'What If' and 'Dream' Sets

New 04 Jul 2024 Asked by j-waffles 5 Comments

Re: “it was all a dream” setWhile not literally a “dream”, “what if (thing that didn’t happen)” has been a theme we’ve seen before. We got a secret lair with planeswalkers stylized around themes magic hasn’t had (or at least, hadn’t yet had at the time), we got several “what if they were compleated” alternate art cards in All will be One, and in Bloomburrow we’re getting a bonus sheet of “what if they were on Bloomburrow”. I understand these aren’t literal in universe dreams, but they are cards that take place in a vague “other” make believe land

“What if” is also on the short list, but is different than a “in a dream” set.

Phyrexian Invasion Impact

New 20 May 2024 Asked by 1953943 19 Comments

I understand that there are things you can point to that are visible consequences of the Phyrexian invasion like story content and the deaths of Eldraine’s king and queen, but doesn’t it say something that you need to point those out as counter arguments to begin with? The problem with threatening a Phyrexian planar threat is that the damage was implied to be irreversible. Compleation often involved grotesque surgical mutilation, so it doesn’t make sense that compleated characters could return to normal so easily and without any significant scarring. Phyrexian oil is supposed to be so dangerous that a single drop could eventually infect and corrupt an entire plane, so it seems impossible to eradicate. Even ignoring the resilience of the Phyrexians themselves, a large scale military invasion aided by the most powerful beings on each plane should have left those planes in a post-apocalyptic state, yet all of that seems to be off-screen or completely disregarded. We went underground for Ixalan, so we didn’t see the devastation. We went into the wilds for Eldraine, so we didn’t see the courts in shambles. Ravnica seems to be the same as ever, just with more detective hats. And the last set of the year that immediately followed the invasion takes place on a plane nobody even lived on during the invasion, so there were no consequences to show off.I think the real issue isn’t necessarily that there weren’t consequences, but that you guys chose deliberately not to show them on cards, outside of the desparked planeswalkers and a few cards in Aftermath. As it is, it’s difficult to believe that the Phyrexian threat that was built up over decades could be so easily repelled AND completely defeated at the height of their power, but I would argue that the sets directly following the invasion should have all had a blatantly dark, somber, post-apocalyptic theme. Instead, we got a bunch of light hearted costume party sets that seemed chosen specifically to NOT show how much damage was done. I get that you want to have a tone shift after a darker year, but it just feels like instead of getting closure, we all just got whiplash instead. It would have been better to show a struggling multiverse slowly learning to rebuild before diving into the next big arc.

There’s a big difference between did big things happen and do we need to focus on them? For the Vorthoses who read the stories, the Phyrexian War had huge consequences for many worlds. From a game standpoint, it changed how we used a whole card type and allowed us to make sets we couldn’t make before. The impact of the events of March of the Machine on flavor and mechanics was major. The reason we didn’t focus on the outcomes on the cards and have a year of dreary sets is we strongly believed the majority of the players didn’t want that.

Compleated Mechanic Future

New 06 Apr 2024 Asked by kreetn 59 Comments

Where is “Compleated” on the storm scale? Is the answer different for supplemental product?

Compleated is dependent on the Phyrexians returning. Long term, those chances are good, as they’re a great villain, but I don’t expect to see it anytime soon. Even if they do return, there are a lot of popular Phyexian returning mechanics to choose from. So, compleated is like a 7.

Mana Cost Ordering

New 19 Mar 2024 Asked by aork14 52 Comments

"Hi Mark, in mana costs, for mixing hybrid mana and non hybrid (and mixing different hybrid mana symbols too like Leyline of the Guildpact) is there an official order that you guys go by?"ft
As far as I can tell, it just follows the normal mana color order, with the hybrid mana symbols placed in-between their respective colors to "connect" them, like in compleated Tamiyo the phyrexian hybrid mana was in-between its two colors. So like, as an example, if there were a hypothetical bant card with one of each color and then a hybrid White/Blue and a hybrid Green/White, it would be templated as G g/w W w/b B

That sounds correct.

Character and Machine Naming

New 31 Oct 2023 Asked by neotrup 36 Comments

While I don't think The Skyship Weatherlight qualifies as a character, it does eventually turn into Weatherlight Compleated which does seem to qualify as a character since it moves of its own volition even after it's powerstone was removed. The question comes down to whether naming the character will count the machine that became it. So for a similar question: If I name Memnarch with Vorthos, will it count towards cards with Mirari in them?

If you want to name Weatherlight as a character, I won’t stop your fun. Have at it. Memnarch can count the Mirari, why not?

Compleated Characters Return

New 07 Oct 2023 Asked by cordiallupine 36 Comments

I have a character I really like that was compleated that I really want to see again. Is there any chance of that? Should I get my hopes up?

Nissa and Ajani were compleated and got cured, so there’s hope.

MOM Complements Praised

New 17 Jun 2023 Asked by 22bebo 32 Comments

I know we are talking about LTR mostly now, but I wanted to compliment the design of the MOM compleated DFC creatures. I particularly like how they jump through some hoops to not be color pie breaks on their backside.

Glad you like them. I agree that the set design team did great work on their individual designs.

Most of them are in the un-iverse these days which didn’t get attacked.

Phyrexian Invasion Set

New 14 Apr 2023 Asked by forestd3w 25 Comments

Can I ask for an innovation set that shows more of the phyrexian invasion? More planeswalkers, more characters that got compleated and keywords related to the invaded world? (Like Magecraft and Nassari, the compleated dean for the invasion of Strixhaven)

Being how far our lead time is, I don;t think it would be relevant by the time we could publish it.

Compleated Chimney Imp

If Phyrexia had somehow managed to compleat Chimney Imp, would they have won?

It’s good the multiverse never found out.

Compleated Sorin Speculation

If Sorin had been compleated, we could have Markov the Machine.

True. : )

Cost of Transforming Creatures

New 13 Apr 2023 Asked by blazinjsin 28 Comments

I feel like the new creatures that get compleated when you transform them are going to be the same as the eldrazi werewolves that got better when they transformed, lots of potential, but way too expensive to flip. I could be wrong of course, we'll have to see this weekend.

They all do have Phyrexian mana costs.

Compleated Planeswalker Exclusion

New 08 Apr 2023 Asked by lordmohses 34 Comments

Hey mark,Was there any consideration of putting a compleated planeswalker in MoM? I thought it would have been really cool to see “Jace and Vraska” to go along with the team up theme.

We were trying to keep Phyrexia: All Will Be One and March of the Machine separate from one another.

Supplement Set Challenges

New 08 Apr 2023 Asked by elderdragonmaster55 40 Comments

Re: and Koma/tibalt/theros gods compleated on cardsWhy is that hard? Couldn't it be a regular old supplament set that can do any area in time line like modern horizons sets?

It’s the same old problem. A player desperately wants Thing X. It’s the one thing they most want us to do. There are plenty of opportunities for us to do it. Why won’t we make it? Because for each player it’s a different thing. It’s not just one thing we have to make, but millions of things we have to make. Yes, we’ll try to figure out what are the biggest requests so we can prioritize those, but even then, finding the right slot where it works with the set it’s in and synergizes in the larger environment can be tricky.

Give your team high 5's for giving us so many good cards! Compleated characters, a spell that grants convoke, enchantments giving planeswalkers loyalty abilities, a awesome Urabrask card among other cool team ups and Realmbreaker. Thank you so much!! ^_^

You’re welcome. I’ll pass along the high fives.

Compleated Characters Future

New 05 Apr 2023 Asked by jaymictheunyielding 49 Comments

If or when: cards representing the compleated characters we didn't get in MOM, like Koma or the other Theros gods. Also Tibalt.

If. We need to find the right product to put them in.

Planeswalker Phyrexian Type

New 03 Apr 2023 Asked by king-of-masks-deactivated202307 45 Comments

Do you think Compleated Planeswalkers should be Triable Planeswalker / Phyrexian X? Now that Phyrexian tribal is a thing, those PWs not counting feels out of place.

No, planeswalkerness supercedes creature types. Ajani is not mechanically a Cat, for instance.

Compleated Sleeper Agent

New 01 Apr 2023 Asked by raygallade 46 Comments

Mark, imagine my Shock and Duress when I discovered that you were a compleated sleeper agent! How long have you been keeping this secret from us?

I think I’ve been pretty open about it. I was compleated years ago by my old toaster for those curious.

Praise for Compleation Choices

New 01 Apr 2023 Asked by trollcatgirl 56 Comments

Can you give a kudos to whoever was in charge of choosing who got compleated (I'm guessing the story team)? Because I said NOOOOO out loud when I saw Etali and Polukranos in the TDFC section in the card gallery

Can do.
