Hi Mark - please settle a question. My opponent has a 1/3 with an enchantment aura giving it 2/2 and flying for a 3/5 flier. On a later turn I make it a 1/1 frog losing all abilities. Is it now a 1/1 without flying or a 3/3 without flying. Thanks for your help, we couldn't find a good internet amswer!

It depends on how the card is making it a 1/1. If it’s changing the base stats, the aura boost would still apply.

In response to another ask, there already are Auras that have different properties based on what kind of permanent they enchant, the Rune cycle from Kaldheim. Not exactly what the asker was talking about, but pretty close.

Just wanna give shout out to awesome sets you have planned for the Dragonstorm arc: Bloomburrow for the high fantasy traditionalists and typal lovers, Duskmourn for the modern horror fans and a different take on an Enchantment matters set, The Death Race as a fun exploration of the Omenpaths and finally a set centered around Vehicles (I mean it's not confirmed but…c'mon), and a long-awaited Return to Tarkir set for Magic veterans and those who waited for a wedge faction set! I am absolutely stoked for all of these sets, and I am glad that Magic embraces variety enough to take risks for modern, novel aesthetics while still preserving old, familiar aesthetics!

Hi Mark,If or when: Instants/Sorceries getting their own frame like Artifacts and (nyx-bordered) enchantments do, possibly in a limited capacity to start with, as a trial run perhaps?

White and green care about enchantments. Is there no world where they would be allowed to copy enchantment tokens as well?

Green and white could probably copy enchantment tokens.

Colorless is already deciduous. And enchantments are evergreen. So, I think it will happen. I’m not sure it will become a regular thing, but who know?

Hi Mark! Two things. One, I guessed that Duskmourn would have an 80s horror movie theme and was thrilled that the preview cards look freaking sweet! Two, a huge THANK YOU to the folks responsible for giving enchantments the Nyx frame. I am very excited for Magic this year.

We did state at the Gen Con panel that announced Duskmourn that it had an 70’s and 80’s horror vibe, but I’m glad you like it. Giving enchantments the Nyx frame has been something we’ve been debating for a while. I’m glad we finally did it.I too am excited for this year. : )

Following up on my "magic for beginners" question. I think jumpstart is great, but I'm envisioning a set that exists in a way that can add complexity for each level. Like you break out the set and it starts ok here are two 30 card decks with just creatures (and those creatures just have say, haste and flying), once you're good with that, you add in 10 sorcery cards that are easy to understand, then 10 enchantments, then 10 instants. I just feel like magic throws people in the deep end.

The interesting thing we’ve learned having explored this topic for over thirty years is players are more likely to continue playing if it’s a little above them, if they feel like there’s more things to learn. When we strip a lot of things out to simplify it, many players go, “That’s it?” and leave never to explore any deeper.

Why is Greatest Show in the Multiverse an artifact?

Art ratio.Okay, you probably need more than that. When we assigned the art for Greatest Show in the Multiverse we assigned it like a Saga (aka long and thin). What we hadn’t thought through was that the card was initially a colorless enchantment (as we wanted all decks to have access to it). Why would that matter?Well, it turns out the way colorless frames work is they are full card illustrations and then peek through the frame.

See how you can see art through the text box? That means any colorless art assignment has to have a different art ratio, one that fits a whole Magic card.We didn’t realize this until we went to build the frames. The art for The Greatest Show in the Multiverse was amazing, but it didn’t fit the needs for the colorless frame. It was too late to recommission it, and we really liked it, so we looked into ways to keep the existing art.I still wanted it to be colorless, so the only solution we could come up with was to make it an artifact in addition to an enchantment (Sagas are an enchantment subtype). The art was of a poster, an object, so I felt it was something we could accept. It still needed a new frame built, but we could keep the art ratio.This story is a great lesson about how details matter and you sometimes have to get creative to problem solve.
