Ubiquitous Tokens Expectation

New 21 Jul 2024 Asked by gcu-sovereign 4 Comments

Is the Ubiquitous Token of a plane something we should expect from visit to visit? Like, how Capenna has its gw citizens, Innistrad has black decayed zombies, LTR had orc armies [applicable to some silmarillion-based visit, I guess]I was looking at the Fish tokens in Bloomburrow and Mercenaries in otj and wondering if those were also more Worldbuilding statements or not.

It’s a mechanical tool that adds flavor, and something we definitely use when shaping a set.

Spiderman's Colors and Marvel Partnership

New 13 Jul 2024 Asked by winteristhebestship 8 Comments

What colors would Spiderman be? I'm curious. (Also please convince Disney to do a Marvel UB 🙏)

I think base Spider-Man is green/white with some blue. Also, I have some good news for you. We’ve already announced a multi-set Universes Beyond partnership with Marvel.

Color Coding in UB Cards

New 13 Jul 2024 Asked by theadonalsium 12 Comments

How much does in-universe coloring affect design of UB cards? For example, someone like Green Lantern is likely red or white due to their determination and willpower. However, their in-universe theme is very green, for obvious reasons. How do you reconcile these differences?

Green Lantern is a bad example. The character *is* green/white. (Willpower is green, not red, plus the ring chooses you.) Spider-man is a better example. He’s not blue/red. Characters in Universes Beyond don’t have to match the color of their outfit.

Tricolor Card Costing Pattern

New 10 Jun 2024 Asked by blind42-blog 36 Comments

If two-mana three-color cards became a regular occurrence, would they be more likely to cost both hybrids with their central color, or their central color plus either of their allies/enemies? E.g. for Bant: blue/white + green/white vs. white + green/blue

One locked color with a hybrid mana of two other colors is easier to design than two different hybrid cards with an overlapping color.

Trivia on Enchantress Decks

New 27 Apr 2024 Asked by jjarnone-blog 30 Comments

I invoke the right of birthday trivia. My favorite deck in commander is GW Enchantress. Any particular trivia on anything related to Enchantress?

Enchantresses have become pretty tied to drawing cards for playing enchantments. Both monogreen and monowhite have issues doing it alone, so we’ve been pushing more enchantresses into green/white. Happy Birthday!

Potential for Blue/Red Set

New 08 Apr 2024 Asked by trifas 24 Comments

Torment leaned Black, Judgement leaned Green/White. Before you realized this didn't work well, was there ever talk about a Blue/Red set? Perhaps for Odyssey since it was the other set in this block.

If it had worked, we would have tried over things. It didn’t, so we stopped thinking about it.

Planes Altered by Invasion

New 06 Apr 2024 Asked by obazervazi 58 Comments

I quite like how the heavily the planes have been affected and changed by the invasion. Eldraine had an extremely fairy tale solution to the invasion with extremely fairy tale complications, Selesnya of all guilds goes on a homicidal rampage, Thunder Junction is only populated at all thanks to the Omenpaths. Planes have been changing is ways totally appropriate to each plane, but are still quite different from what they once were.

I do think the change is there. Maybe it’s not as easy to see if you only play the cards and don’t read the stories.

Origami Mechanic Expansion

New 02 Apr 2024 Asked by peggle2speedrun 66 Comments

As much as I love the new 'Origami' mechanic, limited really gets to feel samey when every-other game ends when somebody folds their whole board into cranes to swing in. I know you cant say much... But with the keyword officially being evergreen moving forward, is there anything in the pipeline to encourage other play patterns?

Crane is just the white/blue archetype.Other options:Blue/black - Fortune TellerBlack/red - HatRed/green - SwanGreen/white - Lotus flowerWhite/black - ButterflyBlue/red - Water balloonBlack/green - Masu boxRed/white - HeartGreen/blue - Jumping frog

Mana Cost Ordering

New 19 Mar 2024 Asked by aork14 52 Comments

"Hi Mark, in mana costs, for mixing hybrid mana and non hybrid (and mixing different hybrid mana symbols too like Leyline of the Guildpact) is there an official order that you guys go by?"ft
As far as I can tell, it just follows the normal mana color order, with the hybrid mana symbols placed in-between their respective colors to "connect" them, like in compleated Tamiyo the phyrexian hybrid mana was in-between its two colors. So like, as an example, if there were a hypothetical bant card with one of each color and then a hybrid White/Blue and a hybrid Green/White, it would be templated as G g/w W w/b B

That sounds correct.

Hybrid Mana Concept

New 13 Mar 2024 Asked by tsukinoinaba 25 Comments

apologies if you've been asked something like this before, but if or when: lands that tap for a single mana that counts as two or more colors? what I mean by that is, it only produces a single mana, but it counts functionally as multiple colors, for the sake of spells that care about what color(s) of mana you spent on it. as an example, suppose a spell cost 3G, but cares if you spent white for a bonus. you could use 3 wastes and one land that taps for a hybrid G/W mana and still get the bonus.

I think that would provide more confusion than viable design space.

Bloomburrow Animal Guessing

New 24 Feb 2024 Asked by blaze-1013 89 Comments

Can I guess the animals for each color in Bloomburrow? WU: Birds, UB: Bats, BR: Lizards, RG: Raccoons, GW: Rabbits, WB: Badgers, UR: Otters, BG: Squirrels, RW: Mice, and GU: Frogs

Everyone is free to guess. Here’s what I said in today’s panel. 1) There are ten two-color pairs.2) Every one is a different animal. 3) Red/white is Mice.4) We’ve seeded some cards in previous sets.5) I said that Rabbits and Frogs were two of the animals.I won’t tell you if you’re correct, but I enjoy seeing guesses.

Hybrid Color Design Space

New 15 Feb 2024 Asked by anonleoleo 24 Comments

Which two-color combination has the most overlap (or, phrased another way, which hybrid color pair has the most design space that's purely hybrid?)?

Either black/red or green/white.

Hybrid Mana Order

New 10 Feb 2024 Asked by nite0304 38 Comments

Hey Mark, question about the hybrid mana symbols. What is the criteria for some colors to sometimes be above others? For example, White is above Black in the Orzhov hybrid mana, so its not alphabetical order, but its below red in the Boros hybrid mana, so its not WUBRG order either.White and Blue are above three mana colors, Black and Red are above 2, and Green is below them all. So what's the criteria?

The hybrid symbols follow how we write mana symbols in mana costs. Each color starts two and ends two: WUUBBRRGGWWBURBGRWGU

Kermit's Color Identity

New 21 Dec 2023 Asked by j-waffles 40 Comments

Re:Kermit is green/whiteIs there anything about Kermit that makes him green aside from being a frog? His whole character to my understanding is pretty much just that he’s a really swell guy, which is pretty white

His core is about community which is exactly the overlap of green and white.
