Consensus on Eldrazi Processors

New 01 Jun 2024 Asked by rapicho 71 Comments

Hi mark I saw you respond to a request for future eldrazi sets so i wanted to make one too, if possible please bring back eldrazi processors they were awesome! we so rarely see cards that interact with exile and as more cast from exile etc mechanics get created id just love to see a viable effect like that again. Shout out to wasteland strangler in particular!

Processors weren’t super popular. What did you all think of them (from Battle for Zendikar).

Snow Basics Issue

New 20 Apr 2024 Asked by jjarnone-blog 28 Comments

You've said that R+D thinks snow basics were a mistake. Is that because your deck can play any number of them? Or is it because they also lend themselves to the entirety of the basic land eco-system of stuff like being fetchable by prismatic vista, safe from wasteland/blood moon effects, etc.?

All of the above.

Snow Basics Balance

New 14 Apr 2024 Asked by myheartgoesoontz 25 Comments

Regarding snow basics not causing any balance issues - Arcum's Astrolabe had to be banned in both Modern and Legacy, as it made it too easy to have a manabase that could play any color of spell while not being vulnerable to cards like Blood Moon or Wasteland that traditionally punish "greedy" manabases.

I’m aware.

Land Destruction Vs Ante

New 12 Apr 2024 Asked by doesthewormthinkthatsthewayweall 41 Comments

Is land destruction really as hated as ante? Whole formats, legacy in particular, are nearly built around Wasteland; it would be unreasonable to play legacy and think you aren’t going up against a lot of Wastelands, yet many people play, watch, and enjoy legacy. Whereas ante feels in another realm, no one is playing with ante and no one is asking to.

Land destruction is not hated as much as ante, but that is a *low* bar to clear. It is the most disliked mechanic though that doesn’t involve the possibility of losing ownership of a card.

New Themes on Old Worlds

New 10 Apr 2024 Asked by wehavenotbeenchosen 44 Comments

Hi Mark,
How many players ask for more stuff to be set on existing (or different) planes, but the stuff is different to what the hat of that plane is?
Like the wild wasteland/crime set could have been possibly retooled to fit on New Capenna outside the city.
I really enjoyed that Caverns expanded the world of Ixalan. I would also like to see one of the other continents/new locations on Innistrad, or Ixalan, or Arcavios, or some ancient ruins outside the (former) Hekma on Amonkhet.

We’re experimenting with new mechanical themes on old worlds. It worked well with The Lost Caverns of Ixalan and less well in Murders at Karlov Manor. We’ll do more.

Thunder Junction Clarification

New 11 Jan 2024 Asked by j-waffles 37 Comments

I feel like this might have been asked before, so I apologize if I’m accidentally repeating a question. Is thunder junction the name of the plane, or the name of a place on the plane? Or is it like new Capenna where technically the whole plane is “Capenna” but “new Capenna” is the only part that actually matters because the rest of it is a barren wasteland?

Thunder Junction is the name of the plane.

Repurposing Wasteland Planes

New 30 Nov 2023 Asked by cursedereaper 56 Comments

With omenpaths being a thing could previously depopulated wasteland planes (maybe through Eldrazi attacks) be repopulated? Maybe similar to how Karn made Mirrodin but with a base instead of creating it out of this air made from metal?

It’s possible.

Land Destruction Imbalance

New 16 Feb 2023 Asked by blazinjsin 89 Comments

What do you consider broken about Strip Mine and Wasteland and such? 1 land for 1 land seems balanced enough to me.

I’ll let you in on a little secret. They’re not. Not remotely close.

Designing Dust Bowl

New 15 Feb 2023 Asked by niuttuc 29 Comments

Was Dust Bowl also an attempt to fix Strip Mine after Wasteland? Or just an unrelated design that used some of the same elements?

No, it was another of my lovely “fixes”.

Fixing Broken Cards

New 15 Feb 2023 Asked by dolbuzalo 41 Comments

Are there any broken cards that you’ve printed multiple attempts at fixing?

I made many “fixed” versions of Strip Mine that went on to also be broken (Wasteland being the most famous). In retrospect, I shouldn’t have made any. Okay maybe Ghost Quarter.

Adding Wastes as Land Type

New 14 Jun 2022 Asked by zackdes44 28 Comments

If/when: 1a) Wastes being added as a land type? 1b) adding the type to lands such as - Adarkar Wastes, Encroaching Wastes, Llanowar Wastes, and/or Wasteland?

If. I’m skeptical that will happen.

Semantic Fun with Card Names

New 10 Feb 2022 Asked by llanowarminotaur 41 Comments

Hi Mark, on the question of homonyms, we also have the following pairs: Foul Play and Fowl Play, Gorilla Tactics and Guerilla Tactics, Waste Land and Wasteland, and the only that is neither Un- nor Mystery Booster, Incite and Insight. There may be others, but I only checked card names consisting entirely of real words.

FYIThanks for doing the research.

Cost of Nonbasic Lands

New 19 Jan 2022 Asked by charble 46 Comments

"I simply wouldn’t have made them. I think Magic would be better off overall if they were never part of the game. Same for the original dual lands. I think the game would be improved if there was more of a cost stretching into extra colors." Just responding to this, as in older formats, there is a very great cost for playing nonbasic lands - Wasteland. The very existence of a card like Wasteland changes games to be more fair and cautious on average, and generally increases diversity in gameplay.

The problem exists, so we’ve designed cards to help address it. That doesn’t mean it wouldn’t be better if the problem never happened in the first place.

Strip Mine and Wasteland Query

New 28 Oct 2021 Asked by superfantasticpiratecollection 45 Comments

Do you consider Strip Mine and Wasteland colour pie "breaks" because they give every colour access to cheap LD (which is only in red/green and sometimes black's slice)

I do.

Appreciation for 'Unsanctioned' Game Format

New 16 May 2020 Asked by calamitouscube 39 Comments

I LOVE UNSANCTIONED! Especially Flavor Judge (aka Vorthos's UnCard) since I invented a Format like it during Onslaught! I felt that Remove Soul shouldn't counter Soulless One, Akroma's Vengeance shouldn't destroy her or Ixidor, Lay Waste shouldn't destroy Wasteland, etc. You can choose to play Flavor(or flip a coin)before any game. You all must agree on something making sense(Like Borborygmos wielding Chariot Of Victory as a fist weapon)or it happens normally. Try it, all my play groups love it!

Happy to hear that.

Jamuraa Transformation

New 08 Oct 2017 Asked by theqube2012-deactivated20171226 23 Comments

Sort of going with the last ask but didn’t jamurra go from paradise to wasteland in a certain block?

Much of Jamuraa got phased out before the destruction happened.

Regretful Card Designs

New 22 May 2016 Asked by unseasonably-gay-deactivated201 34 Comments

are there any cards that you designed by yourself that you regret making?

I’ve made my share of broken cards. Has Wasteland resulted in net positive fun in its existence? I’m not sure.
