Rules Distinction in Gift

New 11 Jul 2024 Asked by gridnack 7 Comments

First of all, LOVE Bloomburrow! Especially the otters, frogs, and rabbits. Re: Gift a tapped fishGift is like Haunt in that the instant/sorcery version and permanent version do different things. The spell gifts the fish before other effects. The permanent gifts when it enters. I see this having similar challenges with Haunt. Also the rules text doesn’t specify a 1/1 blue fish. Reminder text isn’t technically part of the rules. Can I gift my opponent other kinds of fish? I see the “gift a tapped fish” as being potentially “rules-challenging”.

Rules text has meaning beyond what’s on the card. Reminder text is telling you relevant information. That is real information that has rules weight. Reminder text just isn’t written in technical Magic templating.

Cipher vs Haunt

New 05 Feb 2024 Asked by blazinjsin 28 Comments

"I think haunt has more potential than cipher as cipher has so much less practical design space." I think haunt has more potential to do weird, cool things, but cipher is easier to just slap on more spells to keep casting

When ran out of blue and black effects in the set that introduced cipher. It has a limited amount of practical design.

Returning Mechanics Potential

New 04 Feb 2024 Asked by spyrohawk 23 Comments

I know they are relatively low on the storm scale, but I really like both Haunt and Cipher. They both feel like you are doing something with your cards that they don't normally do, which I think is really cool. Do you think there's room for them returning somewhere, or similar mechanics being printed?

I think haunt has more potential than cipher as cipher has so much less practical design space.

Mechanic Vocabulary Issue

New 26 Oct 2023 Asked by gridnack 50 Comments

I think Descend X, “if you descended this turn”, and “Fathomless decent”, have a vocabulary issue like Haunt did. They all mean different things. Descend 4 is a condition (similar to delirium/threshold). “If you descended this turn” is an action (similar to “if you milled a permanent or a permanent died” which is “Revolt”). Fathomless descent is neither a condition nor an action; it functions closer to Undergrowth/Chroma as a counting mechanic. As a tiny amount of feedback, using vocabulary in 3 different contexts makes it more difficult to grok (and remember).

Would using three different words for things so mechanically connected not cause more confusion?

Revisiting Haunt Mechanic

New 29 May 2023 Asked by mraptronym 22 Comments

About haunt, point number two (about it functioning when the card is played /dies and then when the target it haunts dies.) Is not a part of the ability, it was just how it was used in Ravnica. Haunt itself just associates a permanent in exile with a creature or other object. It could be used many ways without altering the text of the ability at all. I think affecting something from exile after youe die seems very thematic.

We have spent a lot of time talking about what we can and can’t do with it, so I’m aware. If we do it again, we wouldn’t ‘do it exactly as we did it last time as the data showed that was a mistake.

Haunt Mechanic Complexities

New 28 May 2023 Asked by apo08 31 Comments

What's difficult to understand about Haunt?I've seen a couple of comments on this, and I'm not sure why

There are three main reasons: 1) The mechanic works different on permanents and non-permanents. 2) Its initial ability being something that happens when the card gets played, where the second ability happening when the card dies is non-intuitive.3) It doesn’t do a good job of matching the flavor.

Reviving Haunt Mechanic

New 26 May 2023 Asked by ricardolongo 27 Comments

Do you think haunt could be brought back as a mechanic exclusively on creatures and with simpler effects (e.g., "haunted creature gets +1/+1") instead of the "when the haunted creature dies" triggers?

It’s been explored.

Which do you think is easier to understand haunt or cypher

Cypher.

Haunt's Clarity

New 26 May 2023 Asked by xyronian 32 Comments

Does haunt's storm scale value factor in the fact that the wording now (when X dies, exile it haunting target creature) is much more grokable than it was back in Ravnica? I feel like if it was printed now people would get it.

I still think haunt, as originally executed, is anti-intuitive.

Haunt Ability Issues

New 14 Apr 2023 Asked by insect-glaive 28 Comments

Yesterday you mentioned that Haunt had a lot of issues beyond memory. Could you elaborate? I’m curious as to what other issues you see with the ability.

It has a bunch of issues. The biggest is it isn’t “sticky” meaning it isn’t done in such a way that players can easily remember what it does. This isn’t helped by the fact that creatures and spells with haunt work differently.

Would the technology used with backup to help with memory issues be a way to clean up haunt?

Haunt’s issues go way beyond “memory issues”.

Skulk Mechanic Thoughts

New 18 Feb 2023 Asked by spudvatter 72 Comments

Saw someone talking about Haunt, made me think of Skulk. I loved the mechanic, and the name was perfect. Wish it could’ve worked its way to some usage here and there.

When I created Skulk, I did do thinking I’d designed the new blue/black evergreen creature mechanic. It proved to have a narrower design space than I thought and was harder to use than I expected. Note it’s not off limits as returning, just not up to the bar of being evergreen.

Haunt Mechanic Potential

New 17 Feb 2023 Asked by rowanalpha 42 Comments

"I think the mechanic with the highest potential to the worst original execution is haunt." Since haunt itself just attaches the haunting card to another creature, couldn't it be reused with a different execution pretty easily.

It was in Crimson Vow during vision design for a while.

Redoing Haunt Mechanic

New 17 Feb 2023 Asked by admiralsmash-blog 54 Comments

If you could go back in time and get a do-over on one mechanic, to fix it knowing what you know now, which would you pick?

I think the mechanic with the highest potential to the worst original execution is haunt.

Controlling Exile Dynamics

New 27 Nov 2022 Asked by mraptronym 94 Comments

I think the question about 'exile a card in exile' wants an effect to do things like keep a slow flickered card in exile from returning, stop a suspended card from being cast, or mess with abilities like haunt or imprint. Something like Riftsweeper but without letting things out of exile. I am not sure any elegant text would do this though.

My only solution that’s worked. : )

Cut Modern Horizons Designs

New 05 Sep 2022 Asked by vereendood 58 Comments

Hello Mark, I'd like to add to the pile of requests a cycle of cards that combine two abilities of a given ravnicas guild. Eg: graft + adapt, afterlife + haunt, bloodlust + riot...Most likely on a supplemental set, given the ensuing complexity.Thank you !

I designed these for original Modern Horizons, but they got cut.

Choosing Type for Faceless One

New 07 Jun 2022 Asked by mmonkeyfeet 36 Comments

As faceless one is a creature, but without a real creature type, was it ever a consideration to allow you to select a creature type? It would have allowed haunted one to work with less represented tribes. "Green, Skeleton + Haunted One would have been cool"

I don’t believe that was ever considered.

Concerns about Haunt Mechanic

New 19 Mar 2022 Asked by samuel-angel 43 Comments

Why is haunt considered a mistake? Was it hard to keep track?

It has a quality I call “unsticky” where the vast majority of players can’t remember what it does. The fact that it works differently on creatures than it does on spells doesn’t help. Also, it scored very poorly in market research.

Possibility of Haunt Reappearance

New 11 Mar 2022 Asked by phantomarcadianae 40 Comments

Will we ever see Haunt again? I wasn’t around when it first came into magic, but I built a haunt theme in my cube and it feels super cool. Especially with the Playtest Kaya card!! (High fives to who designed her that card is super cool)

Haunt had a lot of issues (the biggest being that creature and spells worked differently and it was “unsticky”), but maybe the right set with the right tweaks, it’s possible. I’ll admit, I’m not super optimistic.
