Onslaught

First Set Outside R&D Team

New 19 Jul 2024 Asked by szwanger 1 Comments

To clarify my earlier question: After you joined Wizards, what was the first premier set that you were not officially on an R&D team for? (I assume you contributed in some way to almost every set.)

Technically, Onslaught, although I was responsible for morph being in the set, cycling returning, and pushing the typal theme. : )

Seeding Sets and Block Monsters

New 17 Jul 2024 Asked by msandbot 9 Comments

In Bloomburrow's design am I seeing the needle move slightly back towards "block monsters" (iirc named after the Goblins and other ilk of Onslaught)? It is clear that you are still seeding prior and subsequent sets, but has there been a push to put more strong themed cards together in a set? This might be more noticible with the creature type focus or due to the set ushering in rotation.

The change away from blocks and towards play boosters (two different forces) has allowed us to focus more power of a theme into a single set than we used to.

Journey Through Magic

New 26 May 2024 Asked by theothin 6 Comments

Happy birthday Mark! Magic has been a lot of things to me over the years. I started playing 22 years ago, a few months before Onslaught released, and fell in love with its fascinating mechanics and worlds. I drifted a way after a while, then came back in college to play Commander, where it became a way of regularly spending time with a group of friends. We couldn't keep meeting regularly after graduating, but after getting my current job, I started drafting every week at my LGS, and it quickly became my biggest reason to regularly go somewhere for social reasons rather than just home and work. Thanks for everything you've done for this game!

Thanks for sharing.

Changeling Inspiration Error

New 24 Mar 2024 Asked by razorofartorias 12 Comments

Hi Mark! In your two-part article Looking Back (and I think on a recent podcast too) you mentioned Mistform Ultimus as the inspiration for Changeling, but it's not a legendary creatures from Champions of Kamigawa, it's from Legions (I noticed because I started playing MTG on the Onslaught block).

It was a mistake.

Retro Frame Explanation

New 02 Mar 2024 Asked by africanbradpitt-blog 25 Comments

Hi Mark, Thanks for continuously answering questions! It has become my daily routine to your blog. I've two questions regarding the Heroes of the Realm card Treizeci, Sun of Serra. What exactly is a retro frame? Can a card from e.g Onslaught be considered a retro frame card, or are only new, unique cards with an old border considered retro framed? How would you define the card type Legends? Creatures w the subtype Legend or any legendary card? Thank you!

I believe they mean legendary creatures and are using the old term for it, back when legendary was a supertype. I believe retro frame means any card in that frame including old cards originally printed in it.

Ixalan Crossover Missed

New 12 Feb 2024 Asked by rowanalpha 43 Comments

With the experience of Onslaught and Lorwyn, why didn’t Ixalan have “crossover” cards between the different factions? Even without changeling, I was surprised there weren’t a few cards like a Vampire Pirate creature or a Dinosaur that made some Merfolk tokens.

The creative team asked us not to do it. With 20/20 hindsight, the set needed more glue, so I do wish we’d either push back harder or found another solution.

Keyword Errata Complexity

New 23 Jan 2024 Asked by tybonel13 26 Comments

With keywords being remade, old cards that care about them could become obsolete. Why can't those old cards be erratad to batch the new and old parts? It's barely even a functional errata since they'd work identically as before, but with the new keywords included. Four cards from the Onslaught block cared about creatures with morph. They were changed to batch morph and megamorph as "morph abilities" when Tarkir came out. With disguise as remade morph and the implication that it's replacing morph entirely, why not add it to the batch and have cards care about the batch instead the single keyword? Same with discover and cascade, or how you've said a remade modular is more likely than modular returning. If fan favorite keywords are going to be remade and replaced, could they least be done in a way that's backwards compatible with the old support cards?

It’s a slippery slope. When is a mechanic a redone version and when is it just a tweak? What if we try something and then go back? The errata now possibly prevents us from reprinting the card. Functional errata can cause as many problems as it solves, so we have to be very careful with it.In the case of morph, the vast majority of the cards that interact with it say “face down” or “colorless” and don’t need any errata. This isn’t so say we can’t consider it, but it comes with baggage.

Evolution of Set Names

New 15 Jan 2024 Asked by gnommunist-organizer 62 Comments

something I noticed sorting my bulk: sets were originally called named after words like "Tempest" and "Onslaught", and now they're called verbose things like "Strixhaven: School of Mages" and "The Lost Caverns of Ixalan". do you ever see Magic having another one-word set name (that isn't the name of a new plane)?

Our current philosophy is that the theme is clearly communicated through the name, which makes one-word names harder to use.

Beast Type Future

New 11 Jan 2024 Asked by blowberg 29 Comments

Hi Mark, I recently saw a post about splitring the type Beast i to different animals. Will this mean that you proactively errata anything that mentions beast in their card type or rule text? I have always loved the type beast, being the kindred that I loved the most since onslaught (finally made a Gahiji/ Kaheera edh deck a tear or so ago) and I would miss this kindred a lot.

Beast isn’t going away. We’re just using animal creature types more. Note that the majority of creatures with the type Beast aren’t Earth animals.

Onslaught Typal Themes

Were Onslaught's typal themes not well received? I remember really enjoying it at the time.

Onslaught’s typal themes were popular.

Odd Creature Types Plane

New 08 Sep 2023 Asked by livbrazilian 38 Comments

how likely is that we could get a plane with only odd/less printed creature types? for example: brushwagg; zubera; kavu's ... etc

That’s what I did in Odyssey. It didn’t go well (as we didn’t plan as ahead as we do now and didn’t know Onslaught was going to be typal).I think we like to find spots for new and less used creature types, but as this blog shows there are a lot of existing favorites that need their time in the sun.

Otaria's Identity

New 27 Apr 2023 Asked by jackakim1 36 Comments

What identity would you say Otaria has? Is it a graveyard identity due to Odyssey block or a tribal identity due to Onslaught block?

When we go to Dominaria these days, we’re more focused on Dominaria as a whole world (the history theme) more so than the mechanical elements of pieces of it, so I don’t think it practically matters what Otaria is associated with.

Tombstone Icon Feedback

New 02 Feb 2023 Asked by ghostlygideon 56 Comments

I got introduced to Magic with Onslaught and always found the tombstone icon confusing. Even once someone explained that it didn't do anything itself, was just a reminder for a graveyard effect, I didn't really get it since I have to read the card to know the effect anyway so it struck me more as visual nuisance than helpful reminder. I do find newer symbols like DFC icons helpful though. Do you think it would have been better received if tied to a specific mechanic like flashback?

The tombstone went away interestingly for printing reasons and not audience reaction reasons. It didn’t work with the Eighth Edition frame, so we just made it an Odyssey block thing. The original plan was to make it a permanent part of Magic. I don’t think the message of “this works in the graveyard” was fundamentally flawed.

Creature Type Appreciation

New 01 Feb 2023 Asked by goldstarbubbles1993 21 Comments

Hi Mark! I just wanted to add feedback to the poll about creature types. When I first played as a child, it was with the Onslaught deck products and when I really started playing, it was in Lorwyn. So I love creature type sets :) . That said, I know they’re hard to balance in both limited (it was hard to switch in Ixalan for example) and constructed (Lorwyn Faeries were really strong) so if they’re rarer to treat people like me I get it. I just appreciate that theme being “on the list”

It’s a popular theme. It’s just tricky to build a limited environment around.

Polls Explanation

Would you further explain what you mean with today's polls? Which previous sets would qualify?

I’m Onslaught, Lorwyn, and Ixalan are examples.

Defining a Cycle

New 08 Jan 2023 Asked by shallowerblue 24 Comments

There's a set of five common instants in BRO that each reference a legendary creature in its name: Loran's Escape, Urza's Rebuff, Ashnod's Intervention, Mishra's Onslaught, and Tawnos's Tinkering.

The question is whether this is enough to be considered a cycle. They don't have any mechanical similarities; only three target a creature, only two are modal, etc. Thanks for taking the time to answer!

It’s all boils down to how you want to define “cycle”. If you’re loose enough with you definition, it is.

Morph Mechanic Dynamics

New 21 Dec 2022 Asked by nothingbutland-blog 24 Comments

Do you think one of the difficulties in Morph is if there are not enough pushed cards then everyone just knowing what the card is really undermining the Morph part of the card like Exalted Angel in original Onslaught or Den Protector in Tarkir Block?

That is one of the challenges.

Prototype Design Considerations

New 28 Oct 2022 Asked by nothingbutland-blog 29 Comments

Any concern about Prototype with the many flicker effects in Standard? Just like with Morph back in Onslaught being used to flip high costed creatures.

It’s an issue play design kept in mind when balancing the set.

Retro Frame Options

New 30 Sep 2022 Asked by ghostlygideon 33 Comments

While my start in Onslaught gives me some old frame nostalgia, I've always really hated the look of the original gold frame. Will I be able to get all the new (gold) cards from the commander decks in current frames, or just the face commanders?

The decks themselves are all retro frame. However, you can get modern frame versions with extended-art of the new cards in collector boosters.

Soldier Tribe Support

New 25 Aug 2022 Asked by trifas 40 Comments

Solider was the main White tribe in Onslaught, which was one of the first tribal heavy sets (since Fallen Empires, perhaps). It's nice to see Soldier support once again!

I agree.
