Outlaws of Thunder Junction Drafting

New 26 Jul 2024 Asked by mrpopogod 11 Comments

When you were creating Outlaws of Thunder Junction, where you ever concerned that when people talked about drafting OTJ that some older players might be worried about seeing UG madness?

: )For those non-old timers out there. Blocks were often nicknamed with the first letter of each set in the block. So Odyssey/Torment/Judgment draft was often called OTJ. One its major draft archetype was green/blue madness.

Cephalid and Aven Timing

New 12 Jun 2024 Asked by myheartgoesoontz 19 Comments

It seems odd that you cite Aven as an example of a humanoid-animal race that uses the animal creature type, to show that this is a thing you've been doing since the late 90s and you're just norming older stuff like Cephalid, when the first Cephalid and the first Aven were released in the same set (Odyssey).

Advances often slowly happen over time. It’s possible to do something new in one part of a set while doing something old in another.

Creature Power Creep

New 23 May 2024 Asked by nothingbutland-blog 4 Comments

In respose to power creep. Power creep doesn't only exist at the top end of cards. Yes design hopefully will not print more powerful versions of the power 9 of Tinker, but power creep at common and uncommon cards is very real and has made a huge impact on limited and kitchen table magic games especially on creatures(there is no one who can say todays creatures do not outclass creatures from Alpa all the way through Odyssey). Now some of this power creep was needed and some pushed into dangerous areas but ultimately power creep is real.

Creatures have gotten better because creatures in the early days were very weak. So yes, the power curve for creatures has gone up over time. The thing you’re describing isn’t power creep. It’s the nature of how non-rotating formats work. In any group of cards, there’s a top tier. As you add more cards to the system, it becomes harder to make it into that top tier. Let’s say each set adds a few cards to it. With time those new cards will displace old cards.

Phyrexian Invasion Feedback

New 23 May 2024 Asked by kippermydog 22 Comments

I'd like to add my support to the voices disappointed by the lack of fallout shown from the Phyrexian invasion... of Dominaria. I just checked the cards in Odyssey block, and there's no ruined buildings, no dead Phyrexians, nothing! Sure, the block's entire story comes about as a result of Karn gaining a spark, but I was looking forward to a year of mourning families and civil construction projects. All I got instead was a cool story about pit fighters wrestling over a mysterious artifact.

Targeting Mechanic Trends

New 12 May 2024 Asked by carvedocean 20 Comments

We've seen a slight increase in cards that care about being targeted recently after what I feel has been a fairly long absence (From ~3/year since Odyssey block to ~5/year since KHM). Since there seems to be some design space for this mechanic (even at common with Illusory Servant effects and Cactarantula) do you think we might see a greater focus on these kinds of effects in future sets?

It will ebb and flow. It’s a natural part of the game we can care about.

Flavor Text Experience

New 07 May 2024 Asked by fanfactorpodcast 24 Comments

May I request for you to be in charge of flavor text for a premier set?

Been there, done that. I was in charge of flavor text for Odyssey (and Unglued and Unhinged, but those weren’t premier sets).

Card Name Changes in Graveyard

New 02 May 2024 Asked by myheartgoesoontz 29 Comments

"This card's name is Dragon's Approach in the graveyard" - There actually are two cards like this already from the Odyssey block, Diligent Farmhand counts as a Muscle Burst and Pardic Firecat counts as a Flame Burst for the purposes of those effects. I"f [card name] is in a graveyard, [other card]'s effect counts it as an [other card]"

Potential for Blue/Red Set

New 08 Apr 2024 Asked by trifas 24 Comments

Torment leaned Black, Judgement leaned Green/White. Before you realized this didn't work well, was there ever talk about a Blue/Red set? Perhaps for Odyssey since it was the other set in this block.

If it had worked, we would have tried over things. It didn’t, so we stopped thinking about it.

Odyssey Duel Land Cycle

New 25 Mar 2024 Asked by wogua 43 Comments

If it hasn’t been mentioned, let me note that my favorite thing about the Fallout decks is that we’ve completed the Odyssey dual land cycle. Well done!

Sometimes it takes a little time. : )

Innistrad Trivia

New 28 Feb 2024 Asked by halfway-decent-cartographer 21 Comments

Hello, it’s my birthday today! I’ve always had a soft spot for Innistrad, and wanted to ask for any sort of niche lore or trivia about the world of Innistrad! Thanks for working on this game, keep up the great work!

Innistrad was inspired by Odyssey having a creative that didn’t match the graveyard theme. Brady and I talked about a gothic horror set. I liked it and said I would try to get it made. It took a while.Happy Birthday!

Aven Trivia

New 11 Feb 2024 Asked by cursedereaper 36 Comments

Hey Mark. Trying again on my birthday trivia.I liked Avens ever since I saw the art of Aven Fisher. And I really enjoyed Francisco as a legendary cockatoo. He has a similar expression to my late parrot. Yes also once walked around with a (dull) knife 😅Can I get a trivia on avens, Fransisco or legendary birds in MTG?PS: I love to play Fransisco simply as a reminder to my parrot who spent a lot of time on my shoulder when I first started MTG.

When Avens first appeared, in Odyssey, I made sure every one was Bird with a Class type, mostly Soldier, as I was trying hard to get more creature types on the card type line. Happy Belated Birthday!

Odyssey Design Lesson

New 01 Feb 2024 Asked by 3-slugcat-pilots-7-ornithopters 50 Comments

What did you learn in Odyssey that makes it such a gut reaction?

I did something to prove that I could (turn card advantage on its ear) rather than to make the best game experience for the audience. It was a big lesson for me about the main role of a game designer.

Instructive Design Process

Of all of the sets you've been involved in making, from which set design process did you learn the most?

My gut response is Odyssey, but I learn from them all.

Upside-Down Art Erratum

New 10 Jan 2024 Asked by mistereff 68 Comments

Ok, I gotta know. What was the name of the card with upside-down art you talked about on your Designing To Art podcast? I checked all the burn spells in Mirage, and a bunch of cards with Avens in them, and I couldn’t find a card that matched your description

That’s because I named the wrong set. It was Odyssey, not Mirage. Here’s the card:

Avoiding Color Weighting

New 28 Nov 2023 Asked by trifas 35 Comments

Torment leaned Black, Judgement leaned GW, was there any talk about leaning Odyssey UR?

No, Torment and Judgment taught us the dangers of doing it, and we’re are unlikely to color weight again.

Potential Spikes Return

New 28 Nov 2023 Asked by casofsas 38 Comments

While Odyssey may be the Spike-iest set, Exodus has the most Spikes. What are the chances of more Spikes being printed in the future?

Spikes add a lot of board complexity. I think they’re most likely to return in something like a Modern Horizons set that has a higher complexity level.

Spike-Focused Sets

New 28 Nov 2023 Asked by lookingupanddown 37 Comments

What sets/blocks do you think were made with the most focus towards Spikes?

Odyssey was the spike-iest block we ever made.

Literature-Inspired Sets

New 29 Sep 2023 Asked by mtgdawn 50 Comments

In the wake of Secret Lair Princess Bride, may I request sets directly based on classical literature/philosophy? Homer and Shakespeare (with original Ancient Greek or Elizabethan English cards!) comes to mind. By the way, how much of the Odyssey block is inspired by the original Odyssey?

The question is: is there a large enough audience for those products? If yes, we’d definitely consider making them. Odyssey’s design was not at all influenced by The Odyssey. The set wasn’t even named until it was out of design.

Odd Creature Types Plane

New 08 Sep 2023 Asked by livbrazilian 38 Comments

how likely is that we could get a plane with only odd/less printed creature types? for example: brushwagg; zubera; kavu's ... etc

That’s what I did in Odyssey. It didn’t go well (as we didn’t plan as ahead as we do now and didn’t know Onslaught was going to be typal).I think we like to find spots for new and less used creature types, but as this blog shows there are a lot of existing favorites that need their time in the sun.

Card Ability Indicators

New 02 Aug 2023 Asked by smbmarvin02 24 Comments

Do you think cards would benefit from having an indicator of some sort for abilities that can be activated when the card is in your hand or in the graveyard? I know old Odyssey cards used to have a graveyard indicator, but I mean more on the ability itself, since cards can have multiple abilities that work in different zones.

It’s just a matter of keeping scope creep on symbols.
