Misinterpretation of Card Costs

New 15 Jul 2024 Asked by theuninvitedghost 1 Comments

“The biggest problem is that we have to cost cards with whole mana symbols (other than Un-sets, we don’t do ½) and many abilities simply aren’t worth a whole mana by themselves.” Did you miss-read this Question Mark’s question about vanilla creatures as French vanilla?

I didn’t misread it. They were asking why card #A, a vanilla creature, and Card #B, a creature with the same stats but with rules text cost the same. The answer is the rules text usually isn’t worth a full mana, so removing it doesn’t make the creature one cheaper.

French Vanilla as Set Theme

New 11 Jul 2024 Asked by andalon-historian 6 Comments

Could *french* vanilla work as a set theme?

Probably not. It has many of the same problems as trying to build a vanilla set. If you don’t draw the cards that care, the set is overly simplistic.

Tarmogoyf as French Vanilla

New 13 Jun 2024 Asked by aalgot 1 Comments

To be French vanilla, you have to have no rules text other than keyword abilities, so Tarmogoyf is not French vanilla. But it’s mechanicaly identical to a card with no abilities and the stat line “the number of card types among cards in all graveyards/the number of card types among cards in all graveyards” which would technically be vanilla science it only has stats.

Only having stats is not the same as not having rules text. 2/2 is just simpler than */*.

Categorizing Tarmogoyf's Abilities

New 13 Jun 2024 Asked by secretgiant 12 Comments

Would Tarmogoyf be considered vanilla because it has no abilities, french vanilla because it's power and toughness are defined in the text of the card (albeit not by an ability), or neither because complexity or any other reason?

To be vanilla you have to have no rules text (not no abilities), so Tarmogoys if not vanilla. To be French vanilla, you have to have no rules text other than keyword abilities, so Tarmogoyf is not French vanilla.

Favorite Card Insights

Hello Mark. I redeemed my coveted birthday rite several days ago, but it seems to have gotten caught up in the shuffle. I figured I wouldn't submit it on my birthday, which was the 6th, because a lot was going on then in Magic. My query was for any interesting tidbit about my favorite card in the game, Malefic Scythe from M21, and, provided you had nothing about it, instead the card that got me into the game, Errant Ephemeron from Time Spiral. Thank you very much for your time and consideration.

When we first designed suspend creatures, we started with familiar vanilla and French vanilla ones. Errant Ephemeron was Air Elemental, and one of the first ones we designed. Happy Belated Birthday!

Tribe Diversity Discussion

New 08 Sep 2023 Asked by pixeltamer 25 Comments

I excluded vanilla / french vanilla creatures because they tend to not have a good shot at being playable in Constructed. Including those, with the same "new cards since 2013" filter: 541 Vampires and Zombies, 314 Elves, 172 Goblins, 133 Merfolk. Less of a difference than I thought there would be. Many fans of the tribe feel let down with most new set releases as we don't see cards we can get excited about. e.g. Emry is a constructed powerhouse in ELD and there's nothing like her in WOE.

There have been vanilla and French vanilla creatures played in competitive tournament decks, and many non-vanillas that weren’t. I’m not sure it’s a great dividing line.

Merfolk Card Concerns

New 07 Sep 2023 Asked by pixeltamer 32 Comments

Sorry to keep pestering you about characteristic creatures. I am primarily a constructed Merfolk player and it's frustrating seeing so many sets go by where there are no cards of that type other than obvious limited fodder. Looking at "cards first printed 2013 or later, neither vanilla or french vanilla" there are: 498 Vampire or Zombie, 307 Elf, 157 Goblin, 124 Merfolk. I know Ixalan and Lorwyn are coming, can R&D please try to slot more in elsewhere? The support in MH2, DMU, and MOM was great.

There are a lot of factors towards these numbers, the biggest being that blue has the smallest percentage of creatures. Also, not all characteristic creature types are equal in how often they fit on a world. We’re well aware of the Merfolk fans and we do have plans to keep making Merfolk. Finally, what are the numbers if you don’t remove Vanilla or French Vanilla? It’s an odd thing to exclude from the stats.

Simpler Planeswalkers Complexity

New 01 Jul 2023 Asked by j-waffles 21 Comments

Re:French vanilla planeswalker“Is there any reason to do this aside from saying we did?” If there was a set with low rarity planeswalkers like war of the spark, I would imagine a French vanilla planeswalker might get made on accident, just on account of trying to keep complexity relatively low

A planeswalker granting evergreen keywords is much more complex than a creature having it.

Vanilla Planeswalker Concept

New 01 Jul 2023 Asked by j-waffles 76 Comments

Could we ever see a French Vanilla planeswalker? i.e. all their loyalty abilities are just keywords (ex. investigate, proliferate, populate, etc)

Is there a reason to do this other than to say we did?

French Vanilla Matters?

Would you say that cards like Odric and Urborg Scavengers qualify as French Vanilla Matters??

No, they’re anti-synergistic with vanilla creatures.

French Vanilla Dynamics

New 18 Apr 2023 Asked by stellae-in-caelis 25 Comments

RE: French Vanilla MattersI know cards with detainment affects can blanket prohibit activated abilities, even if a creature doesn't have any, but can the rules as they currently work count and identify what kinds of abilities a permanent has? i.e., count the number of triggered abilities a creature has for a scaling effect

Activated abilities are easier for players to recognize than triggered.

Vanilla Creature Definition

New 17 Apr 2023 Asked by sombramainexe 26 Comments

Regarding the creatures with no abilities being done away with in place of creatures with only keyword abilities, have you considered lumping those creatures in a category like historic? i.e. reminder text like (Vanilla creatures are creatures with no abilities except for keyword abilities)

French vanilla are creatures with only keywords. Vanilla means no rules text.

French Vanilla Cards

New 18 Mar 2023 Asked by j-waffles 33 Comments

Would it be possible to have cards that card about French vanilla? I’m not sure if “creatures with only keyword abilities” is something that’s possible within the rules

The rules can’t really handle keyword as a concept.

Primary, Secondary Mechanics

New 23 Jan 2023 Asked by sangwoosstuff-deactivated202306 29 Comments

A mechanic being primary, secondary etc in a color means more in quantity, rarity or something else? Flash for example would look like primary for white in quantity having 31 more cards than green

It’s based on a number of factors including frequency, rarity, simplicity (who has French vanilla creatures with it), granting it to others, etc. Also, remember to look at recency when comparing. Historically, white was tertiary used when combined with an effect you want at instant speed, which white has more of than any color. All that said, we’ve been using flash more in white recently, moving it to secondary, so there’s a chance it could become primary.

Hi Mark,I've been seeing some pockets of the online community being rather focused on making snide remarks about you, in particular, about what people see as design mistakes. Honestly, I think a lot of it, even if the criticisms have valid points, are just needlessly mean spirited and not trying to come from a place of good faith criticism. I think part of that is people focusing on the more obvious mistakes but not knowing the things you've spearheaded that have been perceived widely as great changes for the game. What would you say are some of the biggest changes for the game that have been as close to universally accepted as good that you played a significant part in having made happen? Because I think people would be surprised about what they love that you helped make happen.

Showcase Frames on Cards

New 24 Feb 2022 Asked by erok-lrrfan 81 Comments

For vanilla/French vanilla has it come up to lower the type line and put more art in showcase frames?

I’m always on a lookout where we can do the full art Vanilla creatures that Future Sight hinted at.The reason we don’t just move the line is it has all sorts of ramifications (each one is a new card frame and needs special art, for example), so it has to be something baked into the product very early.

Enchantment Creatures Debate Revisited

New 11 Jan 2022 Asked by torrentialgearhunk 39 Comments

In your drive to work podcasts you mention "the ship has sailed" on making vanilla enchantment creatures. In THB there was a couple of vanilla/French vanilla enchantment creatures. Has the ship come back to port, and what does that mean for making elementals/illusion/etc. default enchantments?

I will continue to fight the fight on simple vanilla enchantment creatures, but there is a contingency that feels enchantments have to feel like enchantments and thus want an enchantment-like effect. I feel that the state of being an enchantment and thus being affects by things that effect enchantments is good enough (it’s how artifacts work).

Stretching Vanilla Creature Concept

New 24 Dec 2021 Asked by protectorowl 28 Comments

In regards to vanilla creature tribal: could the rules handle the phrase "If you control a creature with no static, activated or keyword abilities?" That would let etb creatures (which are french vanilla) count as vanilla.

Assuming those words work (and I’m skeptical they do), they let through every written out creature ability. For example, it wouldn’t affect creatures with “this creature can’t be blocked” but would affect fliers. I worry that players would have trouble understanding what gets affected.

Feasibility of French Vanilla Matters

No idea how it'd be done, but could Muraganda theoretically have a "French Vanilla matters"?

That’s very hard to write on cards.

Alternate Terminology Suggestions

New 29 Oct 2021 Asked by kandykidzero 62 Comments

Do you think there is another word to use other than "Flavor" for flavor text and "Vanilla/French Vanilla" for creatures with no/or one ability, to help reduce the confusion on which cards are edible? Isn't this why you switched to sports from food types for set code names, to help people understand that these are to be used for a game and played with?

I’ll change over to poison names. Vanilla creature become Arsenic creatures.
