Full Art Lands' Return

New 27 Jul 2024 Asked by the-firefletcher 1 Comments

Hi Mark,Why did it take so long for full-art lands to make a comeback after original zendikar? What changed to make you want to do them for almost every set now?

A change in philosophy in how we wanted to use them.

Animal Appearance in Duos

New 17 Jul 2024 Asked by pvonvil 5 Comments

From what I can gather all the duos, like Bakersbane Duo are in shards: Bakersbane duo is green but fits in a squirrel (bg) or raccoon deck (rg), making it a basically a Jund card. The black cards are an exception: Glivedive duo is in a wedge, Mardu (bat wb and lizard rb). Presumably the other black one will be squirrel (bg) and rat (ub)My question is: why? Is the pattern of shards intentional? Is the deviation to one color having wedges intentional?

The only guideline was each animal appeared in just two duos.

Appreciating the Otters in Magic

New 16 Jul 2024 Asked by magicalotterlady 11 Comments

Please pass my thanks to whomever decided otters should be a thing in Magic.I've carried an otter plushie around with me to events through my entire Magic playing career, so almost 15 years. Ive had an otter along for the ride from pretty much every FNM to PTQs to traveling everywhere I could drive within 8 hours to play Legacy for several years or even trips to the other side of the US for large events a couple of times.I was screeching and immediately tried building an otter deck when Lutri and Theving Otter came out with Ikoria. I was literally babbling with joy at the otters in Wilds of Eldraine for MONTHS. To say I'm beside myself with excitement for Bloomburrow would almost be an understatement. My favorite thing to build or play in Magic are tribal-based decks. I built an angel one as my second ever deck (Shards of Alara/Zendikar standard) so I could teach my mom to play before she passed. I was known for a knight/Sword of _____ and _____ deck for years. I've even played Merfolk and Tribal Lightning Bolt (burn) decks a time or two. But I can now have my beloved otters as a theme for my deck.Literally the only way that it could be more perfect for me would have been if there was an Otter Knight named Rora for my little tournament companion. So thank you for making my love for Magic even stronger by adding otters.

I like making otter people happy. : )

Bloomburrow Thematic Construction

New 15 Jul 2024 Asked by shitstormwastaken 0 Comments

You've said you've been seeding the Bloomburrow creature types for a few sets now. Was the decision to make Aclazotz a Bat God, and thus introduce bats and bat themes to the white/black Ixalan vampires, at all influenced by the Bloomburrow bats? There are a lot of pretty obvious similarities (colors, animal type, religion) between the two archetypes across the sets.

If you see any relevant animals in the last Magic “year”, we were very aware of their Bloomburrow needs when we added them to files.

Bats in Bloomburrow Lore

New 14 Jul 2024 Asked by weevil-mastermind 20 Comments

I’d like to say thank you for not making the bats in Bloomburrow vampires. Or at least not making vampirism their main thing in the lore. Vampire bats are cool but overdone considering only 3 out of over 1,400 bat species drink blood (and those 3 species of vampire bay are only found in Central America and South America.)

In Bloomburrow, the Bats are the clergy.

Unpacking Bat Card Lifegain Mechanic

Do Bats have something more interesting going on than lifegain?

Their play pattern is intermixed with gaining and spending life, but there’s a lot more nuance to it.

Possible A+B Exile Mechanic

New 08 Jul 2024 Asked by kuldothaphoenix 1 Comments

could we see an A+B mechanic designed around A exiling cards and B getting cards exiled with mechanic A back? Kinda like an inverted version of the processor setup from BFZ where you do it for your own benefit?

We need to be careful that a mechanic can’t get back cards that were exiled by a card where the intent was it wasn’t to return.

Possibility of Original Worlds

New 04 Jul 2024 Asked by skagerrakgodofdarkness 10 Comments

How likely are we to see a new world that is truly original? Not to disparage all the awesome new worlds we’ve had, it’s just that they’re often “magics take on X”. I miss worlds like mirrodin, alara, and zendikar which have an identity different that just “magics take on this or that genre”

I’m glad we hid our inspirations better on Mirrodin, Alara, and Zendikar. : )

Challenges of Variety and Consistency

New 03 Jul 2024 Asked by arixordragc 129 Comments

"From a big picture, Magic excels at creating variety and does poorly at consistency."I would argue that historically, it's done well at both. Variety and consistency are not opposing concepts; you don't need to sacrifice one for the sake of the other. Ravnica, Theros, Zendikar and Bloomburrow are all very different places, but they're easy to see side by side. You could take a character from each of those planes and put them in a story together, and they would all be very distinctive, but none would feel out of place. Put someone from Duskmourn in that lineup, and they'd stick out like a Ghostbuster in Middle Earth. The complaints aren't from people who, as you seem to be implying, dislike variety. They just think that even in a very varied setting, you can still have cohesiveness, and Duskmourn's aesthetic breaks the cohesiveness that Magic has actually done very well at previously even with its great variety (there are other reasons people may dislike it as well of course, but that's most relevant to this point).

There are people who thought Ravnica *did* break the mold of what Magic was. A city? Core fantasy is not urban. There are people who thought Theros *did* break the mold of what Magic was. Theros borrowed too heavily from an existing mythology. Magic is about creating its own things, not being influenced by non-fantasy real world sources. There are people who thought Zendikar *did* break the mold of what Magic was. It leaned to heavily into adventure tropes and not enough on basic fantasy. There are people who thought Bloomburrow *did* break the mold. It was too cutesy and didn’t have the gravitas of a real Magic set. The idea that the thing you felt went too far is the actual thing that went too far is what everyone believes when we stretch to a place that they aren’t comfortable with. But that place varies from person to person. And more importantly, it changes as the game adapts. Innistrad was once the world that went a step too far, and now it’s the thing Duskmourn is being compared against as the sign that we went too far.Magic has since its beginning changed and adapted. And it’s always pushing into new territory because that’s what it means to change and adapt. That doesn’t mean every person is going to agree with everything we do. It’s fine to not like something, but please be aware that for each player who felt we went too far, there are many others excited by what we’re doing. My point when I say “we do poor at consistency” is that there’s no definitive dividing point. There’s not a clear line in the sand where this side “is Magic” and this side “isn’t Magic”. That line varies person to person. The reason we have 27,000+ cards is so that each person can focus on “what Magic is” for themselves.

Duskmourn Set Appreciation

New 29 Jun 2024 Asked by renkilledakirakurusu 2 Comments

Heya mark,I admit that initially I was leery of duskmourn; as a top down concept, I didn't really buy that a haunted house could be a concept for a whole set. After reading the planar guide, I've never been more happy to be wrong. The House is such a cool take on the subject, and as someone who's always preferred the more mind bending sorts of horror it's shot the plane up to easily the one I've been most excited to explore since the return to kamigawa and I think all the way to original zendikar before that. I know you're getting some mixed opinions now but I wanted to pass on that to at least one player the creative team absolutely belted it out of the park on this one so far

Glad you’re happy.

Impact of Negative Player Feedback

New 05 Jun 2024 Asked by boymeetsanime 3 Comments

Hi Mark! When you track the metrics of how well, or poorly, something is received, does the nature of the metric affect its likelihood of returning? e.g. with the Processors from BFZ, would "players didn't think they had a strong enough pay off" be more likely to risk another try compared to "players found ability confusing" or "players found there wasn't enough exiling in sealed/standard"?

We do take into account why we think players didn’t like something, but player disapproval of something in its first outing does lessen the chance of a second outing.

Consensus on Eldrazi Processors

New 01 Jun 2024 Asked by rapicho 71 Comments

Hi mark I saw you respond to a request for future eldrazi sets so i wanted to make one too, if possible please bring back eldrazi processors they were awesome! we so rarely see cards that interact with exile and as more cast from exile etc mechanics get created id just love to see a viable effect like that again. Shout out to wasteland strangler in particular!

Processors weren’t super popular. What did you all think of them (from Battle for Zendikar).

Faeries on Zendikar or Innistrad

I want to object to the assertion that there's no faeries on Zendikar or Innistrad. Just because you don't see the fae doesn't mean that they're not there :)

A fair point.

Eldrazi Faerie's Plane of Origin

New 29 May 2024 Asked by missmoo77 47 Comments

With the full spoiler, there's now an Eldrazi Faerie that has been corrupted by Emrakul. There's no Faeries on Innistrad or Zendikar though, so do you know if this faerie is from another plane or is this more of a non-canon "this is cool so we did it" moment?

The Eldrazi did visit other planes before Zendikar.

Considering Two Set Blocks

New 23 May 2024 Asked by roborabbitart 0 Comments

So I understand that three set blocks tend to wear people out, but has there been any consideration for two set blocks? I've been feeling more and more over the years that a lot of recent mechanics just don't get enough support because they're often one-and-done, and it'll be a miracle to ever see them again. It also feels like recent settings don't get fleshed out and don't get time to breathe, save Eldraine which got revisited surprisingly quickly.

Battle for Zendikar, Shadows over Innistrad, Kaladesh, Amonkhet, and Ixalan were all two set blocks.

Quad-Color Commander Design

New 05 May 2024 Asked by between-panels-blog 11 Comments

Hello!

Last time I wrote, I asked about Planar Chaos, and whether design might go back to something like that with the color pie. Thank you for your response. I can appreciate how it was a novel idea back then, but you do it more now in small ways over time.

My next question also has to do with color.

Like a lot of people, I love commander. I've created a challenge for myself. I'm trying to build a deck in every color combination.

I finally finished colorless, which was a challenge I've been afraid of since I started playing in Alara. Now I'm looking at four color commanders.

I have Omnath. I love Omnath. Landfall's been a favorite, since Zendikar is close to my heart.

And oh. There's Atraxa. Atraxa excites me. I think I'll focus her on poison counters.

But then there's the other combinations. After the Nephilim in Guildpact, most call them Glint, (no white) Dune, (no blue) and Witch (no red).

I see Breya, Saskia, and Yidris. They're awesome cards, and Yidris excites me somewhat. But it feels like a very tiny box that's been built many, many times before.

And those three cards are really it for those three color groupings. There's a whole bunch of representation for WURG especially with Doctor Who UB, and WUBG has the two Atraxa. But the other three don't get much.

Partner is an option I've considered. But at a glance, it seems a bit forced.

Do you think design will do more with the quad-color groupings? Would a set like Alara or Tarkir be possible, but with quad-color tribes? Or does that overcomplicate design too much?

Four-color legendary cards are in a weird place. We don’t want to make them such that people are just using them to play more colors in Commander, so it means we have to be very focused in what they’re doing, and finding a home for such a design is tricky.

Allies Return Possibility

New 05 May 2024 Asked by anexhaustedsloth-blog 5 Comments

Hey Mark, I really like Allies, especially those from the first and second Zendikar blocks. Is there any possibility that we will see any more like these on Zendikar or other planes in the future?

I think Allies, as a typal component, will return one day.

Bar Assembly Reason

An assassin, a rogue, a mercenary, a warlock, and a pirate walk into a bar. What are they doing there together?

Having a secret batch meeting. Zendikar has similar party parties.
