Quad-Color Commander Design

New 05 May 2024 Asked by between-panels-blog 11 Comments

Hello!

Last time I wrote, I asked about Planar Chaos, and whether design might go back to something like that with the color pie. Thank you for your response. I can appreciate how it was a novel idea back then, but you do it more now in small ways over time.

My next question also has to do with color.

Like a lot of people, I love commander. I've created a challenge for myself. I'm trying to build a deck in every color combination.

I finally finished colorless, which was a challenge I've been afraid of since I started playing in Alara. Now I'm looking at four color commanders.

I have Omnath. I love Omnath. Landfall's been a favorite, since Zendikar is close to my heart.

And oh. There's Atraxa. Atraxa excites me. I think I'll focus her on poison counters.

But then there's the other combinations. After the Nephilim in Guildpact, most call them Glint, (no white) Dune, (no blue) and Witch (no red).

I see Breya, Saskia, and Yidris. They're awesome cards, and Yidris excites me somewhat. But it feels like a very tiny box that's been built many, many times before.

And those three cards are really it for those three color groupings. There's a whole bunch of representation for WURG especially with Doctor Who UB, and WUBG has the two Atraxa. But the other three don't get much.

Partner is an option I've considered. But at a glance, it seems a bit forced.

Do you think design will do more with the quad-color groupings? Would a set like Alara or Tarkir be possible, but with quad-color tribes? Or does that overcomplicate design too much?

Four-color legendary cards are in a weird place. We don’t want to make them such that people are just using them to play more colors in Commander, so it means we have to be very focused in what they’re doing, and finding a home for such a design is tricky.

Mana Cost Ordering

New 19 Mar 2024 Asked by aork14 52 Comments

"Hi Mark, in mana costs, for mixing hybrid mana and non hybrid (and mixing different hybrid mana symbols too like Leyline of the Guildpact) is there an official order that you guys go by?"ft
As far as I can tell, it just follows the normal mana color order, with the hybrid mana symbols placed in-between their respective colors to "connect" them, like in compleated Tamiyo the phyrexian hybrid mana was in-between its two colors. So like, as an example, if there were a hypothetical bant card with one of each color and then a hybrid White/Blue and a hybrid Green/White, it would be templated as G g/w W w/b B

That sounds correct.

Hybrid Mana Cost Order

Hi Mark, in mana costs, for mixing hybrid mana and non hybrid (and mixing different hybrid mana symbols too like Leyline of the Guildpact) is there an official order that you guys go by? I tried sussing it out by looking at mana costs that mix them, but I can't seem to figure it out. Thank you and have a good one.

Leyline of the Guildpact, does them in WUBRG order. I’m not sure we do it enough to have a default for all use cases.

All-Colors Card Info

New 11 Mar 2024 Asked by davidemsa 39 Comments

Re the person asking for a keyword meaning ""this object is all colors". While it's not a keyword, 3 cards like that exist. Transguild Courier from Dissension, Sphinx of the Guildpact from Ravnica Allegiance and Fallaji Wayfarer from the Painbow Dominaria United Commander deck.

Ravnica Legalities

New 27 Feb 2024 Asked by aceofmoxes 36 Comments

If I'm playing planechase on a Ravnica plane, and I cast murder on my opponent's enemy of the guildpact, that wouldn't be a crime, right? (murdering the guildless is legal on Ravnica)

Murder is targeted, so casting it on an opponent’s creature is committing a crime. By the way, it’s not legal to kill the guildless.

Guildpact Casting Cost

New 25 Jan 2024 Asked by kamenridercorn 31 Comments

It feels odd that a card referencing the Guildpact can be cast for less than 2 colors. Was the ability to cast it for monogreen purely because of its effects?

The card has core green abilities.

Leyline Break Question

Hi Mark. Is Leyline of the Guildpact a break in non-Green?

No.

Hybrid Symbols Consistency

New 24 Jan 2024 Asked by hyrosen-blog 40 Comments

Leyline of the Guildpact would look significantly cooler if all the hybrid symbols were G/X instead of half being X/G. A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of small minds. (But Hobgoblin of Small Minds would be a great name for a Magic card!)

Each mana symbol, which inlcudes hybrid, has one, and only one version.

Game Mechanics Query

New 24 Jan 2024 Asked by dapatman-blog 28 Comments

In an Acorn game, if I control Leyline of the Guildpact and my brown-eyed opponent controls Avatar of Me, are all my nonland permanents brown in addition to the five regular colours?

Yep.

Ravnica's Ancient Days

New 04 May 2023 Asked by submergedforgottencladogram 78 Comments

Mark, I've never really liked Ravnica, but the idea of a throwback set that takes us to Ravnica back when the Guildpact was first formed, when both the guilds and their paruns might have been very different even from how they were in the first Ravnica block, that would be *very* exciting, regardless of whether we had to have it over two sets or if we had to pick a particular five proto-guilds to focus on in one set.

The founding of the Guildpact is a common ask.

Acorn Cards Colors

New 15 Apr 2023 Asked by spencer-of-the-third-path 36 Comments

In games with Acorn cards, are cards like Sphinx of the Guildpact and Transguild Courier also Pink and Gold?

If it says it is all colors then it is every color that exists in the game you are playing.

Historical Set Hopes

New 14 Mar 2023 Asked by lurebound 67 Comments

Now that The Brothers' War is a thing... Could we hope for sets based on others past events like the Thran-Phyrexian War or the creation of the Original Guildpact?

I can’t stop you from hoping. I do think us doing something increases the chances of us doing it again (if it went well).

Ravnica Cycle Evolution

New 09 Aug 2022 Asked by reginakasteen 52 Comments

Ravnica trivia! The boostable cycle (which does go both directions, btw) is a cycle that evolved through the block. In Ravnica it's non-creature spells that got extra effects if cast with the off-color, in Guildpact it's creatures that got ETBs, and in Dissension it's creatures with ETBs that you sacrificed if you didn't spend the off-color. The Dissension ones are neat because they're technically mono-color but implicitly multi, so they have "mono-blue" vigilance or "mono-red" fear.

It’s all coming back. : )Thanks.

The Possibility of Past-Set Returns

New 25 Aug 2021 Asked by thearckanum 48 Comments

Mark, since we are going to the past, any chances for a Ravnica Guildpact set and a Amonkhet before Bolas set? :)

We’re trying an expansion set in the past as an experiment. If it’s successful, it could prompt more such sets in the future. If only there was an expression to capture this concept. : )

Visiting Plane's Past

New 13 Aug 2021 Asked by hugsandambitions 48 Comments

Is visiting a plane's past something that's theoretically on the table? I don't mean a timeline change, like Fate Reforged. But rather a set that shows us the formation of the Guildpact, or Amonkhet pre-Bolas, that kind of thing.

It’s not off the table.

I assume in one alternate reality.

Rebirth of Fallen Characters

New 11 Oct 2020 Asked by shadowstar91 91 Comments

Hey MaRo; seeing that guy's trivia about Balthor got me interested so I went an looked it up. Not counting alternate timelines (sorry Planar Chaos and Tarkir) there have been 10 creatures in MtGs history where we got their first card, they died in story, then we got a new card post-death! Balthor, Bontu, Daxos, Kefnet, Mikaeus, Neheb, Niv-Mizzet, Oketra, Polukranos and Rhonas! 4 zombie gods, a zombie hydra, zombie dwarf, zombie cleric, zombie minotaur, the reborn guildpact, and a risen demigod.

Potential Changes to Nephilim Cycle

New 31 May 2020 Asked by eldritchander 34 Comments

Hey Mark! With the statement that y’all are willing to change how the Companion mechanic works as printed on cards, would y’all finally be willing to make the Nephilim cycle from Guildpact Legendary? We need some more four colour legends! I know you’ve said before that you regret them not being legendary when they were originally printed, but you were (Or are) not allowed to errata them. It seems like less of an errata to add one word to five cards than it does to change how a mechanic works.

Us dealing with companion is a special thing and not precedent to making more changes.

Ravnica Product Set Possibility

If/When a Ravnica product set during the founding of the Guildpact

Little if. It’s a cool idea, but no guarantee we’re doing it.
