Flight Characteristics in Characters

New 27 Jul 2024 Asked by magicwithclass 12 Comments

Do marvel characters that can fly but not naturally have flying? For example, storm doesn't fly, she rides air currents. Magneto doesn't fly, he is manipulating metal in the ground to simulate flight. Jean grey doesn't fly, she uses telekinesis. Do these characters have flying or do they have activated flying or something to else to represent this is not true flight

If you can propel yourself through the air through whatever means, you can have flying.

Superheroes' Flight-Based Abilities

New 27 Jul 2024 Asked by zombsidian 2 Comments

You said that a problem with designing the Marvel sets was the fact that, according to the comics, the characters overwhelmingly have flight-based abilities. Would DC also have the same issue design-wise?

I think most superhero properties do.

Enjoyment from Marvel Sets

New 24 Jul 2024 Asked by windows-media-playa 5 Comments

Gooday sir! I call upon the sacred right of birthday trivia to ask you about your favorite set to open packs from. I only really started playing when UB LOTR released and since then I've had some fun pulls including Ulamog showcase from MH3. I would love to see what luck brings from your favorite set to rip into.

I’ve been enjoying opening packs from upcoming Marvel sets. : )

Sales Trend and Future Strategy

New 13 Jul 2024 Asked by dissociativehusky 7 Comments

I have a sales question. LOTR, I believe, is the best selling set of all time, right? And if I recall, the best selling commander set of all time is Fallout, behind that being Warhammer. Goes to imply the Marvel sets will likely be the next highest selling sets of all time, if not just behind LOTR. My question is, doesn't this show WOTC should mostly just pivot to UB as the new 'standard' with old planes as the less visited product?

While will continue to do Universes Beyond as there is an obvious audience, but the Magic in-universe sets (which we call “MIP sets”) also serve an important function. There are a lot of fans who love Magic’s IP, and having sets that we have don’t have to interface with outside partners has a lot of advantages.

Spiderman's Colors and Marvel Partnership

New 13 Jul 2024 Asked by winteristhebestship 8 Comments

What colors would Spiderman be? I'm curious. (Also please convince Disney to do a Marvel UB 🙏)

I think base Spider-Man is green/white with some blue. Also, I have some good news for you. We’ve already announced a multi-set Universes Beyond partnership with Marvel.

Future Set's Heroic Rework

New 11 Jul 2024 Asked by bassimelwakil 9 Comments

FYI on May 16th I asked that given how disguise reworks morph and the dev issues with heroic, what would you consider changing to rework heroic. You replied “there is an upcoming set that answers that very question”. I presumed you were referring to a Marvel set, but qanadhar left a comment certain it was Bloomburrow. Just some of the fun foreshadowing of Blogatog. :)(I presume there’s an article or podcast that explains the rework soon?)

Next week’s article talks about the mechanics. Short version: heroic looked into allowing abilities, but there existed things you could repeatedly activate for 0, so we left it off. Valiant added abilities back in to help it trigger more, and used the once a turn restriction to deal with the problem interactions.

Marvel Card Design Query

New 07 Jul 2024 Asked by jjustin1379 4 Comments

Is marvel going to do the thing where you out the name of the attack on the card? What do you call that and is it popular? I liked its use in universes beyond properties as flavor.

They’re called flavor words. I can’t comment yet if the Marvel sets will use them.

Nicely.

Dibs on Marvel and Other Media

New 06 Jul 2024 Asked by stormtide-leviathan 5 Comments

You mentioned a while back that, when Universes Beyond began, you called dibs on any hypothetical Marvel set before it had even begun. Are you allowed to tell us other media you called dibs on? (Obviously, you can't tell us whether they *are* going to happen, but ones you'd be leading if they do)

I basically called dibs on most comic book-inspired properties. : )

Upcoming Universes Beyond Sets

New 05 Jul 2024 Asked by surnblack-blog 0 Comments

Besides Final Fantasy and Marvel, any date or hint for new information about new Universes Beyond sets? I'm loving every UB set so far, even if sometimes they are not for me, but there are a few games that I would love to see a partnership with Wizards, so I'm always excited to see new informations about new UB!

There are things we’re working on that haven’t been announced yet.

Partnership with Marvel

New 28 Jun 2024 Asked by jjustin1379 4 Comments

Do you have a partnership with Disney or marvel?

We have announced a partnership with Marvel.

Green Characters and Spells

New 22 Jun 2024 Asked by pbjplatypus-but-out-pf-phase 8 Comments

As someone who really likes Green, I recognize that many IPs considered for UB aren't going to be green due to the nature of most media... That said, I'm really excited for the Marvel set, because superhero stuff ALWAYS has plant-beings and Strong Guys and that kinda stuff! Can't wait!

Marvel does have plenty of things for green characters and spells.

Marvel Products Information

New 05 Jun 2024 Asked by zackdes44 2 Comments

What information is publicly available about the Marvel products? All I can find is that there will be Marvel products. Do we know what products (play boosters, commander decks, secret lairs, etc) will be made or a schedule for any of it?

The only news about it is the partnership exists and it will be for multiple sets.

Marvel Design Humor

New 22 May 2024 Asked by doolittle-alley 9 Comments

You talk a lot about Vision design for the Marvel sets, but what about Iron Man design or Hulk design? Seems like you put a lot of effort into just one character here. ;)

Marvel Design Excitement

New 22 May 2024 Asked by perfectcollectorduck 20 Comments

Do you have a number one with a bullet character you were most excited to design for Marvel? And can you pin it to tell us one day?

I’ll share this. When we were first pitching to Marvel, Aaron Forsythe came to me to design a bunch of cards to use in the pitch. He told me to mostly use high profile characters, but one should be a deep cut (to average Marvel fans, not to hard core fans). I chose one of my favorite characters and designed a super fun card. Later when I was leading the vision design of a Marvel set, I put that creature in. I believe it won the rare poll and is still in the file, pretty close to my original design (although numbers might have been tweaked). When the card comes out, I’ll identify it.

Dream Crossover IP

New 20 May 2024 Asked by zombsidian 23 Comments

Do you have a dream IP you'd love to have Magic do a crossover with? Or is Marvel that dream IP?

Marvel is that IP. There are other comic properties I would also enjoy very much.

Hulk's Color Identity

New 19 May 2024 Asked by hermyxx 18 Comments

Hello Mark. I've very hyped about the Marvel sets. Especially hulk for whom I just finished his Immortal Hulk run and I loved it. Sadly, I know you can't talk about the sets yet. However, in a vacuum, would you say Hulk is more Red, Green, or Red Green ? Also, have you read Immortal Hulk ?

I think Hulk is red/green in his base portrayal, but there are a lot of different takes on Hulk over the years.

Marvel Characters Aligned

New 14 May 2024 Asked by gevth 11 Comments

Are there any Avengers or X-Men (or any classic Marvel hero) who is core black?

Yellowjacket (Hank Pym with the personality change) is the one that comes to mind first.

Marvel Set Frequency

New 12 May 2024 Asked by dude1818 31 Comments

Can you share how often we're getting Marvel sets? Is it every year, every other year, etc?

That isn’t public yet.

Marvel's Flying Challenge

New 12 May 2024 Asked by graymerchantsmonomyth 46 Comments

Have you run into any properties were *too many* characters would want to have flying? I imagine Marvel has more than any of the past properties you've worked with.

Marvel definitely has been tackling the “too many creatures fly” issue.
