Outlaws of Thunder Junction Drafting

New 26 Jul 2024 Asked by mrpopogod 11 Comments

When you were creating Outlaws of Thunder Junction, where you ever concerned that when people talked about drafting OTJ that some older players might be worried about seeing UG madness?

: )For those non-old timers out there. Blocks were often nicknamed with the first letter of each set in the block. So Odyssey/Torment/Judgment draft was often called OTJ. One its major draft archetype was green/blue madness.

Biased Towards Single Color

New 21 Jul 2024 Asked by anactualcaveman 6 Comments

Hi mark, would you guys ever consider doing supplemental sets biased towards a single color again, like torment?

It causes major play design problems (we learned that from doing Torment), and I am skeptical of us doing it again.

Returning to Torment Set

New 06 Jul 2024 Asked by godkingjinping 4 Comments

When do you anticipate a return to torment

If you asking a return to a set where colors aren’t balanced, I’m skeptical ever. It causes a lot of balance issues, especially with limited formats.

Color Imbalance in Sets

New 20 Apr 2024 Asked by thetitan555 34 Comments

If/when: A draftable set with an intentional imbalance of colors of cards printed? Say, 30% white cards.

If. We did it in Torment (more black cards, less white and green) and Judgment (the opposite), and learned that it warps limited too much.

Potential for Blue/Red Set

New 08 Apr 2024 Asked by trifas 24 Comments

Torment leaned Black, Judgement leaned Green/White. Before you realized this didn't work well, was there ever talk about a Blue/Red set? Perhaps for Odyssey since it was the other set in this block.

If it had worked, we would have tried over things. It didn’t, so we stopped thinking about it.

Color Absence in Draft

New 08 Apr 2024 Asked by embergeos 27 Comments

If/when draft set with one or more colors absent?

If. Torment/Judgment explored having an imbalance of colors and our experience from making those two sets discouraged us from repeating it. I’m even more skeptical that we’d abandon a color or colors.

Color-Focused Set Hesitation

New 26 Mar 2024 Asked by deathworld12 24 Comments

can i request a set similar to torment/judgment that has heavy focus on one or two colors?

Torment and Judgment taught us to be wary of doing it again. It’s a huge amount of work, messes up limited, and didn’t even move the needle of making players more excited about the set.I never say never, so maybe there will come a set where doing it will be important, but it’s a high bar to clear.

Nightmare Fun Fact

New 16 Mar 2024 Asked by billcry 18 Comments

Hey Mark, wanted to see if I could use my “Birthday Trivia Card” to get a fun fact about nightmares (the creature type)

They are one of only a handful of creatures to ever get a new mechanic centered around them (in Torment). Happy Birthday!

Slivers Return Speculation

New 29 Feb 2024 Asked by dracon069 34 Comments

I got introduced to Slivers in 2014 when they returned to torment everyone and quickly fell in love with them. Now that it's been 10 years since we last saw them in standard and no longer have blocks, will we potentially see them again as a handful of new cards? Potentially finding the plane where they originated from?

Maybe. : )

Everlasting Torment Interaction

New 18 Jan 2024 Asked by danflapjax 24 Comments

Un-rules question: what happens if Everlasting Torment is on the battlefield and one casts Pie-roclasm? Does every non-clown creature get π -1/-1 counters???

Creatures can only get a whole number of -1/-1 counters, so they get three.

Avoiding Color Weighting

New 28 Nov 2023 Asked by trifas 35 Comments

Torment leaned Black, Judgement leaned GW, was there any talk about leaning Odyssey UR?

No, Torment and Judgment taught us the dangers of doing it, and we’re are unlikely to color weight again.

Mana Distribution Sets

New 31 Aug 2023 Asked by wildcardgamez 49 Comments

Do you think you'd ever do another group of sets with uneven mana distribution like torment and judgment?

It’s unlikely. Once burned, twice shy. It just messes up limited balance too much.

Shadow Mechanic in Standard

New 17 May 2023 Asked by szwanger 29 Comments

For the discussion about bringing shadow back into Standard, the format has previously included fairly efficient creatures with "can't block" and "can't be blocked" (Tormented Soul, 1/1 for 1 mana; and Inkfathom Infiltrator, 2/1 for 2 mana) which is fairly similar to shadow. Neither was played much in Standard, and in Limited they were played sometimes but didn't break anything.

Just because we’re willing to do one (similar) card, doesn’t mean we necessarily want to do a whole mechanic of something.

Favorite Card Revelation

New 14 Feb 2023 Asked by gevth 60 Comments

I asked ChatGPT “what is Mark Rosewater’s favourite card he designed?”. You’ll need to train it a little more before it can take over Blogatog.

Mark Rosewater, the head designer for the trading card game Magic: The Gathering, has designed many cards over the years, and he has mentioned several as his favorites. One card that he has specifically mentioned as his favorite design is "Psychatog."

"Psychatog" is a blue/black creature card that was first printed in the Torment expansion set in 2002. It has a unique ability that allows its controller to discard cards from their hand to increase its power and toughness, making it a formidable threat on the battlefield. The card has been a favorite of many players over the years due to its power and versatility.

Rosewater has stated that he loves "Psychatog" because it is a great example of a card that combines different elements of the game in a creative way. He enjoys the challenge of designing cards that are both mechanically interesting and flavorful, and he feels that "Psychatog" is a perfect example of a card that succeeds on both levels.

I didn’t know when I produced all my writing that I was helping train my successor. : )EDIT: Also, while I did design Psychatog and generally like its design, it is not my favorite card I designed. That’s Doubling Season.

Madness Mechanic Insights

New 28 Jul 2022 Asked by selein 33 Comments

May I request some Birthday Trivia about my favourite mechanic Madness and where it is on the storm scale nowadays? I learnt to play with cards from Torment and Time Spiral and I was wowed by how fun and intuitive it is. It was really fun in MH2 and I look forward to its next outing.

Madness is still an 8. I think it’s the highest thing on the Storm Scale to return. Happy Birthday!

Prevalence of One Color

New 29 Jun 2022 Asked by deathcloud86 25 Comments

If/When another set like Torment, where one color is much more prevalent than the other colors. That was a fun dynamic then balanced out by Judgement later

If. It plays havoc with balancing limited, and wasn’t a particularly popular theme.

Returning Nightmare Horrors

New 15 May 2022 Asked by riverofmolecules 27 Comments

Could Nightmare Horrors from Torment return (maybe like a throwback in a Masters set) or is that mechanic too white now?

It’s pretty white.

Returning to Torment/Judgment Set Format

New 15 May 2022 Asked by mysterio797 20 Comments

Hello Mark, do you think you guys will do sets like Torment or Judgment ever again where the ASFAN of a particular color(s) is higher than the rest?

Highly skeptical. It really messes up limited.

Superhero Set Color Distribution

New 14 Dec 2021 Asked by djscrub 38 Comments

Wouldn't it be a problem for a superhero set that nearly all of them are part white? The other colors all have representation, but it would be a bit of a Torment situation, wouldn't it?

It’s an issue. There are plenty of superheroes that have other colors that are more of a focus than white.

Influence on Innistrad

New 23 Aug 2021 Asked by kandykidzero 44 Comments

Is it fair to say that "Odyssey" block had influences on what to do better in Innistrad? They both had flashback, black creatures were horrors and nightmares, threshold mechanics could "transform" creatures, "Torment" was heavily black and had the 'Possessed' cycle, and the third set "Judgement" swung to WG with Humans and Spirits working together?

Innistrad came about because of a discussion I had with Brady Dommermuth when Odyssey came out. He noted that the creative didn’t really match what the mechanics were doing. He said it should have been a gothic horror set. My response was, “We have to do a gothic horror set.”
