Investigate

Change in the 'Investigate' Function

New 17 Jul 2024 Asked by sombramainexe 2 Comments

Has it ever been considered to change Investigate to something like Descend? So that way, "Whenever you investigate" would trigger no matter how you made the clue, just checking if a clue was made.

Not that I know of.

Clue Card Mechanic

If a card had “gift a clue” would the reminder text read “they create a clue token” or “they investigate”?

You don’t have your investigate to create a Clue.

Garruk's Future Plans

New 12 Apr 2024 Asked by edvaldofelixleal 42 Comments

Mark, is Garruk in on some plan that we'll see soon? It would be interesting for an alliance between Garruk and Liliana to investigate what Jace is up to... 🤔🤔🤔

I believe we’ll see Garruk again.

Investigate Term Retention

New 08 Apr 2024 Asked by sparkyyoungupstart 28 Comments

I totally understand your feeling that tying clue creation to a keyword was a mistake, especially with hindsight and all the predefined tokens we have now. But that makes me curious as to whether there was ever any discussion of doing away with Investigate for MKM? It does seem like a perfect opportunity to cut out the middleman and simply say that a card creates a clue token.

Cutting the term investigate on a set about murder mysteries seemed wrong.

Investigate Mechanic Regret

Investigate was a mistake?

I believe tying Clue artifact tokens to a keyword action was a mistake.

Investigate vs Incubate

If investigate was a mistake why did you create incubate?

An incubator token is not an artifact token with the utility of Clues.

UB Deck Cohesion Issue

New 09 Mar 2024 Asked by evscfa1 60 Comments

Most of my issue with UB, particularly the commander decks, is their lack of availability on MtGO, as well as their lack of cohesion at some points. Individually, the cards are absolutely flavor wins, but as part of a precon they really don't work cohesively. Take the Timey Wimey precon for example. That deck was absolutely pulling itself in different directions by trying to be time counters and investigate, and then several cards that had nothing to do with either strategy. I would have been more satisfied had the deck been all in on the time counters, rather than trying to split the deck's strategy.Another example is the Ruinous Powers 40K precon. It had a very heavy demon theme, but it was split between demons-matter/aggro and cascade/spellslinger. Flavorfully each card is an absolute banger. But the decks as a whole really lack a real focus on one or the other. An example of UB doing well is the LotR set as a whole. It allowed for flavor wins while still keeping themes appropriate for its strategy, with blue/black/red being heavy on amassing orc armies and buffing orcs, while green/blue was focused on scrying and payoffs for scrying. Flavor wins, while still keeping a clear focus for deckbuilding.

You’re comparing apples and oranges. A preconstructed deck has different limitations than a randomized product.

Positive UB Feedback

New 29 Feb 2024 Asked by nephilv 25 Comments

Inspired by all the Detective cards, I recently opened my Esper-colored Warhammer Commander precon, Inquisitor Greyfax, and starting putting together an Investigate Commander deck. I ended up with "draws matter" and "artifacts matter" themes to go with the Clues and lined up numerous Doctor Who UB characters (mostly companions) and one or two from the Stranger Things Secret Lair drop. Lastly, I found Starscream from Transformer in my Brother's War stuff and he went along nicely with drawing matters. While this is certainly a strange combination of properties, building the deck was fun and I've been embracing UB as part of the process.

The Fallout set looks amazing and I've always been a fan of the series. I'm pretty neutral on Assassin's Creed and even Marvel, but good card designs get me excited no matter who the characters are, so I'll be picking some up surely. So there's some positive feedback for UB. To make this an ask, is there a place we can suggest possible properties to seek out for future UBs? I have a wish list.

Tell me and I can pass them along.

Token Keyword Potential

If/When keywords for creating treasure or food tokens, like Investigate for clues?

If. We believe not tying an artifact token to a keyword was an upgrade.

Clues and Investigate

New 23 Jan 2024 Asked by su92 29 Comments

With Murders at Karlov Manor using Clues as a major theme again, was there any discussion to just creating the tokens instead of using the investigate keyword?

It’s hard not to use the word investigate in a top-down murder mystery set. Future sets with Clues might consider it.

Keyword Action Discussion

New 22 Jan 2024 Asked by hodorkotb 22 Comments

Has there ever been any discussion re: making keyword actions for creating other predefined tokens similar to investigate? Cook for food tokens perhaps?

More the reverse discussion. Can we just make Clues without investigate?

Set Complexity Concerns

New 16 Jan 2024 Asked by gevth 30 Comments

Some really cool cards have been previewed today! I especially liked A Killer Among Us. My question has nothing to do with that card, though. I see disguise, suspected, cases, cloak, and they all seem very complicated mechanics. Even investigate puts a lot of complexity for a single action. Were there any apprehensions about this set’s complexity?

The set, as a whole, is less complicated than you think. Disguise/cloak is probably the most complicated mechanic, but a lot of players have experience with morph, and this version is a little simpler due to the ward as there’s less spell interaction with facedown creatures.

Token Generation

New 08 Dec 2023 Asked by xenobladexfan 33 Comments

Hi Mark! Would creating a Food token ever be shortened to something like Cook, similar to Investigate creating a Clue?

We don’t want to tie generation of tokens to a word. Investigate just happened early before we figured this out.

Investigate Mechanic Query

New 13 Nov 2023 Asked by gnommunist-organizer 33 Comments

If the existence of investigate causes such a hassle when compared to other predefined tokens without keyword actions, have you considered errata-ing it away? Voldaren Bloodcaster shows that cards that care about investigating could just care about creating the Clues.

It’s less that it causes a hassle than it’s not necessary. We don’t tend to errata that kind of thing away.

Keyword Action Tokens

Can you solve the following riddle? Investigate -> Clue; Feast ->___; Hoard -> ___; Excavate -> ___; Scrounge-> ___; Pluck ->___

We don’t want keyword actions to make the various artifact tokens.

Clues Mechanic Evolution

What's more likely, clues being untethered from Investigate or a new token similar to clues like what treasure was to gold?

We’ve made cards that create Clues without investigating.

We knew we wanted to do a mechanic called investigate before we knew what it did. We tried card drawing, but it was too good in volume, so we asked ourselves, “Is there a way to draw half a card?”Happy Birthday!

Keyword Mechanic Changes

New 08 Oct 2023 Asked by je-suis-en-retard 28 Comments

Bonsoir, Mark! When new keyword mechanics are made, we sometimes see old cards with identical text errata'd to have the keyword (like Surveil, recently). Is the reverse possible? For example, could Investigate on old cards be replaced with "Create a Clue token" if the designers felt it was the best approach?

I think we’re going to continue with investigate for creating Clue tokens.
