesn't get stale?" I think that magic as it is designed now could never be changed to prevent mana issues. The game was always designed around the variance that lands provide. Games like hearthstone and LoR went with deck building restrictions and other systems to ensure enough variance is maintained. If a game is designed to provide mana to each player each turn, other design choices must be made to ensure variance is maintained. I personally think each system has its pros and cons, and each game I've played has done well to design around the pros and minimize the cons.

I think I forgot to make an important point in my answer. I was talking about making a trading card game that was designed to appeal to both enfranchised and non-enfranchised gamers. If you’re aiming at a more enfranchised gamer, like yourself, you do have more options open to you because that type of gamer is much more comfortable handling complex decision trees and tension. That style of gameplay though can drive away less enfranchised gamers. One of the big reasons players exit a game early on is being overwhelmed by it. They get too caught up in the choices they’re asked to make to enjoy the fun of the game. This gets into what I call lenticular design, where you create your game in such a way that the more complex decisions are hidden to the less experienced player. The mana system does that really well. I hope this clarification helps.

Cut Modern Horizons Designs

New 05 Sep 2022 Asked by vereendood 58 Comments

Hello Mark, I'd like to add to the pile of requests a cycle of cards that combine two abilities of a given ravnicas guild. Eg: graft + adapt, afterlife + haunt, bloodlust + riot...Most likely on a supplemental set, given the ensuing complexity.Thank you !

I designed these for original Modern Horizons, but they got cut.

Possible Riot Mechanic Modification

New 24 Mar 2022 Asked by lilyfin 32 Comments

If Riot, the gruul mechanic from Ravnica Allegiance, was made today, would the choice be between a +1/+1 counter and a haste counter?

I’m not sure the haste counter would add much as it seldom matters beyond the first turn.

Slivers with New Mechanics

New 07 Feb 2021 Asked by ryuujin759 43 Comments

Regarding Slivers point 1: how about slivers granting newer mechanics like Foretell, mutate (with a balanced effect), afterlife N, riot, etc.?

Slivers can only grant mechanics that are also in the set they’re in. It’s why we put the in Modern Horizons because we had access to more mechanics.

Appreciation for 'Unsanctioned' Game Format

New 16 May 2020 Asked by calamitouscube 39 Comments

I LOVE UNSANCTIONED! Especially Flavor Judge (aka Vorthos's UnCard) since I invented a Format like it during Onslaught! I felt that Remove Soul shouldn't counter Soulless One, Akroma's Vengeance shouldn't destroy her or Ixidor, Lay Waste shouldn't destroy Wasteland, etc. You can choose to play Flavor(or flip a coin)before any game. You all must agree on something making sense(Like Borborygmos wielding Chariot Of Victory as a fist weapon)or it happens normally. Try it, all my play groups love it!

Happy to hear that.

Return of Storm Scale Articles

New 01 May 2020 Asked by thelyca 36 Comments

What ever happened to the Storm Scale articles on the wizards website? Will they ever return? (The last one was about Kaladesh and Amonkhet) They were very intriguing and insightful. Can we get storm scalings at least for Ixalan and beyond? Namely Explore, Enrage, Ascend, Mentor, Surveil, Jump-start, Undergrowth, Adapt, Addendum, Afterlife, Riot, Spectacle, Amass, Escape, Keyword Counters, Mutate, and Companion.

I’ll do other Storm Scale articles.

Fog Frequency in Green

New 22 Jan 2020 Asked by petruscaex 35 Comments

Mark, why does "Fog" (Green) gets printed much more frequently than global damage prevention (White)? It seems pretty unfair that Green gets both big and (recently) mana-efficient creatures and still gets a "Fog" almost every set, while White's rarely getting damage prevention from multiple sources - like Safe Passage or Riot Control - and counts mostly on little creatures. Making the White version more frequent would also reinforce its "defensive color" aspect.

Many years ago we moved Fog to white. White didn’t end up needing it as it had so many other defensive tools, so we moved it back to green.

White and Fog Effects

New 11 May 2019 Asked by petruscaex 27 Comments

Mark, you said that White don't need fog. Despite that lack of need, White would be considered secondary on fog effects? What about general damage prevention like Riot Control or Safe Passage? Those would be primary on Green or White?

White didn’t need Fog because it had so many other defensive effects like damage prevention. Note I’m defining Fog as prevent all damage from all (or most) creatures.

Silver-Border Keyword Multiples

New 02 Feb 2019 Asked by gazingfromthevoid 19 Comments

Could silver-border care about multiple instances of a keyword? Double haste gained through riot for example? (I'm pretty sure black-border can't)

Silver border can care about that. I’m not sure it happens enough to be relevant though.

Guild Synergy Explanation

New 05 Jan 2019 Asked by verygoodtom 34 Comments

I can't quite see the mechanical overlap between Azorius and its partner guilds. I get Simic/Gruul (+1/+1 counter synergy) and Rakdos/Gruul (Riot enables spectacle). I don't get Orhov/Rakdos either, but Azorius doesn't seem to have much to offer either Orzhov or Simic. Is this because the right cards haven't been spoiled yet, or is there another reason?

Addendum is more done through the executions of individual cards to create synergy.
By the way, Afterlife makes 1/1 fliers. Evasion combos well with Spectacle.

Riot Mechanic Inquiry

New 05 Jan 2019 Asked by razwhar 60 Comments

Maro, First off, happy new year! Hope you enjoyed the holidays. I was wondering about the Riot mechanic - if a creature has multiple instances of Riot, as from having the ability on it's own card and then from an enchantment granting it, do both trigger separately like Flanking with Cavalry Master? So would you get to choose twice whether to get a +1/+1 counter and/or to gain Haste? Have a great day!

Yes, you would. You could even chose haste twice as a pure intimidation tactic. : )

Keyword and Card Naming

New 31 Dec 2018 Asked by monstersgarbage-deactivated2021 36 Comments

In your mind, what is the difference between having Riot (Keyword) on a world with the lord of riots, but not having Explore (Keyword) in a set with Explore (Card).

We don’t have names use words that are keywords in the same set as that keyword (unless it uses the keyword). We don’t hold that restriction to keywords used in other sets as that would making naming cards even more difficult.

Guild and Mechanic Semantic

New 30 Dec 2018 Asked by b4da1r 33 Comments

Unless he switches guilds, could you relay to Creative that having "Riot" the mechanic be in a different guild from the "Lord of Riots" feels very off? Despite the different connotations of the word riot, it feels like a Dragon's Maze sans dragons problem.

I can point it out. Locking specific words to specific guilds because of card names seems like it might cause more problems than it would solve though.

Riot and Spectacle Origins

New 30 Dec 2018 Asked by deg99 46 Comments

Was there any point where Riot was considered for Rackdos and Spectacle was considered for Gruel? That combination would have felt reminiscent of their previous mechanics Bloodthirst and Unleash.

The precursor to Spectacle started as a Gruul mechanic. I’ll tell the whole tale in my preview columns.

Riot Mechanic Curve

New 23 Dec 2018 Asked by jonathan-hecht 35 Comments

will creatures with Riot be on a low curve? because the bigger the creature the least the counter matters rather than haste

As the game progresses, the opponent’s creatures get bigger, so the extra +1/+1 counter might matter.

Favorite Guild Mechanic

New 21 Dec 2018 Asked by circleoferection-blog 35 Comments

With all 10 guild mechanics now known, which is your favourite of the bunch?

Either mentor or riot.

Riot & Keywords

New 21 Dec 2018 Asked by dvoraen 45 Comments

Is Riot a hint that nested keywords might happen more, or are evergreen mechanics considered exempt from that aversion?

Evergreen keywords are considered known enough that we allow them to be nested. Suspend, for instance, granted haste to creatures.

Gruul & Rakdos

New 21 Dec 2018 Asked by gameaholic2k-blog 89 Comments

Why is Riot the Gruul mechanic when Rakdos is the lord of riots?

The Gruul aren’t beneath stealing things. : )

Riot Memory Solution

New 21 Dec 2018 Asked by gsjbuffalo 22 Comments

To combat slight memory issues with haste on riot, could you put a counter on it and say creatures with this type of counter have haste?

Having a counter on it would cause more confusion than it would solve.
